DC Comics started their Wizard World Philadelphia programming Friday afternoon with “Counting Down: So Begins the End,” dedicated to their current weekly series, Countdown. The panel was led by DC’s Vice President of Sales Bob Wayne, who was joined by editors Mike Carlin, Eddie Berganza, and artist Jim Calafiore. DC Executive Editor Dan DiDio is at Heroes Con

on hand from Heroes Con was Matt Brady, where DC made a huge dual announcement…

Dan Didio got a call from Bob Wayne in Philly and Didio asked if it was alright that he announced that DC was cancelling The Flash with issue #13

DiDio said there's going to be a new All-Flash #1 coming out, adding that that Mark Waid is writing All-Flash and they'll be an article on it coming up. Of course he meant right here at Newsarama, and you can read our interview with Mark Waid right here...

The first slide was on Countdown, and that led in to talking about Countdown to Adventure, the mini-series featuring the space heroes from 52. Berganza said it picks up on what Animal Man, Adam Strange, and Starfire have been up to since that series, including someone else on Rann acting like their new hero, and something going on with Animal Man and Starfire's powers, plus the new character Forerunner.

Countdown to Mystery was announced, which follows the same two-feature format of Countdown to Adventure. Steve Gerber will write a story on the helmet of Fate, and Eclipso will be featured in the backup stories by Matt Sturges.

Look for more on that book here at Newsarama later today…

The promotional image of a fallen Flash laying defeated among the Rogues was shown, and it was hinted that would be the cover to issue #13.

Wayne talked about Countdown; The Search for Ray Palmer, although there was no accompanying slide. Ron Marz, the writer of the project, said Art Adams is doing the cover and that "the tour of the new DC Multi-verse begins here," and hinted that it'll have some sort of intersection with the Wildstorm Universe. Donna Troy, Jason Todd, and Kyle Rayner - accompanied by a Monitor - are the stars. Six issues. Marz said he was happy about writing Kyle Rayner again.

Berganza said the team is called the "Challengers of the Beyond," and will also be exploring the Crime Syndicate world, as well as the "Blood Reign" vampire world.

Next slide was Infinity Inc. by Peter Milligan, which will have a preview online next week at DC's Web site.

Suicide Squad will be back as an 8-issue mini-series, written by classic "Suicide Squad" writer John Ostrander.

After this short slideshow presentation, the floor was opened up to Q&A...

A reader asked if there was a big project coming up in 2008 at the end of Countdown, and did we see the last of the Dibnys at the end of 52? The panel was non-committal for both questions, but Wayne said there was a lot of stuff coming in 2008 and that he expects we haven't seen the last of the Dibnys.

"Who's writing the issue exploring the 'Blood Reign' universe?" Berganza: "that's still being worked out."

"When will Stephanie Brown get a memorial in the Batcave?" Wayne: "The last time I was at a convention, this question was asked and no one liked the answer, so we're going to skip it." (read: not gonna happen).

"Are we going to see Kyle get his own book again, and can Ron (Marz) write it?" Wayne: "I think you need to see and wait and see events unfold," especially with the ‘Search for Ray Palmer; issue Marz is writing. Berganza said Kyle fans should read the Sinestro story in Green Lantern, and Carlin added that Kyle is still a major player, even if he doesn't have his own title.

New Doom Patrol comic? Wayne: "We're confident that at some time between now and 2030 they'll be a new Doom Patrol book."

"Are you going to renumber Wonder Woman like The Flash? And any hint who the new Flash is?" Wayne: First question, no. Second question, "We've said more than enough already."

What happened to Alan Scott's eye?" Wayne: "I'm sure you'll see something about it," no pun intended, presumably.

After someone asked about a possible return of "Who's Who," Wayne asked if anyone wanted to see the backups from 52 (and the upcoming villain origins in Countdown) collected.

Reader: "I wanted to know if we'll ever find out what Inertia's been up to since Impulse?" Berganza: "He's a part of Titans East."

"Are we going to see some lineup changes in JLofA," like Martian Manhunter and Flash making their way back on the roster? Berganza: "By issue #13 you'll be very happy with some of that."

"What's going to happen with Batwoman and the Question?" Wayne directed the fan to tomorrow's DC Universe panel, and Carlin says that both characters will pop up in Countdown.

New Showcase reprints? Wayne: "A lot. We're doing two of them a month." He asked fans what they wanted to see in the format, and people yelled out things like "Suicide Squad" and "Doom Patrol." One person suggested "Giffen Justice League," which got applause, to which Wayne joked, "Aren't most of those characters dead?"

"Who's doing the art on Countdown to Mystery?" Justiano - Dr. Fate sections, Stephen Segovia on the Eclipso parts.

An audience member asked why companies reuse old titles like "Brave & the Bold," to which Wayne answered: "Trademark law."

A fan asked if DC was worried about fans reacting negatively to the stream of big events, presumably from both publishers. Carlin said that it's a commercially-driven business, and that's sort of the nature of the beast.

"Are we going to see the Secret Six anytime soon?" Wayne: "Yes," his taciturn response indicating a switch to quick answers in the wayning (pun intended) moments of the panel…

Since JSofA brought back Starman, will he gets his own series soon?" Wayne said to wait for the end of the Justice League/Society crossover.

A fan asked for a Charlton Blue Beetle Showcase, and Wayne indicated they were already available in an Archive edition.

The panel wrapped up by the promise of more announcements at their panel tomorrow, and distribution of two of the "Countdown" pins.

I have to say I am stocked as hell for Search for Ray Palmer. Kyle Rayner, Ray Palmer written by Ron Marz. Couldn't want more.

"Countdown" #31
DC Comics got the ball rolling at the HeroesCon in Charlotte this afternoon with their DC Nation panel. On the panel were Executive Editor Dan DiDio, “52” editor Michael Siglain and Coordinating Editor Jann Jones, along with artists Jamal Igle, Ethan Van Sciver and an alpaca. Igle was introduced by DiDio as “the man who protects Nightwing from me.”

After jokingly reminding everybody that what happens in the room stays in the room, DiDio had a serious question for the audience, asking those in attendance if the current state of the DC Universe, especially “52” and “Countdown” is making sense. His answer was a resounding yes from the crowd and he explained why that was important. “The main thing is to coordinate the DC Universe to where it's moving in real time. Each month, stories in DC will reflect what's going on in ‘Countdown.' If it's an important scene, you'll see it from different angles [in different books]. The same event might be seen from several points of view.”

A question came from the audience about the cryptic clues seen on Rip Hunter's chalk board in “52” and if they have all been answered. That subject was tackled by both DiDio and Michael Siglain, who confirmed that time is still broken.

"The Four Horsemen" #1, "Amazons Attack" #4
Another question was about the Multiverse, specifically if the Earth we're reading about now is Earth-1. DiDio said, “New Earth is New Earth. One thing we want to make clear is this is a new Multiverse. There are real rules to the Multiverse and how it works.” Throughout the panel, DiDio kept joking and making references to a possible series of one shots that would involve the Multiverse.

At this point, DiDio paused and asked the crowd if they liked the weekly book concept. He was met with a definite roar of approval from those in attendance. The cheers quickly turned to boos however, after they heard his answer to a comment about the death of the Question. A man near the front was wondering why they had killed the Question, when it appeared the character was at the height of his popularity. DiDio answered the man with a question of his own. “How many people cared till we killed him?” Referring not just to the Question but also to Ted Kord, the former Blue Beetle.

"Action Comics" #856, "Green Lantern" #21
DiDio described Kord as an overweight heart attack victim who was flopping around the “Birds of Prey” book when the decision was made to kill him. “We made him more interesting so his death could be more interesting,” DiDio said. “And we're sorry.”

Jann Jones told the story of how she first found out about the plans for the Beetle's death, and characterized her reaction as, “Aww, you made him cool and killed him.”

Above all however, the biggest news of the day was the announcement of both the end and a new beginning for the Flash. Joking around with Bob Wayne, who was on the phone from the Wizard World convention in Philadelphia, DiDio said they would never do such a thing as cancel the book with #13 and then send out false solicitations for #14 & 15. It turned out, however, that's exactly what DC has done, with #13 ending the current “The Flash: The Fastest Man Alive” series.

"The Flash" #13 and "Countdown to Mystery" #1
However, the next words DiDio uttered were enough to cause almost everyone in the room to go crazy: “Mark Waid back on ‘Flash.'”

Coming up in September, a special one-shot will be released called “All Flash” #1, written by Mark Waid. Then, sometime in the fall, fans will see the monthly “The Fkash” book back in action. That doesn't mean the book comes complete with a new #1 issue, however. When a fan asked why reboot the title again, DiDio answered back, “Who said it was a reboot?”

The much talked about new Dr. Fate book was also asked about. DiDio said there's been a slight change in plan. He asked is anyone had heard about “Countdown to Adventure” a title spinning out of “52” and featuring Adam Strange, Starfire and, the crowd roared, “Animal Man!” DiDio announced that plans are now in the works for “Countdown to Mystery,” a companion title which will feature the new Dr. Fate as the lead character.

:D :D :D :D :D :D

I know from firsthand experience that these convention articles never really capture the actual feel of the sessions, things are left out and misinterpretations happen across the board...but with that said, Didio sounded kinda dickly in those quotes.

Anyway.

I worry about overmilking the Countdown hype, especially considering that it's actually garnering a lot of bad hype. Normally I might say, "Well, it'll probably be good 'cause it looks like they've got a really good idea of what they're doing and have a solid, thought-out plan of approach to this." But so far those plans have ranged from tolerable to outright mediocre.

Why is Natasha doing her "Starlight" thing again? What happened to her armor? Her Starlight thing is stupid and ugly. Not to mention she shouldn't have those powers anyway.

There's some covers that apparently look like a Green Arrow/Black Canary...ongoing? Miniseries? Special? I don't care, it's got Connor! Though I am very curious as to who's writing it. I must hear more of this.

New Flash title? AGAIN?

Argh.

At least it has Waid and old numbering.

EDIT: Actually, I've got to say, even if I don't read Flash currently, I'm done being dicked around by DC. I'm going to stick to Justice Society of America and Teen Titans. Maybe I'l feel differently by September, and somewhere I hope I do, but DC really fell of the wagon after Infinite Crisis for me.

you talking about this?

That, and the cover to the right of it.

ahh i see.. i didnt see that page :P (got that cover from another forum :P)
and i suspect that GA/CB #1 is a classic "rescue Ollie" issue

That, and the cover to the right of it.

Yeah, Cliff Chang too. Which for me is almost enough to make me pick it up.

Just read about Countdown to Mystery on Newsarama, I think I'll pick it up. I'd rather commit myself to a maxiseries than another ongoing also. Bad to hear about Steve Gerber's health though (read on his blog) he sounds like he's been really, really ill and it's stopped him being able to do a new ongoing.

Man, Didio is really taking stuff out of the Joey Q playbook.

One of the next questions inspired an interesting discussion of what the purpose of comics actually is. A fan asked if there was a point to the "Amazons Attack" crossover, and DiDio again answered with a question of his own, asking what books the man read.

"Batman" #666 and "Superman" #666
"'Green Lantern' and 'Batman,'" the fan anwered.

"Entertainment," DiDio said. "That's your answer. Our goal is to entertain." He added, however, "Yes, there was a point to 'Amazons Attack' and maybe it's possible something could happen to Wonder Girl during the event that might cause her to spin out into her own mini-series later this year. Also there might be another story or two about Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters following the event."

Yeah that -- in addition to the "Did you even care before we killed him?" -- was the dickly part.

Oh this?

A man near the front asked why DC had killed the Question when it appeared the character was at the height of his popularity. DiDio answered the man with a question of his own.: "How many people cared til lwe killed him?"

DiDio's answer referred not just to the Question, but also to Ted Kord, the late Blue Beetle. DiDio described Kord as an overweight heart attack victim who was flopping around the "Birds of Prey" book when the decision was made to kill him. "We made him more interesting so his death could be more interesting," DiDio said. "And we're sorry."

I like how he didn't answer the question about The Question, because it is without a doubt the most valid fan question on that panel.

And he's on my **** list for his Ted Kord comment.:cmad:

Oh my! That is good news.

The Question answer is pretty damn stupid, it's a fact that the Question became very popular because of JLU cartoon, nothing to do with him in 52 or him dying. DC dropped the ball with him really.

Yup.

Green Arrow/Black Canary with Winnick and Cliff Chiang on art.
What.

No seriously though, what?

WHAT?

...At least now I get what Winick was talking about when he said he was going to bring Shado back.

What the hell, Judd. I thought that even you had realized you'd run out of steam.

In other news, a Wonder Girl miniseries? It feels...correct, somehow. Let's see how it goes.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
.. ohh my god... BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Im gonna get pissed as hell if Dinah somehow screws up the flowers for her wedding.. THATS HER DAY JOB!
hope there is some fun with that ..

I don't actually mind anything up to the wedding itself, to be honest. The wedding planning and bachelor party stuff is...cute. And c'mon, everyone always does constantly complain about there being too many funerals and not enough happy events in the DCU. It's always BIG COSMIC CRISIS this and WOMEN IN REFRIGERATORS that, and frankly character-based stories are getting rarer and rarer. Once in a while, it might be good to just have a big shameless excuse to do so.

The fact that it feels about a thousand times more organic and natural than the last big comic book wedding of T'Cholla and Orowrong doesn't hurt, either.

LULZ u see what i did by combining words there.

Agreed, though I am a bit disappointed that Winick is going to be writing Green Arrow/Black Canary. He's not a bad writer, but it's time for a fresh start with a fresh writer.

That's really my sole complaint. The past few arcs of Green Arrow have been terrible. If Winick had been just killing time until the series ends then, okay, whatever, but I never got that impression. I got the impression that it was his genuine effort.

Hope that I'm wrong.
