Usual thoughts/rants:
- It seems Marvel will be releasing more material about the end of FEAR ITSELF than during it. We have BATTLE SCARS and THE FEARLESS and launching off, DEFENDERS. I'll have to carefully decide what to buy. DEFENDERS is very tempting, but Fraction's lost almost all of his goodwill with me. I'll nab that Handbook in an instant, though.
- X-23 apparently joins the cadets in AVENGERS ACADEMY #23. In fairness, this may not be a one-issue gimmick; this week, Marjorie Liu stated that she'll note this subplot in X-23's solo title, which seems a daft thing to do if the move doesn't last longer than an issue. Still, it does suggest that it's a girl that leaves the cast, which suggests Veil may either die or decide to go rogue. I'm betting on the latter. Who will be more emotionless; Finesse or X-23? In fairness, Finesse has a perfectly fine personality as a b****, whereas X-23 is either mute or growling. I wonder what "classic villain" is returning.
- Alan Davis on CAPTAIN AMERICA #6 is great. I doubt he's actually joining the regular art team; he hasn't done regular art on an ongoing series since, gosh, about one of Chris Claremont's last stabs on UXM years ago. But, stranger things have happened. Ed Brubaker has wisely been willing to allow a legendary talent a spotlight issue out of the blue during his CAPTAIN AMERICA run; his issue with the late Gene Colan won an Eisner, after all.
- AVENGERS SOLO will apparently serve as a stealth revival of Hawkeye's title with Jim McCann co-writing. In fairness, prior versions of that usually starred Hawkeye.
- Is anyone thrilled to see more of Osborn and HAMMER? No, I didn't think so.
- AVENGERS: X-SANCTION is what used to be called CABLE REBORN, before someone got around to figuring that people might turn out in larger droves if "Avengers" or "X" is in the title, and not "Cable". It's Jeph Loeb, it's reviving a character nobody asked for or missed after barely a year, this looks like a desperate train-wreck. It should sell modestly in the Top 30.
- Not surprised Ultimate Spider-Woman is back in USM. Back when I was leaving after USM's Clone Saga, Bendis seemed thrilled with her. It will be curious if Miles Morales will prove more competent than Peter Parker in the role of Spider-Man. Will he be able to beat at least one opponent without outside assistance or pure luck? Will he manage to avoid having his ENTIRE supporting cast as well as ENTIRE rogues gallery unmask him within a few year's time yet his identity not be made public?
- AVENGERS SPIDER-MAN #2, as in two timely, monthly issues drawn by Joe Mad? I'll believe it when I see it. I'd be stunned if we see a third. He hasn't drawn anything for Marvel since ULTIMATES 3, which didn't ship on schedule and that was a mini.
- Guiseppe Camuncoli filling the Marcos Martin role as the 3rd ASM artist on the rotation behind Stefano Caselli and Humberto Ramos is a good move. The return of Vulture (and likely his "flock") as well as the Sinister Six's big plot. Sounds good.
- VENOM #10 sounds good, and it looks like the revelation of who Spider-King was will become something of a subplot here. It will also double-ship this month. So far, this has been a resounding success for me.
- ALPHA FLIGHT has gone from mini series to ongoing, and I wonder if by issue 7 if that move will have seen short-sighted. At any rate, the inevitable Wolverine guest shot happens, and it's been a fun ride overall. Likely the best AF volume in years.
- ANNIHILATORS: EARTHFALL sounds okay. Not thrilled about the obligatory fight against the Avengers at the start, but having them all fight Magus sounds good. The dilemma is that "DnA" haven't been as steady on the Annihilators in terms of characterization than they were with Nova, GOTG and Star-Lord.
- Not much to say about DAREDEVIL #7 besides it looks awesome, and that cover of DD making a snow angel on a roof is terrific. Waid's writing is terrific enough to make the book stand out alone, but the art itself is also worth it as well. Hopefully, this becomes a dark horse hit.
- Having seen that "the Battle of Reeds" is lasting through to issue #13 is making me reconsider how long I stay on FF if Hickman doesn't improve a little.
- VILLAINS FOR HIRE is a mini series rather than an ongoing, which is wise since H4H tanked. Misty and Paladin are apparently hiring villains to counter Purple Man's scheme. Sounds fine, although her choice of villains seems odd. Prior previews had Tiger-Shark and Stilt-Man on her initial roster. You'd think she'd hire villains who always work as mercs for hire like Batroc or Taskmaster. At any rate, I've enjoyed H4H more than ANNIHILATORS for a while, so I'm aboard for this.
- T-Bolts #167 seems to suggest that the escapees will remain lost in time while the modern team hunts them. Interesting.
- Whatever happens in LEGION OF MONSTERS has to serve Elsa Bloodstone better as a character than NEXTWAVE did.
- The cover to WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #3 is hilarious.
- That UNTOLD TALES OF SPIDER-MAN OMNIBUS is a long overdue collection of one of the better comic series of the late 90's, at a time when John Bryne's CHAPTER ONE tanked, Ultimate wasn't in the planning phases, Marvel was in the red and ASM was gasping after the end of the Clone Saga. The last trade collection of it that I recall was some collection of the first 6-10 issues that was long out of print. $100 is a bit much, but it is the ENTIRE run of Busiek's material. This is where Batwing from AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE came from, as well as Scorcher, who Bendis seems to love using (likely because he's one of the rare Spidey villains who isn't white and also isn't stereotypical, like Hypno-Hustler). Sadly, the armored thief Commandra never caught on; Spidey always did have too few female rogues.
