December 8, 2008 - ABC is moving forward with a pilot for a potential ongoing TV series called Fables, an adaptation of the acclaimed DC/Vertigo comic book series of the same name.

The Hollywood Reporter says Stu Zicherman and Raven Metzner (Six Degrees) are writing the script for the pilot, which will be directed by David Semel (whose many credits include directing the pilot to Heroes) .

The comic book Fables, created by Bill Willingham, is about a hidden society living in modern-day New York, made up of the real incarnations of fairy tale characters, such as Pinocchio and Cinderella. Zicherman and Metzner wouldn't get specific on which characters would appear in the series, beyond Snow White, the Big Bad Wolf and Prince Charming, all of whom have played central roles in the comic.

There have been previous attempt to adapt Fables before, including two years ago at NBC. The project, not surprisingly, will be produced by DC's corporate sibling Warner Bros. Warner Bros. recently scrapped an in-development pilot at The CW, The Graysons, based on DC Comics' Dick Grayson (AKA Robin), but Fables new status at ABC proves they are clearly looking at other properties that can be adapted from the DC/Vertigo stable, beyond the main DC superheroes.

Interest totally piqued. Willingham should be brought on as a consultant. Hope the pilot turns out right.
