TV Line has learned that Dean Cain and Helen Slater have joined the cast of CBS' upcoming "Supergirl" pilot in unspecified roles.
Both actors have a lengthy history with DC Comics' Superman franchise. Dean Cain previously starred as Superman in "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" for four seasons on ABC. He later appeared on the CW's "Smallville" as Dr. Curtis Knox. Slater starred as lead character Kara Zor-El in 1984's "Supergirl" feature film. She too had a guest-starring role on "Smallville" as Clark Kent's Kryptonian mother, Lara. Slater will star alongside the new Kara Zor-El, played by Melissa Benoist.

Cain and Slater are the latest additions to a fast-growing cast. In addition to series lead Benoist, "Supergirl" will also feature Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Chlyer Leigh as Supergirl's sister Alex and David Harewood as Hank Henshaw.

I just saw this on Comic Vine.
The idea is exciting, it's like John Wesley Shipp and Amanda Pays having roles in the new Flash series. ECSTATIC.
Dean Cain's especially news made more more excited, cause he is my favorite Superman actor, and I love his show.

There's absolutely no reason for the Kents or Jor-El and Lara to appear in the show based on what we know.

If they're playing 'paired' roles, they're most likely the Danverses.

But why would they just be guest roles. Kara's earth parents should at least be recurring.

Not necessarily. By the time the show starts, Kara's a young adult living on her own (possibly far away from the place where she spent her adolescent years with Alex and her foster parents), and it's entirely possible that the only ongoing connection she still has to her family life and home comes through Alex.

It's entirely possible that the Danverses might be needed only for a scene or two showing Kara's arrival on Earth and her integration into their family, which could easily be covered in a single one-off guest appearance.

It's also possible that, like with Emily Bett Rickards on Arrow, what is initially intended to only be a guest-spot could turn into something more down the line.

If they cast Dean Cain as an Older Superman. I will watch every single episode! I would then care less if Jimmy looks like Bane. :woot:

I think it would be awesome if he became Superman during the inevitable Flashpoint season all of these shows will be doing (granted that this is connected). How awesome would it be to see all of the different versions of our fav heroes come to life. older fans could get behind that, seeing the shows they came up with back to life.

Really cool casting.

My full thoughts on their casting:

Ah Okay I see. I just expected the parent to play more than just a possible one time thing. I expected to be like Barry's dad where he'd pop in every other episode or so.

I hope they're not playing the Danvers..... Dean and Helen deserve something better...

Smallville did it with Martha Kent.

Dean is going to have to lay off those twinkies if he wants to fit in that suit again. :woot:

Would love to see him as Jor-el. He'd look in his 30 if he lost 25 pounds.

I'm curious to see what roles they'll be playing. It's be kinda funny if it was Jor-El & Lara. Although in Helen's case this would be the second time she'll have played that role with "Smallville" being her previous time.

I don't think Slater is Lara. SV already beat Berlanti to the punch.

What if Cain is General Zod? :oldrazz:

I imagine they could be the Danvers. It just would be a little weird seeing Superman making out with Supergirl though.

That'd be boring, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Yeah, I'd rather it was Jor-El and Lara or Supergirl's Kryptonian parents. at least we could see them in costume again.

Cain could possibly be Zor-El, but Laura Benanti is already playing Alura Zor-El, and there's really no reason for us to see the Kents, Jor-El, and or Lara Jor-El.

Boring though you might think it is, the Danverses are the most likely option if they're playing paired roles (which they might not be given that Slater filmed her part Friday and we haven't yet heard when Cain starts filming).

They shoulda had Cain play hank so he could eventually become cyborg superman. That woulda been pretty cool
