MARK FELT, WATERGATE'S 'DEEP THROAT', DIES AT 95
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081219/ap_on_re_us/obit_felt

W. Mark Felt, the former FBI second-in-command who revealed himself as "Deep Throat" 30 years after he helped The Washington Post unravel the Watergate scandal, has died. He was 95.

Felt died Thursday at a hospice near his home in Santa Rosa after suffering from congestive heart failure for several months, said family friend John D. O'Connor, who wrote a Vanity Fair article disclosing Felt's secret in 2005.

The shadowy central figure in one of the most gripping political dramas of the 20th century, Felt insisted his alter ego be kept secret when he leaked damaging information to Post reporter Bob Woodward.

The scandal led to President Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974, two years after the break-in at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee in the Watergate office building in Washington.

While some — including Nixon and his aides — speculated that Felt was Deep Throat, he steadfastly denied the accusations until finally coming forward in May 2005.

"I'm the guy they used to call Deep Throat," Felt told O'Connor for the Vanity Fair article, creating a whirlwind of attention. Weakened by a stroke, he wasn't doing much talking — he merely waved to the media from the front door of his daughter's Santa Rosa home.

Critics, including those who went to prison for the Watergate scandal, called him a traitor for betraying the commander in chief. Supporters hailed him as a hero for blowing the whistle on a corrupt administration trying to cover up attempts to sabotage opponents.

No one seems to care? :(

This man was an American hero and I happily give this thread a bump.

It's not that we don't care, it's just that Felt was old and expected to die anyway. That's why he revealed himself as the source in the first place, or at least that's what I've read.

I remember when he revealed himself a couple if years ago and how funny it was to hear professional news journalists say "deep throat" on tv.

Yup. That's what was reported when he revealed himself.

Imagine how funny it was in the 1970s as porn was becoming such a big industry. :o

How did I miss this thread?

Felt is no hero. He did nothing noble here because his intentions were not that of justice but of revenge. Felt didn't give a damn whether Nixon broke any laws or not, he was pissed he wasn't FBI Director.

So Felt just should have remained quiet while Nixon went out of his way to ruin his opponents?

I don't think SNR is saying that he should have remained quiet. He's just saying that there wasn't really anything noble about his actions (or, more importantly, his intentions).

I don't know how much of that is based in truth and how much is based in bias, though. I'm just saying that that isn't quite the point.

I am not criticizing Felt's actions - I am criticizing his motives. To paint him as a hero is foolsih, again this guy wasn't doing it for the greater good - he was doing it to settle a grudge.

If a guy breaks into the house and kills a guy because he wants the guys TV, and the victim turns out to have a garage full of illegal alien sex slaves, that doesn't make the thief a hero.

I was just wondering if you felt his actions were merited. My opinion is that the actions were heroic; his motives were not. Still, he did a service to this country. Nixon is still one of my favorite presidents, but his corruption deserved to be exposed.

I have no problem with exposing the whole Watergate scandal, I am upset with the idiots who did it and tarnished the legacy of one of our greatest Presidents.

So...you're upset with Nixon? In the end, blaming anybody else is off the mark.

We all know that when the president does something, it's not illegal. It must be one of those hidden clauses in the Constitution us average laymen aren't able to read. It is perfectly acceptable for presidents to abuse their authority once in office.

That line must be right next to the clause which declares the United States a Christian nation.

Except that there was never any evidence Nixon ordered the break in's which started the entire ordeal. The fact that Nixon tried to cover it up after the fact does not insult my since of justice in the slightest. I think Nixon's biggest mistake was putting a guy like Liddy in a place of power.

Are you kidding me...............

No, go read a book.

Why would he cover it up?

Because when people associated with you get caught doing something they shouldn't be doing, you get punished as well. Again, no one I have ever read with any real knowledge of Watergate has charged that Nixon ordered the break in - if thats the case, then I stand with my opinion on the matter. If Nixon did order it, he deserves what he got.

...and just what the hell is a "since of justice?"

I have never claimed to be above the occasional type-o.

He lied....he is a liar.......tell me how he was one of the greats...also let me give you some advice, don't believe everything you read.

A politician that lied? Amazing.

If you limited the success or failure of a President based on if they lied, then your list would be limited to William Henry Harrison.

Nixon ended the war in Vietnam, brought home the POW's, ended the war in the Mideast, opened relations with China, started the first nuclear weapons reduction treaty, saved Eretz Israel's life, started the Environmental Protection Administration. The man was one of the most successful and effective Presidents ever.

Personally I think trying to cover up the Watergate breakins is less morally wrong than locking up innocent American citizens like FDR did, or instigate the Trail of Tears like Andrew Jackson, or being hypocritical on slaves (as well as many other important issues of the day) like Jefferson. Yet...these Presidents are treated like nobles and Nixon is a cartoon villain on Futurama. Its stupid and its unfair.

I completely agree with you. Nixon, his immoral activities aside, was a great president. I'm sure every politician ever has done what Tricky Dick did at some point, but Nixon managed to get caught because he wasn't careful and was paranoid and creepy as Hell.

Also, didn't William Henry Harrison make up some false story that he was of a poor, log cabin background when in fact he was really fairly affluent?

The story originated with, actually, with Martin Van Buren who tried to use that story to turn off votes from WHH. It backfired and WHH's campaign staff knew it so they ran with it.
