SUPERMAN ( 2000)
Director : Tim Burton
Producer : Jon Peters
Screenplay : Andrew Kevin Walker
Music : Danny Elfman
Project History
With the constant delays and false starts of Superman Lives, Nicholas Cage eventually walks away from the troubled project .
While Burton interest also begins to fade, Burton is still intrigued by the idea of putting his own spin on The Man Of Steel.
However, he becomes increasingly tired of The Death Of Superman story as a foundation , and instead, wants to tell the story of an outsider alienated from society , a theme much more up Burton's ally than adapting a recent comicbook storyline.
Thus , Burton wants to shift to more of an origin story, instead of a story of an established Superman.
Producer Jon Peters, though taken by The Death Of Superman approach, is willing to shift course and give the project a face lift .
The change of direction brings new life into the project , and motivates the filmmaker to see his new vision through .
The new film would simply be titled Superman and would begin filming in Pittsburgh in 1999 for a Summer 2000 release date.
Story
While the film has shifted to being an origin story, Burton doesn't want to redo what Donner did 20 years earlier.
Instead , the film would be much more akin to the first Batman film, with a fully formed Man Of Steel, operating for several months in Metropolis.
He'd be a man of mystery saving people, though ultimately, a solitary figure hiding in the shadows, and feeling out of step with humanity.
The Kents would already be gone at the start of the film , and Kent would largely be alone, with K , The Fortresses AI system, serving as his mentor, tutor, and friend.
However, The K system would turn out to be Brainiac , a program with it's roots in Krypton's destruction
The system would ultimately turn on Kal , and reveal it's true motives for using The Man Of Steel .
Lois Lane would be a jaded genXer , working ,at the Daily Planet , who connects with strange visitor from another planet .
Clark , on the other hand, she dismisses as a straight laced , empty suit.
As she pulls Superman from the shadows, the two become attached to each other , especially as many humans consider him a freak.
A CEO version of Lex Luthor , would represent Humanity which treats the Man Of Steel as an outsider .
This would be a very different version of the villain than the Gene Hackman version of the Donner films.
His Ally would be General Sam Lane, whom Lois has an estranged relationship with , and who wants Superman for experimental purposes.
Characters such as Perry White and Jimmy Olsen would return in the reboot , as well as comic book staples such as Cat Grant.
Unlike his Batman Films, Burton wanted to keep the more modern aesthetic that would have been in place for Superman Lives.
With this being The 90s take on the character, Burton didn't want the world of the film looking like the timeless , art deco world of Batman and Batman Returns.
Casting
SUPERMAN/ CLARK KENT
With Nicholas Cage off the project, Warner Brothers still wants a big name in the lead role .
Hot off the unexpected success of The Matrix, Keanu Reeves 's name goes to the top of the list .
While Burton feels the actor may be too conventional a choice for his liking , Jon Peters is already sold on the actor , and convinces Burton to at least approach Reeves.
Reeves , on the other hand, seems much more interested in playing the next Batman.
Once Peters and Burton convince the actor that his version of Superman would be much more a complex and alienated figure , Reeves decides to take the role ,
though he wants to do it on a film by film basis , as opposed to signing onto 3 films at once.
The casting sends shockwaves among fandom , with many adamantly against the idea of the former Speed, and Bill and Ted, actor as Superman.
This is no surprise to Burton ,whose familiar with casting controversy .
Peters and WB , however , know Reeves is a big name , and will get the GA into the theater.
LOIS LANE
For The role of Lois Lane , names like Sandra Bullock and Courtney Cox are tossed around , with even Neve Campbell expressing interest in the part .
However, in another outside the box choice, Burton goes to cast his past lead Winona Ryder , as Lois Lane , particularly after her riveting performance in Girl , Interrupted.
The casting is once again met with skepticism by online Fandom, with many feeling she is too young and green for the part .
But once again, to WB, she's a proven property and had worked with Reeves on the ill fated Bram Stoker's : Dracula.
BRAINIAC
Though names like Kevin Spacy and Christopher Walken are associated with the role during the Superman Lives era of the project , Burton once again decides to go in a radically different direction with the character .
Instead , Burton casts a woman in the role of Brainiac , bringing a whole new dynamic to the Kal El and Brainiac relationship, presenting a lead female villain, a first in the Superman films.
While many speculate that a big name actress will snag the part , Burton casts Cate Blanchett , hot off of accolades for a variety of performances .
She brings an intellegence and eeriness to a version of Brainiac who appears almost as a nurturing
,mentor figure, only to turn on the Man Of Steel, revealing her truly demented plans.
The casting , as with Clark and Lois, causes controversy in fandom, in addition to the characterization of the classic villain as female.
LEX LUTHOR
For the role of Lex Luthor , Burton casts John Malcovich , an actor who fans initially thought would be playing Brainiac .
His casting however, is meant with much more of a consensus and praise in fandom than the rest of the main cast .
SUPPORTING CAST
The rest of the supporting cast is made up of respected character actors including Michael Gambon as Jor El, Albert Finney as Perry White , and Ed Harris as Sam Lane., while Ethan Embry is cast as Jimmy Olsen .
Christine Baranski would later be cast as the chatter box , office vixen , Cat Grant.
