Johnny Depp is negotiations to star in Lionsgate's Mortdecai, an adaptation of "The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery" by Kyril Bonfiglioli, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Depp will be reuniting with Secret Window writer/director David Koepp on the project. Koepp will direct the movie from a script he wrote, working off an original draft by Eric Aronson.

According to the trade, Depp will star as Charles Mortdecai, a debonair art dealer and part time rogue who “must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.”

sounds interesting

i really like Johnny Depp and the guy is one hell of an actor, but he seriously needs to distance himself from Disney and Burton

good thing his upcoming projects are unrelated to those two

He's getting too comfortable with those two. Nothing comes off as exciting or refreshing anymore. Just weird facial tics and layers of make-up.

Filming has started. Nice cast too: http://www.hitfix.com/news/johnny-d...i-with-gwyneth-paltrow-ewan-mcgregor-and-more

Johnny Depp begins filming 'Mortdecai' with Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, and more
David Koepp directing this movie based on the book trilogy

Johnny Depp is currently in London where his newest film, "Mortdecai," has just begun principal photography. It is an action comedy based on the book trilogy by Kyril Bonfiglioli and is being directed by David Koepp with a script from Eric Aronson. The film is the first being produced in a deal between Lionsgate and OddLot Entertainment.

Beyond just starring in the film, Depp is serving as a producer on "Mortdecai" as well. As for his co-stars, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Paul Bettany and Olivia Munn are all set to appear alongside the "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor.

The press release from Lionsgate announcing the start of production also offers up the following synopsis for the film: "Juggling some angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part time rogue Charlie Mortdecai (Depp) must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold."

What do you think? Do you see Depp as a "debonair art dealer and part time rogue," or just generally debonair and roguish?

I'm still curious about this. In the end, I still think Depp is awesome despite some of his more recent missteps.

Agree, i tend to give him the benefit of the doubt because he's a great actor (exception was The Tourist cause i cant stand Jolie lol). This one sounds like fun :yay:

The Tourist was the movie he's done in recent memory. Just a joyless, confusing romp.

BTW, Johnny went blond for the role (with Sir Christopher Lee at an event):

Beat me to it. That's also so unnatural on top of it.

Which makes me extra glad i havent seen it yet :woot:

He looks very weird as a blond that's for sure :hehe:

I hope Paul Bettany plays the "impossibly leggy wife."

The Tourist wasn't that bad, just bland. Depp looks odd with that hair but then again he specializes in odd. The premise sounds fun, I am interested to see what tone Koepp goes for.

so who's playing his wife? Munn or Paltrow?

Same here. Actually I enjoyed The Lone Ranger despite its flaws.

IMO, this seems like the exact type of film that Depp needs to reclaim some credibility (then again, I thought the same of the Rum Diary).

Well instead of looking 20 years younger, now he looker 10 years younger. He still wins.

Ewan and Gwyneth film in London, both looking very classy: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbi...new-film-Mortdecai-South-Bank-restaurant.html
Making a meal of it: Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor shoot scenes for new film Mortdecai in South Bank restaurant

Their leading co-star Johnny Depp was already spotted filming scenes for action/crime film Mortdecai in London's last week.

And now it was Gwyneth Paltrow, 41, and Ewan McGregor's, 42, turn to follow suit as they got to work shooting their initial scenes in a restaurant on London's South Bank on Friday.

The pair, both smartly dressed, looked to be discussing serious business when they met at a dinner table, with only a bottle of water for sustenance.

The big-screen adaptation of the popular Mortdecai book series by the late British author Kril Bonfiglioli tells the story of art dealer, Charles Mortdecai, played by Johnny Depp, who is on the search for a stolen painting rumored to contain a secret code that gains access to hidden Nazi gold.

Mortdecai sees the enigmatic actor reunite with director David Koepp some nine-years after they worked together on 2004 movie Secret Window.

The pair will no doubt be hoping the forthcoming film fares better than their previous collaboration, which made a minor impact at the box office by recouping its $40,000,000 budget, but received lukewarm responses from critics.

Whilst on set, Gwyneth and Ewan were even treated to a quick hair and make-up touch-up whilst sitting at the table.

Mum-of-two, Gwyneth, looked elegant in a ruffle cream blouse, belted trousers finished off with a pearl necklace.

Her blonde locks were perfectly quaffed and her make-up was kept simple with pink lipstick and brown eyeliner.

McGregor appeared similarly refined, dressed in a black suit with his brunette locks slicked back into a gentleman-like style.

It appears the pair have been in the capital for a few days shooting scenes, as on Tuesday Ewan tweeted: 'Beautiful blue skied day here in London. Shooting Mortdecai in Pinewood. Having a laugh.'

While plot details are sketchy, and it has yet to be revealed what characters Paltrow and McGregor are to play, the film is thought to be based on the final Mortdecai novel – The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery, a posthumous novel completed by satirist Craig Brown after the author’s death.

Described as ‘an amoral Bertie Wooster with psychopathic tendencies,’ art dealer Charlie will be on the hunt for a painting that contains a code revealing the location of hidden Nazi treasure.

McGregor appeared recently starred in Jack the Giant Slayer and has the star-studded August: Osage County due out in the UK in January.

He’s now shooting Gavin O’Connor’s Jane Got a Gun with Natalie Portman and Joel Edgerton.

Paltrow has recently starred as Pepper Potts in Iron Man 3 and the indie dramedy Thanks for Sharing, which received poor ticket sales.

Gwyneth, who now apparently encourages Apple, nine, and seven-year-old Moses to only speak in Spanish, has not been too popular with the public after poor ticket sales and a feud with Vanity Fair.

And according to Radar Online Gwyneth is being urged to do something ‘big’ like ‘gain weight for a Bridget Jones style film role’ to get the public back on her side.
