DCEU Audience Sentiment Survey Results Part 1 - Demographics & Film Ratings

First I want to thank the 800 people from Reddit, Tumblr, SuperHeroHype, my friends and all others who took part in the survey and promoted it.

Please answer: Do you support the recasting of Henry Cavill? This will be included in the next result. SURVEY LINK: https://goo.gl/forms/MfLhlyyytlCzrCdo1

See the charts in my Tumblr post here: https://pinoypugita.tumblr.com/post/169923415458/dceu-audience-sentiment-survey-results-part-1

Important Notes:
- This survey is non-profit, made by a fan with some minimal background and work experience in research and statistics and in no way should be taken as an expert opinion.
- It was conducted in December 2017 prior to important announcements like the new DCEU slate, Hamada’s appointment, JL Blu-Ray release and others.
- Most survey respondents are fans or those active in fandoms and visit online DCEU spaces. Therefore, the results cannot be used to infer the sentiments of the overall film market.
- Sample sizes of age, sex, and other demographics are not equal

Notes on the film scores:
- The ratings for enjoyment and quality of the films are separated
Respondents are given an option to pick “0” or “Haven’t seen the film” and these are excluded from the analysis.
- Respondents who indicated they haven’t seen the film, yet still rated the film in enjoyment or quality, are also excluded from analysis of movie scores. However, they are still included in other parts of the survey.
- Smaller groups are sometimes combined as “Others” for a more significant sample size
- No respondent answered all movies with a single score. There was no “spamming” of low or high scores.

Summary of Part 1 Results: Demographics
- A total of 800 respondents took part in the survey
- People in the 20-29 years old range is the highest proportion of respondents [413 total], followed by 13-19 [212 total] and above 30- 39 [131 total], and above 40 [44 total]
- The median age of all respondents is 24.5 years old. Male respondents have an estimated median age of 26 years old, while female respondents have a median age of 22 years old.
- Based on region, 6/10 of respondents are from North America, 2/10 are from Europe, and 2/10 are from Asia, South America, Middle East, Australia and Others.
- The highest number respondents come from Tumblr [320], followed by the DCEU Reddit sub [286], SuperHeroHype forums [102], then Other Reddit subs [75]
- The distribution of sex is highly skewed in communities. DCEU Reddit sub is 91% male, SHH forums is 93% male, while Tumblr is 78% female
- Most respondents are fans of both DCEU & MCU [447], followed by DCEU-only fans [192] and MCU-only fans [113].
- Parents make up only 7% of the total respondents
- Film is the most accessible medium to all respondents followed by TV cartoons and comics.
- Respondents above thirty years old watch live action TV shows more than the younger groups and had been exposed to TV cartoons more than the teenage respondents
- Male respondents have a slightly higher exposure to all DC media than females. Notably, 8/10 males in all age groups play DC-related video games, slightly falling to 7/10 in the thirties age group. Meanwhile, only 5/10 of female respondents or 3/10 females above thirty play video games.

Summary of Part 1 Results: Film Scores
- Wonder Woman is given the highest average enjoyment and critical scores among all groups: fans vs non fans, female vs male, communities and all ages.
- Teenagers have higher average ratings compared to older respondents. However, the difference between age groups are minimal
- Justice League and Suicide Squad have slightly higher ratings in enjoyment than its quality, while all other films have nearly equal scores for both criteria
- DCEU-only fans rated all films above the median score, with SS the lowest
- MCU-only fans rated all films below median score with the exception of Wonder Woman
- Fans of both DCEU and MCU also rated films above the median score, except for SS. The same group gave Wonder Woman the highest scores.
- BvS is the film with the highest range of average scores with 8.6 as the highest and 2.8 as the lowest
- Female respondents have higher average ratings for all DCEU films except Man of Steel.
- Wonder Woman is the highest rated by both sexes, with the difference between male and female scores also the highest followed by Justice League and SS
- While the female respondents are younger on average, the average scores of females and males in their twenties produced similar results.
- Based on fan communities, the highest average scores of Man of Steel and Batman v Superman are from the DCEU Reddit sub
- Meanwhile, the highest average scores of Wonder Woman, Justice League and Suicide Squad are from Tumblr.
- SuperHeroHype forums and Other Reddit subs gave lower average scores even if their averages as taken separately. “Others” has a small sample size that is insufficient for a separate analysis.
- Batman v Superman followed by Suicide Squad received the most varied ratings among participants
- Meanwhile, Wonder Woman has the least variation of ratings with most scores close to the average
- Since this survey was conducted just weeks after Justice League was premiered, it has the lowest viewership with a total of 99 respondents not having seen the film
- Batman v Superman is the most viewed movie in the survey, with only 25 respondents not having seen the film

Part 2 of the survey, that includes opinions on Zack Snyder, Joss Whedon, and WB will be released within 2-3 weeks.

If you have questions, I’ll try to answer them if I can. The raw google forms results wouldn’t be available for now as they are highly skewed towards male respondents in their twenties, and the goal of this survey is to consider the demographic factors.
---
My apologies for the delay of posting results due to personal matters and some technical difficulties. My laptop is old and broken, and some number and formula keys do not work anymore. My laptop replacement got delayed til February.

If you haven’t seen the charts, please do. I made them with so much love.

Feel free to share to other relevant places.
