Dealing with goths and emos

Basically, what I get out of this Goth and Emo debate is that....

I'm comparing this to the late 70's/early 80's.

Goths are the heavy metalers and Emos are the punk rock kids? Is that a correct assessment?

Because if Emos are punk rock kids they seriously need to learn exactly what punk rock stands for. Because today's punk music is....well, it's not punk...it's just pop rock pretty much, which basically goes against everything that punk is/was.

Or I'm wrong and the comparison is stupid.
Well, yeah, you have it nailed. They tend to liken themselves to punks, but they're really far from it.

What's an emo? Imagine gothics are Pepsi. Emo's are Pepsi Light.

I have nothing against goths though. Emo's on the other hand...

Kill 'em.

Kill 'em all I say.

Goths are from the early 80s, they started as an offshoot of New Wave.

And (real) emos are indie. But pop-punk is called "emo" now.

They aren't connected even vaguely. This thread is one of the only places I've seen them being treated as similar.

Wow, it's a good thing we spend so much time discussing such relevant matters. If both the "Goth" and "Emo" kids would stop whinning about who has it worse and begin to realise that comparitively (to the rest of the world) they've got it pretty god damned good, then maybe they could grow up and help us deal with some real ****ing issues.

For the love of God, goths don't whine. It's a visual thing. It has nothing to do with personality.

"The subculture is marked by its emphasis on individualism, tolerance for (sexual) diversity, a strong emphasis on creativity, a dislike of social conservatism and a strong tendency towards cynicism, but even these ideas are not common to all goths. Goth ideology is based far more on aesthetics than ethics or politics."

A little ridiculous that you form a group (or subculture) based on individualism is it not? You can share all those ideals, but I'm afraid that as soon as you label yourself as being "Goth" you've wasted your time trying to achieve individuality.

They started as a just people with similar ideals. They didn't label themselves Goths. Other people did.

And if you choose to dress the same you can. The point is that people should be allowed to dress however they want. If you want to all dress the same, that's fine. People shouldn't feel obligated by society to be the same. That's all.

And the point was you're treating two completely different groups of people the same, and being really condescending by acting as if they are a bunch of whiny kids and that you know better.

You're making statements based on stereotypes and archetypes that aren't true. Emo is a style of music. Goth is a style of dress, and a ideology. Neither has anything to do with the personalities of the people involved. It's a stereotype that "emos" piss and moan about things. It's a stereotype that goths are all depressed. Both were made based on a few people, and made by people who didn't know what they were talking about.

They are connected through the posers, who are sadly about 70% of both subcultures. There's nothing wrong with a real goth or emo, but most of the goths and emos are just wannabes that **** the image up for the rest.

Bros are always good for a laugh for me. I (generally) like their (general) attitude. Emos and goths are too pissy. Plus Bros throw kick ass parties.

Is there black Emo&Goths?

I've met a few--not as many as white Emo/Goths, but I'd say they're about 13-20% the Emo/Goth population. :o

typically I dont like them, but I have 1 or 2 emo friends.
And they do whine way too much

Goths go out of their way to recognised as being different and then cry when people recognise them as such.

They're nothing more than an art gimmick. "Look at me, I'm Goth, I must be a great artist. My soul is sooo dark. Ooooooh. Watch out! it's comin' to get ya. here comes my dark soul. BooHoo, nobody likes me."

Right. I've heard that before, that the gothic style of today evolved from the New Wave style in the 80's. As I said earlier in the thread a couple of my long time friends have a gothic lifestyle. They dress normally most of the time though but on special occassions that get into their lifestyle. I respect them for it and they don't go pushing it on other people or bother people with it. Though, I'm a T-shirt and jeans type of guy and fashion is something that is beyond me at this point.

But everytime I see someone with their hair dyed, a million piercings in their face, and tatoos all over their body...I can't help but think to myself, "Wow, you are REALLY going out of your way in looking for attention". It may not be the case with a lot of people but I can't help but think that.

To me it's not about the lifestyle you lead or the way you dress, but it's in how you treat other people. That's all that matters and unfortunately there are too many people in this world who would rather quickly judge your personality on the way you dress, than how you act.

You know whats funny about goths. They aim to be different but by being different and hanging around each other they end up being the same making them exactly what they didnt want to be by doing the norm. So really there only accomplishments are smelling bad from lack of bathing and being annoying.
