DC Universe Online

With this game do I have to play it online? I don't play MMO's, never have. But a game based on DCU is interesting to me.

Can I just buy it an play it out with me being the only controlled character? Does it work that way? Without connecting it to the internet? Without paying a monthly fee? I don't know anything about these kinds of games, and don't know if that's possible.
