This was part of an interview that AICN had with Kal Penn about the SR dvd...

C: I have yet to see the deleted scenes on the DVD, so maybe this question would be answered by those, but was there a time when your character actually had lines?

KP: [Laughs] Yeah, here's what happened with that. The original script, the character's name is Stanford, and he had a subplot that's about 20-minutes long in the rough cut that I saw. Part of his plot was that he and Lex Luthor are in cahoots, and Stanford plants evidence in the Daily Planet that sends Superman into outer space for all those years. And that's why he leaves, because he thinks Krypton still exists.

Some of that is touched upon in the novel, I am not sure about the script, I can't remember.

Just picked up the Returns DVD. Something I've felt for a while now is that there was too much Lois and not enough Clark in Superman Returns. Lois's family problems should have been a subplot, not a main feature of the film.

Well, to my delight/sadness, the DVD featured a lot of deleted scenes of Clark on the farm. In the deleted scenes, he reads through old newspapers and sees how the world's gone to s**t and that his beloved Lois now hates him.

He decides to retire on his farm, the one place where things are still the same... only to discover his mother is dating someone. Things have changed!

Why did they decide to cut these?? In the film we have no real reason for his return to work. The DVD scenes really hammered in just how the world had changed, and pretty much left Clark with nowhere to go but Metropolis.

The scene where he discovers his mother is dating Ben is also really funny. It develops Superman's character more and makes his character arc of being accepted again much more powerful. I'd have much rather seen this scene than Lois doing the dishes and arguing with Richard while Superman spies on them. :csad:

This also added a lot more to the plot than Young Clark running around. Sure it was a nice looking sequence, but what did it add to the story?

I've only watched the first page of deleted scene's, but yeah all of them would have been nice if they were still in the movie. I really hope Singer does decide to do an extended edition some time in the future.

Those scenes were awesome, especially family photos, old newspapers and Are you two dating.

There was something great about Brandon seeing pictures of Glenn Ford as his father.

I liked the subtle reference when Martha said 'Even you can't stop the world from spinning' then he spun the baseball backwards.

Regardless if theres anyone to blame for these scenes getting shelved, its WB. They ordered the film be cut from 3 hrs to 2:30 pretty much last minute (which is totally stupid) believing viewing audiences couldnt sit through a 3 hour \S/ film.

Bryan painfully had to make these cuts. I know he really wanted to keep James Karen in the film.

If there was so much footage cut from the film they should have made a prequel mini-movie out of it. It could have drawn in more fans and created more hype.

No, it's Bryan. WB asked him to cut the film down, but he decided what to cut. Bryan decided to make the film more about Lois than about Clark.

Problem is alot of those scenes were necessary to the progression of the story, so they couldnt be cut.

from what I read he showed the full film to a bunch of people and made his cuts based on that

what about the original shirt rip and the closet?

Does that kid jumping around with the glasses on actually do or say anything in the deleted bits?

I have to say that that's one of the things I wanted something extra on instead of it being this throw away flashback sequence.

It isn't and theres a lot of other deleted scenes that aren't even on the dvd.Inspite of how much i like the movie the fact that they didn't release the full set of deleted scenes kind of pisses me off.The original comic book opening, the Stanford subplot scenes, Return to Krypton etc.

Heres a great review on the dvd incl. the deleted scenes.

I really wish they release an extended edition of the movie next year. Some really good stuff was left out and i'd like to see it, i think we all would.

Yeah it would have been good if they were able to keep that in the movie, but there isnt 20 mins worth of footage in the theatrical cut that they could have cut instead.

I know, its shame they couldnt release the full cut straight away, but i can understand WB wanting a shorter running time in the summer. You couldnt have a 3 hour summer movie.

And audiences could barely muster up enough attention span to sit through cut down Returns
