Once Upon a Time creators making a summer camp horror series for ABC Family
Exclusive: First entirely new series from 'Once Upon' team in years
BY JAMES HIBBERD

The Once Upon a Time creators are launching a horror series.

Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis have received a series order for a project titled Dead of Summer from ABC Family (a.k.a. the Network Soon to Be Known as “Freeform”). Once Upon writer Ian Goldberg is also on board as the showrunner for the project which represents ABC Family’s first-ever horror series.

“Dead of Summer is about what happens when summer camp goes wrong – really, really wrong,” said Karey Burke, executive vice president of programming for ABC Family. “The horror genre is new for us and I’m thrilled to have Adam, Eddy and Ian bring their immeasurable talent to our network and usher us into this new space.”

We’re hearing the show was originally pitched as a “John Hughes meets John Carpenter” anthology series,* with the first season set in 1989.

The official series logline: “Set in the late 1980s, school is out for the summer, and a sun-drenched season of firsts beckons the counselors at Camp Clearwater, a seemingly idyllic Midwestern summer camp, including first loves, first kisses – and first kills. Clearwater’s dark, ancient mythology awakens, and what was supposed to be a summer of fun soon turns into one of unforgettable scares and evil at every turn. Part coming-of-age story, part supernatural horror story, Dead of Summer is a bold, new series that mixes genres as it examines the light and dark of a summer like no other.”

The Dead of Summer deal doesn’t necessarily mean anything dire for the future of Once Upon as many producers have more than one drama on the air (heck, Shonda Rhimes would probably be bored with two shows). Still, this represents the first entirely new series for Horowitz and Kitsis (so not including the Wonderland spin-off) since launching Once Upon in 2011.

In addition to Once Upon, Horowitz and Kitsis also wrote the film Tron: Legacy, and worked on ABC’s Lost. ABC Family is flipping the switch to become Freeform in January.
Love. Hope this is more throwback-y than Scream/Scream Queens have been.

Elizabeth Mitchell and Elizabeth Lail Cast
Mitchell (Lost, Once Upon a Time, V) will star as Deb, the new owner of Camp Clearwater. Once a camper herself, Deb has her heart set on bringing back the magic of the summer camp she loved. She exudes authority while simultaneously presenting a warm and welcoming vibe. Behind closed doors however, Deb seems to value her control over the camp for a much darker reason.

Lail, meanwhile, is set as Amy, a clever but nervous counselor who is new to Camp Clearwater. Amy is not unfamiliar with being the new girl in social situations and the pitfalls that come with it, so she tries hard to fit in with the already bonded counselors. As the others reminisce about their past summers at camp, Amy is the first to discover clues that something disturbing is going on at Camp Clearwater.

Premieres tonight.

So I liked the premiere. Creepy. And I liked Amy's story.

It is throwbacky in a good way. Just don't play a game of "spot the anachronisms", because you'll find some.

It was ok but between this/Scream/SQ, I can't with the "new girl", all of whom look like they could be sisters, are innocent and quiet and just seem very boring.

I thought it was pretty good. I like it better than Scream.

The 'final girls' in the horror genre are often pretty bland characters in my opinion.

The last character left alive to confront the killer in a Slasher Movie.

The character in question tends to follow a certain set of characteristics. The most obvious one is being (almost) Always Female and morally pure. She'll also almost certainly be a virgin, remain fully clothed, avoid Death by Sex, and probably won't drink alcohol, smoke tobacco, or take drugs, either. Finally, she'll probably turn out to be more intelligent and resourceful than the other victims, occasionally even evolving into a type of Action Girl by the movie's end.

The character seems to be the living embodiment of stereotypical conservative attitudes of what women "should be".

The Final Girl is usually but not always brunette, often in contrast to a promiscuous blonde who traditionally gets killed off.

The final girl is the "investigating consciousness" of the film, moving the narrative forward and, as such, she exhibits intelligence, curiosity, and vigilance.

Season finale tonight (Episode 10).

Can't say I saw it coming but it came across like quite the cheat!

On one hand, I think it could have been handled better. On the other, I like it because I like the femme fatale trope.

EDIT: Saw the season (or series?) finale.

Overall the show had a high body count and wasn't afraid to kill off main characters like a good horror film should and it was on ABC Family Freeform which is all the more surprising. Jessie ended up the hero and it's sad that her old friendship/love interest with Garrett isn't meant to be due to the circumstance.
