I need some advice here....

Since I quit my job last november (door-to-door salesman) I've, once again, had trouble finding a new job. Last week my mom (who I live with unfournately) told me that she was moving out of the house on April 30th; the house has been on the market since Dec. but I didn't know she was just going to leave out suddenly. I've been so busy thinking about job searching that I never thought about where I was going to live.

I don't want to move in with family, and I can't stay with a friend. I'm not the type of person to ask for help because I like to do things on my own. My best friend told me that he'd help me out anyway, he asked people if they could help out or suggest anything; but no one has been helpful.

The only suggestion has been that maybe I should join the military, like the Air Force. I have much respect for anyone who joins but I don't think it's for me especially being that I don't want to go to war in Iraq; but at the same time I'm having trouble with job hunting and maybe my degree can come in hardly some how.

So what I'm asking is, should I continue with my job hunt and just keep going or should I just look into joining the military (Air Force) instead?

Frankly, move in with family and keep job hunting. You should probably pay closer attention to your apperance (are you looking professional when you're out on that job hunt?) and your preparedness (are you carrying multiple copies of your resume and pens and paper with you?).

However, I'm anti-military and bound to be biased against anything that puts someone in the line of fire.

Honestly it is very difficult to give any type of advice without knowing certain particulars such as what the labour market offers in your area, what your aspirations are and what your qualifications/capabilities are.

Maybe the army is your best option but that would probably be at a low level given that if you have the capability to succeed there, you should have the same to succeed at getting a good job.

One thing to note, however, is that recruiters tend to look at long unemployment periods with very big disfavour.

Also, you should caveat everything I say by noting that my own background was working in Mergers&Acquisitions for large investment banks and then in fund management, so my advice might not be appropriate relative to your own circumstances.

my resume is so blank. but yeah i'll move in with family ad keep job hunting. something is bound to turn up. what kind of degree do you have?

i would also suggest you look for something that is'nt in your area of specialization. like a manager at some workplace, or whatever.

I have a degree in graphic design, but it's only an associate's. I've looked for jobs in other places (bookstores, computer stores, etc.) but for some reason no one will hired me, I usually don't even get an interview.

I'm wondering if I'm overqualified for some of these jobs.

Military recruiters will sign up anyone with a heartbeat and no disqualifying disabilities, dude. They have quotas to make and are having a hard time meeting the current demand for troops. I don't think being unemployed is going to be a deterrent for them.

I do agree that striving towards your aspirations is the best thing to do, and that if you can succeed in the military then you could have just as easily been successful in the free market.

How old are you? If you're over 21, don't you think its time to stand on your feet? Other than that, its up to you. We can't make a decision like that for you.

trying going to magazine publications and newspaper offices. im sure you can get a job as a graphics designer. or you can go look for jobs at a university. Just put yourself out there more, use job search engines like career builder, or monster search.

how is he going to do that without a job? i'll be hitting 22 soon................:(

It's not that I don't want to work, because I do; I just don't understand why I'm not being hired as much as I put myself out there.

Plus, I'm doing it without having a car.

I was having trouble out of college finding a job. I was some paperwork away from going into the Coast Guard as an Officer. Since I had a degree it was easy. A shortened boot camp and I would have come out as a Lieutenant JG.

I have a buddy who did a stint in the Coast Guard as an Officer. He loved it. He got to spend time in Alaska, in the Gulf of Mexico, San Diego and on the Oregon Coast. Of all the military options, that's the only one I'd even give consideration to myself if it came down to join up or starve and be homeless.

Have you looked for jobs further away. If there aren't any in your city/town perhaps you should look in other citys.
