SUPERMAN ( 2000)
Director : Tim Burton
Producer : Jon Peters
Screenplay : Andrew Kevin Walker
Music : Danny Elfman
1727388709417.png

Project History
With the constant delays and false starts of Superman Lives, Nicholas Cage eventually walks away from the troubled project .
While Burton interest also begins to fade, Burton is still intrigued by the idea of putting his own spin on The Man Of Steel.
However, he becomes increasingly tired of The Death Of Superman story as a foundation , and instead, wants to tell the story of an outsider alienated from society , a theme much more up Burton's ally than adapting a recent comicbook storyline.

Thus , Burton wants to shift to more of an origin story, instead of a story of an established Superman.
Producer Jon Peters, though taken by The Death Of Superman approach, is willing to shift course and give the project a face lift .

The change of direction brings new life into the project , and motivates the filmmaker to see his new vision through .
The new film would simply be titled Superman and would begin filming in Pittsburgh in 1999 for a Summer 2000 release date.

Story
While the film has shifted to being an origin story, Burton doesn't want to redo what Donner did 20 years earlier.
Instead , the film would be much more akin to the first Batman film, with a fully formed Man Of Steel, operating for several months in Metropolis.
He'd be a man of mystery saving people, though ultimately, a solitary figure hiding in the shadows, and feeling out of step with humanity.

The Kents would already be gone at the start of the film , and Kent would largely be alone, with K , The Fortresses AI system, serving as his mentor, tutor, and friend.
However, The K system would turn out to be Brainiac , a program with it's roots in Krypton's destruction

The system would ultimately turn on Kal , and reveal it's true motives for using The Man Of Steel .

Lois Lane would be a jaded genXer , working ,at the Daily Planet , who connects with strange visitor from another planet .
Clark , on the other hand, she dismisses as a straight laced , empty suit.
As she pulls Superman from the shadows, the two become attached to each other , especially as many humans consider him a freak.

A CEO version of Lex Luthor , would represent Humanity which treats the Man Of Steel as an outsider .
This would be a very different version of the villain than the Gene Hackman version of the Donner films.

His Ally would be General Sam Lane, whom Lois has an estranged relationship with , and who wants Superman for experimental purposes.

Characters such as Perry White and Jimmy Olsen would return in the reboot , as well as comic book staples such as Cat Grant.

Unlike his Batman Films, Burton wanted to keep the more modern aesthetic that would have been in place for Superman Lives.
With this being The 90s take on the character, Burton didn't want the world of the film looking like the timeless , art deco world of Batman and Batman Returns.

Casting

SUPERMAN/ CLARK KENT

With Nicholas Cage off the project, Warner Brothers still wants a big name in the lead role .
Hot off the unexpected success of The Matrix, Keanu Reeves 's name goes to the top of the list .
While Burton feels the actor may be too conventional a choice for his liking , Jon Peters is already sold on the actor , and convinces Burton to at least approach Reeves.

Reeves , on the other hand, seems much more interested in playing the next Batman.
Once Peters and Burton convince the actor that his version of Superman would be much more a complex and alienated figure , Reeves decides to take the role ,
though he wants to do it on a film by film basis , as opposed to signing onto 3 films at once.

The casting sends shockwaves among fandom , with many adamantly against the idea of the former Speed, and Bill and Ted, actor as Superman.
This is no surprise to Burton ,whose familiar with casting controversy .
Peters and WB , however , know Reeves is a big name , and will get the GA into the theater.

LOIS LANE
For The role of Lois Lane , names like Sandra Bullock and Courtney Cox are tossed around , with even Neve Campbell expressing interest in the part .
However, in another outside the box choice, Burton goes to cast his past lead Winona Ryder , as Lois Lane , particularly after her riveting performance in Girl , Interrupted.

The casting is once again met with skepticism by online Fandom, with many feeling she is too young and green for the part .
But once again, to WB, she's a proven property and had worked with Reeves on the ill fated Bram Stoker's : Dracula.

BRAINIAC
Though names like Kevin Spacy and Christopher Walken are associated with the role during the Superman Lives era of the project , Burton once again decides to go in a radically different direction with the character .
Instead , Burton casts a woman in the role of Brainiac , bringing a whole new dynamic to the Kal El and Brainiac relationship, presenting a lead female villain, a first in the Superman films.

While many speculate that a big name actress will snag the part , Burton casts Cate Blanchett , hot off of accolades for a variety of performances .
She brings an intellegence and eeriness to a version of Brainiac who appears almost as a nurturing
,mentor figure, only to turn on the Man Of Steel, revealing her truly demented plans.

The casting , as with Clark and Lois, causes controversy in fandom, in addition to the characterization of the classic villain as female.

LEX LUTHOR
For the role of Lex Luthor , Burton casts John Malcovich , an actor who fans initially thought would be playing Brainiac .
His casting however, is meant with much more of a consensus and praise in fandom than the rest of the main cast .

SUPPORTING CAST
The rest of the supporting cast is made up of respected character actors including Michael Gambon as Jor El, Albert Finney as Perry White , and Ed Harris as Sam Lane., while Ethan Embry is cast as Jimmy Olsen .
Christine Baranski would later be cast as the chatter box , office vixen , Cat Grant.

MAN OF TOMORROW ( 2004)
Director : Tim Burton
Producer : Jon Peters
Screenplay : Andrew Kevin Walker
1727412095212.png1727414816580.png

Project History
While many fans were critical of Burton's interpretation of The Superman mythology, The First films turns into a surprise hit , Earning more than 200 Million dollars at the box office in the Summer of 2000.
A sequel is greenlit , though Reeves and Burton are both busy working on other projects , so the sequel is aimed for a 2003 or 2004 release date .

With the first film rejuvenating the Superman franchise, Burton is given even more freedom to continue his Superman story and Keanu Reeves is also made an executive Producer on the sequel.
With Ryder and the rest of the supporting cast expected to return , Warner Brothers is excited for the future of a Superman franchise.

In the era of The X Men and Spiderman films, Burton Superman films would now stand apart as a uniquely personal vision of the filmmaker .

Story
As with Batman Returns, Burton wants to tell an entirely new story set in the same world as the original .
While the first film dealt with Clark's feelings of alienation , Burton wanted to make a misunderstood monster film , akin to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein or King Kong.

Burton wants to go the opposite route of a sociopathic AI such as Brainiac, and instead ,wants a sympathetic antagonist , whom Superman must protect from the true villains.
Returning Screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker finds his misunderstood monster Bizarro, who in this version, is the clone creation of Lex Luthor .

While Luthor's intention is for Bizarro to kill Superman , the creature is ultimately kind , with a child like temperament and of low intelligence .
Like Superman , the creature falls in love with Lois Lane , and wants nothing more than to be near her.

Though the creature first resembles Superman, it begins to deteriorate as his skin turns white, and his features grown more grotesque.
Like Frankenstein, the creature would eventually escape his creator, and wreck havoc on Metropolis , with only the Man Of Steel able to stop him.

After a fierce fight with the aimless creature, Superman and Lois are able to tame and calm the beast.
Eventually the two would begin to form a bond with Bizarro .

Superman becomes protective of the creature, shielding him at the Fortress of Solitude , and seeing him as the brother he never had.

The Military , in the form of Sam Lane strongly objects, and demands the Man Of Steel hand the creature over.
Superman , of course, refuses , remembering Lane's own intentions of experimenting on him.

The secondary villain of the film is John Corbin , whose tasked by Sam Lane to stop the Superman clone , and the man of steel if needed.
Corbin volunteers for a secret program designed to keep Superman in line by creating the ultimate cybernetic /human solider, armed with Kryptonite, as the ultimate equalizer.

Bizarro and The Man Of Steel would ultimately find themselves at odds with Metallo and Lex Luthor .

In the end , Bizarro would ultimately die heroically saving Lois , though not before taking Metallo with him .

A subplot of the film would be Clark's struggle over telling Lois Lane the truth about who he really is .

Superman and Lois having formed a bond in the first film, it becomes clear the two are more than just friends , though Superman fears her father would reject and prevent a romance between his daugther and the man of steel and an alien.

At the same time, Lex's character would also come more to the forefront , exposing his true mania and godlike complex .
While Brainiac was the puppet master in the first film, in the sequel Lex is truly pulling all the strings.

The film would be titled Man Of Tomorrow.

Burton , reluctant to call the film Superman 2, prefers the title of Man Of Tomorrow, feeling that audiences will already know it's a sequel to Superman and feeling that the characters name with a roman numeral, is unnecessary.

The title also further emphasizes that the film is less a sequel and more a new adventure for Superman.

Casting

BIZARRO
For the role of the classic Superman villain, anti hero , Burton wants an actor who can convey a child like innonce in one moment , then a physical menance in the next.
Burton doesn't want a wrestler, turned actor . He wants an actor who is physically imposing , but can command the screen.
Burton has only one actor in mind, the talented and imposing Vincent D'ONofrio , who previously worked with Burton on Ed Wood a decade earlier.
D' ONofrio is instructed to watch James Whale's Frankenstein for inspiration.

METALLO
For the role of Metallo , Burton casts his Planet Of The Apes heavy Tim Roth feeling immense talent in addiction to his shorter stature present an interesting contrast to Reeves and D'ONofrio.
Though he is physically smaller than Superman and Bizarro, he's one of the few men on Earth who can destroy them , given his kryptonite chest.

BATMAN : YEAR ONE ( 2001)
Director : Joel Schumacher
Screenplay : Andrew Kevin Walker and Mark Protovich
1727457926243.png

Project History
In the aftermath of Batman And Robin, Batman Unchained is quietly shelved , and Joel Schumacher's future as helmer of the franchise remains in question.
As the 90s begins to come to a close, Schumacher wants to make up for the embarrassing response to the last film .
He vows to give the Batman fans a Batman film they can be proud of .
Schumacer, feeling the previous 4 films had run their course, proposes a radical new direction and a reboot of the entire series.

The director now feels the best course of action is focusing on the origins of a much younger Batman , and adapting the Frank Miller Year One story arch.
While he proposes this approach to WB , allowing Schumacher to be the helm is a much tougher sale.
Despite making the campy toyetiec Batman film the studio wanted, they now question whether Schumacher is the right fit for a darker , somber, Batman film.
Schumacer pleads his case pointing to his films like Flatliners, Falling down, and his recent 8MM, as proof that he can abandon the neon and go noir instead.

Ultimately, in a controversial and surprise move, The Studio agrees to give Schumacher another chance despite Batman and Robin's reception.
The studio also takes another leap of faith in restarting the series from scratch , which doesn't sit well with all the execs at WB.

The announcement of the new direction and the return of Schumacher is met largely with a fan backlash and fan polarization.
While many fans agree that Schumacher shouldn't return , they are more evenly divided about rebooting the series .

Many fans want the series to continue but with a new director and a new Batman .
Many other fans want Keaton and Burton to return and feel it's far too soon to reboot the series .
And yet , another faction of fans feel that Batman Year One is the best direction , and that a new continuity opens new opportunities .

The Pressure is on Schumacher to prove not only the fans, but the studio, and the media , that he can deliever a gritty, indie Batman flick, that will please all audiences.
With a much lower Budget this time around, Schumacher has little room for error.

Story
The Script by Andrew Kevin Walker and Mark Protovich , sticks fairly close to the Year One Story , with its origin of Batman's first year taking on the mob, the corrupt GCPD, and learning through trial and error how to be a hero.
In the film, the character would be portrayed as a head strong yet damaged , blunt instrument . Meanwhile, as Bruce Wayne , he would learn to enherit the Wayne Family mantle .
As in the comics, the film would also feature the his partnership with Chicago cop James Gordon and his parrellel journey into becoming Captain Gordon .

As in the comics, Selina Kyle aka Catwoman would be introduced , though she would be much more of a love interest than in the original storyline.
The major new addition to the Year One story would be Leslie Thompkins, who would serve as a counter balance to Alfred, and would be a stern Mother figure to The Young Bruce Wayne.

Casting
In casting the film , Schumacher wants to approach low profile yet well respected actors in the lead roles .
Unlike the previous film , casting the biggest names or flavor of the month is not an option .
With the much lower budget , Schumacher does not have the free hand to cast actors as expensive as Jack Nicholson or Arnold Scwartzenengger .
This time, he sets out to make an indie film which happens to feature Batman , and he wants his cast of actors to reflect the new sensibility.

BATMAN / BRUCE WAYNE
While Several young actors from Ben Affleck, To Matt Damon, and Jude Law are all considered , Schumacher decides to cast the largely unknown yet talented Irish actor Colin Farrell, as The new Batman .
The 25 year old actor is quite young in contrast to the previous actors who'd donned the cape and cowl , but his lack of noterity made him the perfect candidate for audeinces to except as Batman.

CATWOMAN/ SELINA KYLE
While Halle Berry seems to be a shoe in for the role of the new Catwoman, Schumacher once again goes with a lesser known and younger actor in the form of British actress Naomie Harris.
She's chosen after an electric screentest with Farrell .
Finding that their chemistry was off the charts and liking her approach to the role, Schumacher casts her in the part.

JAMES GORDON
Several actors , including Russell Crowe, Chris Cooper, and Kurt Russell are all bandied about to take on the role of Gotham's top Cop .
Ultimately, it's acclaimed character actor William H. Macy who snags the part .
Schumacher feels that his midwest , all American attitude , makes for an interesting contrast to the darker more driven Farrell.

ALFRED PENNYWORTH
For the role of Bruce's surrogate Father and Loyal Butler , Schumacher wants British Thespian, Ian McKellen, feeling he has the right blend of Wisdom , with a hint of impishness.
The actor however , is in high demand between The X Men films , and constant reshoots for New Line's Lord Of The Rings Trilogy.
However, the actor is able to make time through his busy schedule to play the part

LESLIE THOMPKINS
For the role of Leslie Thompkins , Helen Mirren is at the top of Schumacher's list with Emma Thompson as a potential second option.
The actress agrees to take on the role, which is substantial , in the film.

CARMINE FALCONE
When Robert Deniro turns down the role , Schumacher approaches Harvey Kietel who agrees to sign onto the part .
Ironically, Kietel turns out to be the better choice and makes a much more interesting contrast due to his physical similarities to Colin Farrell.
The two men are now mirror images of each other , with Farrell's Batman being the young and hungry avenger and Kietel's Falcone being the older corrupt mirror image of who Bruce could turn into .

SARAH ESSEN
For the role of Gordon's ally and lover , Schumacher considers Robin Wright , but ultimately goes with Toni Collette .

SUPPORTING CAST
The rest of the cast is made up of lesser known, yet strong supporting actors such as Justin Theroux as the ambitious Harvey Dent , and Chance Kelly as Gordon's corrupt partner Flass.

I haven't really liked the idea of Lois Lane's father being a military general, let alone a significant opponent or thorn to Superman, generally but Ryder and Harris could do really well in the roles and also have interesting relationship with each other, feel very different and yet also connected, estranged but overall respectful and with some affection and then growing closer again (though remaining still quite different). Reeves and Ryder would also be interesting pair and feel very modern and yet at least also related enough to previous classic versions. Kind of wish Finney and Gambon had more roles.

Kind of prefer that Brainiac is either not Kryptonian or if is Kryptonian was not villainous then, was not related to Krypton's destruction, only becomes opponent.

BATMAN : YEAR ONE ( 2001)
Director : Joel Schumacher

Really agree on Schumacher choosing Farrell and he could have been really good, I think he would probably go with Jessica Biel as Selina, either Kurt Russell or William H. Macy as Gordon (and Macy is so good I kind of want him to play both good guy and bad guy lol). I think Schumacher then would have also wanted and gotten Michael Caine as Alfred, would have really liked his range from The Cider House Rules and/to Quills and the warmth and confidence/strength he could bring, and he probably particularly looks, even kind of comes off (and can more) as slightly younger version of Gough portrayal. Harvey Keitel would be interesting as really younger Alfred, also real good as Falcone, appropriate level of stardom/prominent established supporting actor for that size of role and kind of villain compared to the previous ones.

SUPERMAN LIVES ( 2007)
Director : Tim Burton
1727538731406.png

Project History
Following the global success of Man Of Tomorrow, Warner Brothers wants to move full steam ahead with a third Burton Superman film.
Burton and Reeves however both agree that if there's going to be another film, it should be their last.
Burton sees the film as the shocking conclusion to Clark's story comparing the developing film to The Wrath Of Khan and The Empire Strikes Back.
Andrew Kevin Walker's screenplay is kept closely guarded, as fans debate what the film will be about and what a new liberties will be taken with the DC comics character.

Filming begins in secret in 2005 for a 2007 release date.

Story
At the heart of the third and final film is Clark's acceptance that he cannot be both Clark Kent and Superman , and in order to lead a happy life, one of his personas must go.
As Superman he can save people , but he's still an outsider , yet he has Lois .
As Clark he can lead a normal life with human connections , but unless he tells Lois the truth, he won't have her.

It's in this existential crisis, that a group of war criminals from Krypton's past, escape the nightmarish Phantom Zone, and come to Earth in search of Kal El.
However, Burton brings a radical yet controversial twist on General Zod and His partner .

His partner , as it turns out would not be Faora or Usra as in the comics, but would be none other than Kara Zor El, Superman's cousin !
In a break with her comics counter part , she would be a radical disciple who tried to over throw The Kryptonian Government .along with General Zod.

But the most controversial script decision comes in the films second act ,when General Zod reveals to Kal El , that the general himself, is the Man Of Steel's true father !
In a star wars style twist, The Man Of Steel is forced to confront secrets from the house of El , and the truth behind the end of Krypton.
However, The Man Of Steel has very little time to come to terms with his true paternity as his father Zod and his cousin Kara set about their destruction of Metropolis.
In the end , Kal feels it takes more than DNA to make a father, and regardless of the connection Zod and he may share, he cannot let Zod destroy Earth.

The twist is leaked online , setting off a firestorm from fandom , with many demanding the filmmaker change the script.
Still , Burton holds firm with the twist in straying from the comics .
Lex and Sam Lane both appear in the film in albeit smaller roles.

Sam sends in the military to battle Zod and the Kryptonians, While Lex forms an uneasy alliance with Superman in order to stop Zod

After a few Battles throughout the film , Superman knows he may be outmatched this time , and that in order to destroy Zod and the Phantom Zone criminals,
He must sacrifice himself .

Before he battles Zod for the last time , he tells Lois the truth, and tells her that he loves her .
While Superman is ultimately able to convince his cousin that Earth is worth saving , Zod is unmoved , and Battles his son for Earth's future.

Superman engages in a fierce battle encompassing all of Metropolis , which ultimately results in the death of General Zod and The Man Of Steel.
Lois Lane, Kara, and the rest of the world mourn the death of the Man Of Steel .

A year later , Lois Lane goes to Superman's tomb , only to find his crypt and coffin open and empty.
As Lois Lane returns to her apartment she finds Superman and Supergirl hovering outside her balcony.

Superman lives , thanks to Jor El and Lara's final act of love, giving the Man Of Steel their remaining lifeforce through the Fortress of Solitude .

Ultimately , Clark finally makes his choice .
He's not Superman and he's not Clark, he's Kal, the man who loves Lois Lane, and wants to live happily ever after.

Kara agrees to carry the mantle of Supergirl , and watch over as Earth as it's protector.
And in the end the couple leaves Metropolis , and Burton's Superman story ends.

Casting

GENERAL ZOD
For the controversial role of Kal El's true father , Burton casts his longtime collaborator Johnny Depp in a rare villainous turn.
Depp jumps at the chance at playing a truly sinister character after playing Jack Sparrow in Pirates Of The Caribbean, and Burton like's the contrast
Between Reeves and Depp , both actors who also had long personal histories with Ryder .

SUPERGIRL/ ZARA ZOR EL
For Kara Burton has only one choice, his other Sleepy Hollow lead Christina Ricci .
While Natalie Portman is a potential back up , it's Ricci's ability to play ambiguous, and other worldly characters ,
Which adds a unique creepiness and menence to her portrayal of Supergirl

NON
For the Role Of Non, Burton casts his Planet Of The Apes actor Michael Clake Duncan , in a role mirroring that character .
Non in this version is an intellegent tactiction who is also Brutal on the Battlefield .
Burton feels Duncan with his imposing figure and booming voice is a perfect fit for part.

LARA
Helena Bonham Carter, who was previous considered for Brainiac several years earlier is cast in a cameo role as Superman's mother
and appears as a hologram, along with Jor El , explaining Kal El's true paternity to him.

WONDER WOMAN (2005)
Director : McG
Producer : Jon Peters
Screenplay : Joss Whedon and McG
1727548405505.png

Project History
With Superman and Batman films in various stages of development , WB is keen on making the first major motion picture based on the iconic DC character Wonder Woman.
Though Buffy scribe Joss Whedon has worked on a script , The WB brass aren't entirely satisfied with the project.
At the same time , the studio has yet to nail down a director , though they've courted Michael Bay to helm the project.
McG, director of The Charlie's Angels films , expresses interest in making an action packed Wonder Woman film .

Having brought the iconic Charlie's Angels series to the big screen , McG, who had been previously attached to direct Superman : Flyby , seems like a natural fit for WB.
Having dealt with strong , powerful, and charismatic female characters in the Angels franchise, McG is excited about bringing another Iconic female character to the big screen.

Whedon and McG work closely together to craft a screenplay that would serve as the foundation for a franchise.
Filming for Wonder Woman begins in 2004 for a Fall 2005 release date.

Story
McG and Whedon start from scratch with an entirely new story that would be a mixture of Diana's comics origin, with an Indiana Jones style search for an ancient artifact,
once belonging to the Amazon's and now somewhere in the Jungles of a fictional South American country.

The film would be set in the 1940s and would feel very much like the current Mummy films and The Rocketeer .
In contrast to the 1940s aesthetic , the film would feature the same over the top action and editing of the Charlies Angels films.

The films villains would be Nazi spy, industrialist ,Maxwell Lord, and his treasure hunter assistant Barbara Minerva , who seek out the ancient artifact, which eventually transforms Minerva into the Cheetah.
Their minion would be another Wonder Woman villain , the bond like hench villian , Dr. Psycho .

The film would , of course , feature the Dashing Steve Trevor , played very much as a mixture of Errol Flynn and Clark Gable , while they would be joined by the sweet , yet quirky Etta Candy.

In the end , Diana would defeat Lord and Cheetah and turn them over to the US government .
In a twist , it would turn out the two were working for the mysterious Baroness Von Gunther , who would be a Blofeld like mastermind, and a continually adversary for future sequels.

Diana would return the artifact to Paradise Island before returning to Man's World to stay , as long as she's needed and to be a champion of peace and justice as Wonder Woman.

Casting

WONDER WOMAN / DIANA PRINCE
For the role of Wonder Woman , several actresses from Hollywood including Jessica Biel , Cameron Diaz , Keira Knightly, and Catherine Zeta Jones, all express interest in playing the iconic role.
In the end , the two finalists are Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel , with Beckinsale edging out Biel for the part.
Ultimately, Beckinsale is the full package in her ability to convey strength, wisdom, class, and humor .

STEVE TREVOR
For the role of Steve Trevor , McG wants Jude Law , having been impressed by his auditions for Superman .
McG feels law is very much in the mold of an old Hollywood movie star , in addition to having a roguish charm for a role that could easily become cookie cutter.

MAXWELL LORD
While Matt Damon is considered for the role of Lord, it's Bond actor Toby Stephens who ultimately wins the role .
Having excelled at playing a smarmey and calculating baddie in Die Another Day , Maxwell Lord seems like the next logical step .

CHEETAH / BARBARA MINERVA
For the role of Cheetah , Mila Jovovich is strongly rumored to be in consideration , but it's the lesser known Eva Green, who ultimately is cast.
While not known for action, McG is facsinated by her eyes and her striking looks in combination with a voice which exudes wisdom .
He feels she makes the perfect foe to Beckinsale's Wonder Woman .

THE BARONESS
Though a brief role in the film , McG knows he's casting his Professor Moriarity , and thus , needs an actress with a command and presence that can sustain itself over several films.
He's ultimately able to snag Academy Award winning actress Charlize Theron for the part.
Looking like an Amazon herself, Theron is able to project an icy determination with a hint of sadism , making her a believable foe who could go toe to toe with the Amazon.

SUPPORTING CAST
The legendary Sigourney Weaver is cast as Hippolyta , while Emily Watson plays the comical Etta Candy, and actor Peter Dinklage plays the woman hating, Dr. Psycho.

BATMAN : YEAR ONE ( 2001)
Director : Joel Schumacher
Screenplay : Andrew Kevin Walker and Mark Protovich
View attachment 105385

BATMAN : THE LONG HALLOWEEN ( 2004)
Director : Joel Schumacher
Screenplay : Andrew Kevin Walker and James Vanderbilt
1727558405569.png

Project History
Against all odds , Schumacher's Year One film receives critical praise ,with even some skeptical voices in fandom, admitting the film is a vast improvement from the director.
Year One is also able to turn a healthy profit at the box office, and in DVD and VHS sales .

A sequel to Batman : Year One is quickly greenlit , but instead of adapting the much maligned Batman : Year Two,
Schumacher instead goes to another acclaimed comics arch.

Schumacher vows to tackle Batman : The Long Halloween as his next Batman project .

The announcement is met by near universal praise in fandom , and speculation abounds about who will fill the roles of Batman's rogues gallery.

The film promises to be an epic noir, thriller , and a game of whodunnit , an element which has been absent from the previous films.

Like an Agatha Christie Adaptation , Schumacher plans to cast a variety of well respected and well known actors in the roles of the various characters.

The sprawling film begins shooting in 2003 for a Halloween 2004 release date.

Story
The story follows the adaptation of the Loeb and Sale comics fairly closely, with a notable change.

The Calendar Man plays a much larger role in the film, and is very much a Hannibal Lecter style figure , working with The Batman to piece the clues together ,
While his own motives and role in the mystery come to question.

Villains such as The Joker and The Riddler , representing the rise of Freaks also appear , though they have much smaller roles as suspects as opposed to lead antagonists
as in the earlier Batman films.

As in the comics Sophia and Alberto Falcone take center stage as antagonists , with Harvey Dent's fall from grace also being a major plot of the film.

The story also deals with the Wayne Families long ties with the Falcone Family , an aspect which is hinted at in Schumacher's Year One.

Selina Kyle's paternity also plays a major role in the film as in the original comics arc .

Ultimately, Alberto Falcone is revealed to be the Holiday Killer , Selina is revealed to be Falcone's daughter and thus heir to his criminal empire, and Harvey Dent is transformed into Two Face by Falcone as opposed to Maroni, who is absent in this adaptation.

Casting

SOPHIA FALCONE
Schumacher , as so often in his casting , has only one actress in mind for the role of the mob princess, and that is superstar Angelina Jolie .
He courts and pursues her feeling she is the perfect, Barbara Stanwick- like femme fatale for this noir mystery.
Surprisingly, the actress agrees to the role .

ALBERTO FALCONE
For the role of the Calendar Killer , Schumacher wants The Pianist actor Adrian Brody , though Jeremy Davies waits in the wings as a potential back up choice.
Brody reminds Schumacher very much of a mixture between a young Deniro and Pacino , giving Schumacher and the production Godfather vibes.

CALENDER MAN
Instead of looking to an older actor , Schumacher chooses acclaimed actor Philip Seymour Hoffman for to play the role of Batman's informal partner on the Holiday Killings.
Hoffman's ability to be both chilling, intelligent, charming, and creepy make him an interesting counterpoint to the intense and driven Farrell.

GILDA DENT
For the role of Harvey's ill fated wife , several actresses are considered , but it's Gretchen Mol who Schumacher wants.
Her purity and innocence in previous roles make her the perfect partner to an ambitious D.A. who falls from grace.

JOKER
For the role of Joker, Schumacher picks Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro after he gives a chilling and understated audition .
Unlike Romero and Nicholson's over the top portrayals, Del Toro delivers a more measured and unsettling performance, with his intense instability, just under the surface.

RIDDLER
Edward Norton jumps at the chance to play a much more intellectual version of the character as opposed to Carrey's manic and over the top portrayal of the classic Batman villain.

BATMAN : HUSH ( 2007)
Director : Joel Schumacher

1727563475523.png

Project History
Following the even bigger success of The Long Halloween , Schumacher has come a long way in redeeming his reputation from the 90s era Batman films.
With another Batman film a forgone conclusion, Schumacher decides he has one more film left in him , and that he truly wants to go out with bang.

While Dark Victory seems the most natural follow up to Long Halloween, Schumacher wants to make a Batman film about love and loss.
He wants to tell the final piece of this Batman's origin into the Caped Crusader , thus leaving the franchise open to a future filmmaker to take it in any direction.

Ultimately , Schumacher chooses the recent Hush storyline for his final film , though drastic changes will have to be made to the story to fit into Batman's early years.
The studio likes the idea and sees the film as a true set up for a " status quo " Batman, his rogues gallery in check , and on the path to becoming the Batman we all know.

The film begins filming in 2006 , for a summer 2007 release date.

Story
Ultimately turning a direct adaptation of Hush isn't possible given the comics continuity and the inclusion of characters like Superman, who , in this universe, doesn't exist unlike in Schumacher's 90s films.
Instead , Walker and Vanderbilt make the film a fusion of Hush and Dark Victory , minus Robin, who Schumacher is wary of introducing after Batman And Robin.

Janice Porter is featured as The New DA in a nod to Dark Victory and Two Face makes a return .
In this version, she's the girlfriend of Bruce's Childhood friend Tommy Elliot , who acts as a fellow party animal with their mutual socialite acquittances.

The story takes place two years after The Long Halloween , As a young and hungry Dark Knight doubts he's truly making a difference.

With Harvey behind Bars having transformed into Two Face , and the rise of the Freaks over The Mob, the city is in chaos , and Batman doubts his usefulness.

It's in this context, The Batman is the target of , and bedeviled by a mysterious figure known as Hush who seemingly , knows Bruce Wayne is Batman.
Batman finds himself in a game of Cat And Mouse with the bandaged killer.

On top of Hush's target list is The Catwoman, aka, Selina Kyle .
Batman takes it upon himself to be her protector , not wanting to lose her .

Having already figured out his true identity in The Long Halloween, she is one of the few people who knows who he is ,
and willingly moves into Wayne Manor for protection.

As the months roll , Bruce and Selina fall in love , in the midst of Hush's pressure campaign.

Eventually Bruce vows, that after he captures Hush, he will marry Selina , and put the Batman away for good, and have a normal life .

Eventually , Hush's identity is revealed to be Bruce's friend Tommy Elliot who dies in combat with the Batman.
Feeling that the threat is now Gone , Bruce and Selina prepare for their wedding and their happy ending.
However, there's still another shoe to drop .

As Bruce and Selina say " I Do" The Joker crashes their wedding and shots Selina.
The act stuns Bruce , as it's clear That Dent , knows he's Batman .

Selina dies , sending Bruce into a rage , and back into the Batcave to seek revenge.
It's clear Hush's reign hasn't ended , and Batman's identity is blown .

It's only then Bruce begins to think clearly, and he realizes that Hush did not work alone, and that The Bat is a target of a conspiracy.

Bruce would ultimately discover that Janice Porter was in on the Hush campaign, as revenge against Batman for turning in Harvey.
Riddler , the other conspirator, was the one who figured out Bruce's identity, and ultimately tipped off Joker.

In the end Janice dies trying to kill Batman , Riddler is subdued , and Batman pummels Two Face within an inch of his life .
As he's about to kill the Clown Prince of Crime , he stops himself , feeling death is too easy for the Joker , and instead ,turns him over to the police.

Bruce doesn't care if the truth comes out now , given all he's lost.
Joker , locked away in Arkham admits to The Bat that he'll never reveal Batman's secret , because, " it would end all of the fun the two of us have" .

Ultimately, Bruce realizes that he can't end his war on crime, and Selina's murder is an example of why there is no end to the Batman.
Bruce vows to continue his crusade against crime as Gotham's protector and he will not rest until peace is restored in Gotham.

He sure has played well some jerks but I agree he could also do well as nobly charismatic as well as somber and, maybe especially strongly, internally-conflicted.

Jolie might want to play, even insist for Catwoman but I can see her also accepting Sophia and making the role strong, Adrien Brody really good as new possible/probable main villain increasingly focused on and ultimately revealed to indeed be that, both working as related to and succeeding Keitel Falcone.

Fans sure would be stunned but amazed and real grateful if Schumacher had gone from style of Carrey and Jones to Theroux, Brody, Hoffman Calendar Man, Norton Riddler.

JUSTICE LEAGUE ( 2007)
Director : Christopher Nolan
Producers : Charles Roven and Emma Thomas
Screenplay : David Goyer and Jonathan Nolan
1728249935719.png

Project History
After the success of Batman Begins, and the lukewarm reception of Superman Returns, Warner Brothers is still anxious for not only a big DC hit, but a cinematic shared universe .
WB wants to finally exploit it's library of characters, and feels that a Justice League film, would serve as a viable launching point for the characters to spin off into their own projects.

While WB briefly considers developing a continuity parallel to that of Batman Begins and Superman Returns, Charles Roven , Emma Thomas, and Chris Nolan, are approached by execs
with the proposition of developing a Justice League film which would feature Christian Bale's Batman.

While it seems highly unlike Nolan would be interested in placing his Batman in a universe with superpowered individuals , surprising, Nolan shows interest .
However, Nolan wants full creative control from directing , to writing , to casting the project .

Nolan wants the characters to be extensions of the world he created in Batman Begins, as opposed to shoehorning his Batman , into a world that's custom made for other characters.
Consequently, with Nolan and Co on board , the JLA Mortal script being developed is canned , and at the same time , Superman Returns would not be apart of the Nolan Justice League continuity.

This would truly be a Justice League film from the mind and vision of Christopher Nolan .
David Goyer would return to screenwriting duties , the the project would have a quicker turn around than usual in order to develop Nolan's follow up to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight.

Screenplay
The story would focus on the threat on nuclear annihilation, by the international criminal organization known as Intergang , which is being lead by a Bond Like villain, Morgan Edge.
Intergang would be very much like antagonist of Bond mythology SPECTRE, an multinational criminal organization ,with eyes and ears everywhere .

Holding the world ransom , Intergang has claimed to have planted Nuclear Warheads in the cities of Gotham, Metropolis, Star City, and Central City.

As The Government struggles and scrambles to get a hold of the emerging crisis, heroes , Batman , Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, and The Flash , would ultimately team up to face the nuclear threat and to stop Intergang once and for all.

Like Bruce In Batman Begins, Superman , Flash, and Wonder Woman, would all be rookies , very early on in their careers, while Green Arrow, would be more of a veteran to the group.
The screenplay would feature characters such as Lois Lane and Lex Luthor , and other supporting characters, though the film would feature Batman and Superman as the two catalyst for the groups formation.

In the end , Morgan Edge would be defeated , though the group would remain intact as a potential threat for future sequels.
Given the ongoing threat the rookie team of heroes determine to keep in contact and form their own alliance to protect their cities from future global threats.

The screenplay would delve into the backgrounds of each of the heroes , though would stop short of showing full origin stories .
Nolan wanted to leave those to future filmmakers , who would take the torch , and tell their own stories .

Nolan also wanted to stay away from more fantastical characters like Aquaman , Green Lantern, and Martin Manhunter , limiting the most fantastical , other worldly characters to Superman and Wonder Woman.

In there place is the more grounded Green Arrow, who , in this script shares parallels to Bruce, though has a different mission statement and approach to crime fighting.

Superman is portrayed as the idealist symbol of hope , whose still wet behind the ears in terms of life experience.

Wonder Woman is portrayed as wise beyond her years and pacifist who sees war as a failure , but will fight the good fight if necessary .

The Flash is portrayed the youthful optimist , offering levity to the group and the dire circumstances they face.

Project History
As Tom Mankiewicz screenplay The Batman ,is shopped around to various studios , It crosses the path of director Steven Spielberg.
Spielberg is surprised by the more serious approach to the character as opposed to the campy tv series a generation earlier .
Spielberg becomes intrigued by the idea of making a Batman film which pays homage to the characters pulp and movie serial roots.
The film maker hot off the hit of the Indiana Jones films, sees the film as the perfect follow up which could appeal to kids as well as adults.

Spielberg envisions daring do , matched with over the top villains, while at the same time, made in the style of a 1940s action adventure.
Spielberg agrees to direct the film , and with the young filmmaker on board , Paramount Studios and Lucasfilm agree to produce and finance the project.
While the development of the project comes as a surprise to many and Hollywood and in the press , others point to the success of the Superman films
as a potential guide .

With Spielberg on board, Mankiewicz's script is tossed out , and screenwriter and director Lawrence Kasdan takes over the writing duties.
With George Lucas serving as executive Producer and Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy as Producers,
Filming begins in London in 1983 for a summer 1984 release date/

Screenplay
Batman : The Motion Picture would feature Bruce Wayne's origin briefly in the opening scenes, but would quickly shift the story to a 1940d adventure in Gotham City, which pits the Caped Crusader against The Joker , The Penguin, and The devious and ambiguous Catwoman .
Along the way The Caped Crusader would get an assist from a teen street hustler who would become Robin and would aid Batman in his Crusade to take down the super criminals.
The script , much like Indiana Jones would be filled with 1940s style dialog mixed with the typical Spielberg style humor .

Batman would be portrayed as a Phillip Marlowe style Detective, who's already an established , and feared boogy man to the underworld.
Bruce Wayne , on the other hand would be much more of his playboy persona from the comics as opposed to the upstanding humanitarian of the 60s show.
Robin , would be portrayed as the charming fasting talking and risk taking sidekick who often doesn't look before he leaps.

The Joker would be portrayed very similar to Caser Romero's portrayal of an over the top, but deadly trickster ,
While Penguin is portrayed as a cut throat criminal with class
Catwoman , on the other hand would serve as the film 1940s style femme fatale as Catwoman, and unbeknownst to The Bat, Bruce Wayne's love interest , socialite Selina Kyle.

The Script would feature Batman and Robin's supporting cast including the sardonic Butler Alfred and the dogged Police Commissioner Gordon
Making his first appearance in live action , would be District Attorney Harvey Dent , with hopes of bring in Two Face for a potential sequel .

Casting

BATMAN/ BRUCE WAYNE
For the role of The Dark Knight , several actors from Warren Beatty, Nick Nolte, Richard Gere , Michael Biehn, to Bill Murray are considered, with The director and Producers being unsure which direction to go in terms of casting.

However, Spielberg and Lucas's dream pick , is Star Wars and Indiana Jones actor, Harrison Ford , feeling he has the proven acting chops, and screen presence ,to portray the world's greatest detective.
With many big names turning down the part , and Paramount being uneasy with an unknown, Spielberg makes the offer to a skeptical Ford.

However, after much convincing that the project would be more along the lines of Indiana Jones meets The Maltese Falcon as opposed to a campy tribute to the 60s show,
The actor agrees to one picture with an optional second .

Though Ford is 41, older than than originally imagined, ultimately, Spielberg wants his Batman to have the experience and gravitas to be a mentor to an 17 year old Robin, .

JOKER
While Jack Nicholson is the first choice of the studio, the producers, and even Spielberg, The actor is uninterested in the part .
Still feeling they need a big name , Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, are also considered but turn down the part.
While John Lithgow and James Woods are the two finalists, Paramount still wants a flasher choice .
Mork and Mindy actor Robin Williams expresses immense interest in the role, though producers are skeptical he can be menacing.

However, after a screentest , everyone is on board with the idea of Williams playing a manic , hysterical, yet menacing Joker.

PENGUIN
While they aren't able to get Brando for Joker, Spielberg tries again for The Penguin, and once again, Brando passes on the part.
Still feeling that a big name actor should play the part , Dustin Hoffman is approached for the role.

Given his ability to do comedy and drama with ease in the film Tootsie , Hoffman appears as a very attractive option and a less expensive choice than Brando.
To Spielberg's surprise, Hoffman agrees to the part , and his ability to chew the scenery gives the chops to hold his own against Williams's Joker.

CATWOMAN/ SELINA KYLE
Though actresses from Meryl Streep, To Cher, To Cybill Shepherd are all considered , Kasdan suggests his Body Heat lead, Kathleen Turner,
as Batman's sultry lover and foe .
Spielberg likes her for the role more than the bigger names and after a screentest with Ford, Turner is cast as the new Catwoman.

ROBIN / DICK GRAYSON
For the role of the Boy wonder , several young Hollywood up and coming actors from Rob Lowe, C Thomas Howell, to Emilio Estevez try out for Robin.
However, Frank Marshall has his eye on Risky Business actor Tom Cruise for the role once held by Burt Ward.
Spielberg likes Cruise's boyish looks and mischievous charm , and feels he serves as a great contrast to the more cynical and grounded Ford.
His natural athleticism also makes him a good pick for The new Boy Wonder.

HARVEY DENT
For the role of Harvey Dent , actor and producer Michael Douglas agrees to reunite with his recent Romancing The Stone costar Kathleen Turner.
While he was also considered for the Joker, Douglas chooses a lesser known character of Dent with the potential of making the villain his own down the road.

ALFRED PENNYWORTH
Arthur actor John Gielgud is cast as Batman and Robin's loyal butler after Sean Connery turns down the role .

JIM GORDON
Charlton Heston is originally approached for the role but turns it down feeling the role was too small .
And while Jason Robards is considered for the part , Hal Holbrook is ultimately cast in the role of the commissioner.

BATMAN REBORN ( 1995)
Director : John McTiernan
1729053539639.png1729058514924.png

Project History
In the aftermath of Batman Returns mixed results and lower than hoped Box Office, in addition to parental backlash, Warner Brothers wants to take the new franchise in a different direction.
Though Burton expresses interest in a 3rd film , the studio passes in favor of a new director .

While several names such as Sam Raimi and Joel Schumacher are tossed around , when producer Jerry Bruckheimer boards the project, he wants a director with big action hits under their belt.
While James Cameron is courted ,he passes on it , but Die Hard and The Hunt For Red October director John McTiernan expresses interest in producing a big budget, action , extravaganza of a Batman film.

As McTiernan boards the project he and Bruckheimer express interest in doing their own take on Batman as opposed to continuing on with Burton's vision.
The idea of basically restarting the series from fresh in order to utilize characters killed in the Burton films, and to forge their own path is risky, but in the long run,
a better bet.
While WB is skittish of moving too far away from Batman 89, Keaton is already on the way out , fearful of being overshadowed by too many villains, and wary of working without Burton.

So , with Keaton gone and a whole new team with a new vision, McTiernan and Bruckheimer begin to craft new Batman film, which will hopefully spawn sequels.

While the producers knew the reboot move would be controversial , with Keaton and Burton gone, a parental dissatisfaction with Returns, Producers felt audiences would be open to
An edge of their seat Die Hard- esque Batman adventure.

McTiernan and Bruckheimer envisioned the film as an all star action , adventure, thriller along the lines of films like The Poseidon Adventure and Airport .

Production on what is being called , Batman Reborn begins in 1993 for a Summer 1995 release date, and promises to be the biggest Batman film to date.

Plot
Screen writers Jonathan Hensleigh and Michael France work on a screenplay based on the recent and controversial comics storyline Knightfall, featuring Bane as the film's central antagonist, who invades Gotham, unleashes Batman's deadliest foes and chaos resulting in the breaking of The Bat, and his journey of recovery and his defeat of Bane.

Major changes from the comics would be made of course , and characters such as Jean Paul Valley and even Robin, would be absent from the screenplay .
In their place would be Officer Renee Montoya who at first is skeptical of The Bat, but , by the end ,works with him as his partner to restoring peace in Gotham

Along side Bane , The Joker and Catwoman would appear further solidifying the idea that the film is a reboot and not a sequel to the Burton films.

Other villains such as Two Face and Riddler would appear throughout the film to wear down The Batman before Bane breaks him.

Ultimately it would be up to Bruce , in an homage to High Noon to regain his strength and take on the one man who beat him .

To further differentiate this Batman from the prior version, The new Bruce Wayne would be an outgoing Philanthropist and Gotham's golden son .
Unlike The Keaton version , he would be a man about town , and Gotham's most eligible bachelor.

However, in the films beginning , The Caped Crusader is the subject of debate, with Gotham City divided about his effectiveness.

The film would also find Bruce skeptical about his usefulness and going through a mid life crisis of sorts only to be tested by the stronger and cunning Bane.

Casting

BATMAN / BRUCE WAYNE
With Keaton gone and a new direction a forgone conclusion , the idea of casting a twenty something Batman is briefly considered .
However , The Director and The Producer ultimately feel, for the story to work, The character needs to be a veteran and not a wet behind the ears Dark Knight.
Actors such as Alec Baldwin, Tom Hanks, Pierce Brosnan and Bruce Willis are all considered to play the new Batman, but it's Tombstone actor Kurt Russell who ultimately gets the role.
McTiernan feels he has the edge and grit to play a tough as nails Batman, but the Roguish, bad boy charm , to play Bruce Wayne.

BANE
For the role of the fairly recent and undefined Batman comics villain, producers don't just want to hire a wrestler turned actor .
At the same time, they want an actor who could be convincingly intimidating and a screen presence that could convince audiences he could break The Batman.
While Ron Perlman and Clancy Brown are considered and audition, Bruickheimer wants one of the world's biggest starts, Arnold Schwarzenegger, for the part.
Casting Schwarzenegger would generate automatic interest in the next Batman film , and would prove to be a charismatic and intimating foe.

Much to the productions surprise, Arnold agrees to play the Goliath , but the star would receive top billing for the role.

CATWOMAN
While many actresses who were considered for the Catwoman role a few years earlier , once again throw their hats into the ring, it's Basic Instinct's Sharon Stone,
whose cast to play a very different version of the Batman character than Pfeiffer or Newmar .

TWO FACE
For the role of Two Face, The producers have another casting coup with superstar Mel Gibson agreeing to play the classic Batman villain, though in a much smaller role.

RIDDLER
For the role of Bane's henchman , who helps to uncover Bruce Wayne's identity, Willem Dafoe is cast .

THE JOKER
While Dennis Hopper and Willem Dafoe are considered for the Clown Prince of Crime, James Woods is cast for a more sinister, controlled, and manipulative version of the Joker.

ALFRED PENNYWORTH
Though Anthony Hopkins is approached for the role, it is Sean Connery who McTiernan worked with on The Hunt For Red October,
whose cast in the role of Batman's loyal butler and solider in the field.
It's yet another unexpected and surprising casting coupe .

THE SCARECROW
Runner up Brad Dourif gives such an impressive screentest, that he's cast as Scarecrow instead.

OTHER SUPPORTING ROLES
Veteran Actor Robert Duvall is cast as Commissioner Gordon while Total Recall actress Rachel Ticton is cast Batman's partner Renee Montoya.

Agreed he would have been an absolutely fantastic Superman.

But I think there was no better option for Shazam in the early late 90s early 00s than Fraser. He had the perfect blend of action and comedy chops.

Just take the Mummy Cast and you’ve got a good Shazam movie.. Fraser as Shazam and Vosloo as Black Adam.

Dwayne just didn’t have the chops for Black Adam even though he looked the part. Should’ve given him the pointy ears and widows peak haircut

Another guy that could’ve been great as Shazam in the 90s is Patrick Warburton. Would’ve loved to see that if they really leaned into the comedy angle.

Levi and Dwayne both sucked in their respective roles. People called me crazy for hating Levi’s performance in the first Shazam, but by the time the second one came out everyone was like “alright yeah… he really does suck”. I didn’t wanna be right about something so negative but he was terrible.

I also thought Cavill was terrible but that’s a whole nother can of worms… terrible American accent and the range of a bug.

John Krasinski doesn’t look like Superman at all but he would’ve been a great Superman performance wise.

Due South actor Paul Gross is someone I think could have made a good Superman or Shazam circa the 1990s .
I remember seeing his name on the internet for fan castings for Superman back in the 90s.

SUPERMAN ( 1996)
Director : Chris Columbus
Producer : Jon Peters
Screenplay : Michael France and David Koepp
1731092165646.png

Project History
As Joel Schumacher begins to revive the Batman Film Franchise , Warner Brothers is eager to revive it's dormant Superman franchise .
Plans to continue with the previous four films are abandoned by the beginning of the decade , and instead the studio is interested rebooting the series with a new continuity and a new actor.
Though the television series , Lois And Clark : The New Adventures Of Superman remains on the air, Warner Brothers wants the character to return to the big screen after a several years absence.

While the Death Of Superman storyline is briefly entertained , ultimately, it's decided that the best path forward is with a rookie Superman starting out in Metropolis.
While directors like Ron Howard , Carl Reiner, and Steven Spielberg are all approached , they each turn down the director's chair .
Ultimately , it's Home Alone director Chris Columbus who excepts the directing duties .
Filming begins in Locations in New York and Los Angeles during the Summer of 1995 for a Summer 1996 release date , while screenwriters Michael France and David Koepp are brought in to pen the film.

Screenplay
The film is envisioned as a sweeping epic much like The Donner film a generation earlier focusing on Clark's journey from youth to adulthood.
The screenplay begins on Krypton and retells the origins of Krypton's destruction and Superman's arrival on Earth as an infant .

However, unlike the Donner version, the film reflects the John John Byrne era of the comics thus both Kent's survive and are supporting characters throughout the film.
Additionally, as Martha Kent makes Clark's Superman suit , and the Fortress Of Solitude unlike The Donner film, the fortress of Solitude is absent.

In a surprising move, Lex Luthor is absent from the first film .
Instead The production wants to focus on a smaller scale and lesser known villain for Superman's freshman outing.
Instead of the " greatest criminal mastermind of our age " The rookie hero faces off against the corrupt forces of Intergang and their deadliest assassin , The Toyman.
As Lois Lane gets closer and closer to unmasking the head of Intergang , Bruno Manheim , she becomes the target of Intergang's wrath .

However, it's the appearance of the Man Of Steel, and his disruption of the organization, which gives the citizens of Metropolis hope ,and gives Ms Lane a guardian angel.
Meanwhile , Lois is saddled with a wet behind the ears cub reporter Clark Kent , who , while seeming a goofy pushover, also isn't all he appears to be.

Unlike the Donner films and the current TV series, the romance between Superman and Lois isn't a focus of this first film, though the attraction in evident , and the seeds for a Superman/ Lois/ Clark triangle are laid .
In fact, it's Toyman whose twisted obsession with Lois lane which begins to derail Intergang's plans to rub out the reporter , and when Intergang see's that their man has become love sick and unreliable , they attempt to rub him out and Toyman becomes a threat that's too big for Intergang and The Police to handle.

The climax would feature Superman battling a battalion of flying robots and machines in a nod to the Fleischer cartoons of the 1940s .
In the end Superman defeats the Toyman who eventually leds him to Manheim .
With Manheim and Toyman in custody thanks to Superman, and with Lois Lane's expose on the group , Intergang comes apart at the seems .
The Efforts of The Man Of Steel and The Fearless reporter renew faith in the future of Metropolis.

In an effort to distinguish the new film from both the Donner films and The Lois And Clark tv series, the Superman costume is an updated version of the Max Fleisher suit with its red S logo imposed on a black emblem .

Casting
As with the Donner film, Producer Jon Peters and Director Chris Columbus want an all star cast to surrounding Superman and Lois Lane .
Robin Williams is cast as The Toyman , while Anthony Hopkins signs on to play Jor El, Paul Newman and Ellen Burstyn agree to play The Kents ,
And Tommy Lee Jones is cast as Perry White .

Brenden Fraser is cast as The Man Of Steel , while Sandra Bullock is cast as Lois Lane .
Ving Rhames is cast as menacing Bruno Manheim while Angela Bassett plays detective Maggie Sawyer .
Finally , up and coming actor Giovanni Ribisi is cast as Jimmy Olsen .
