All three of those candidates have great and bad characteristics that would make them the Joker.

Depp - GOOD - Amazing actor, would just absorb the role, sink into it.
BAD - Too famous of a name, probably would outshadow Christan, sorry to say.
I think Depp is the best choice is WB wants some big $$$.

Weaving - GOOD - Not as well known as Depp, and is great actor, and can jump into the role. (See: V For Vendetta, Matrix, LOTR)
BAD - He was in a comic movie already (V)

Bettany - GOOD - The least well known out of the three. Great actor, and would be a good Joker.
BAD - He just doesn't look lanky enough to me. In the pics I've seen on the boards, he looks kinda big for the Joker.

I think these 3 should really be considered by Nolan and WB. If Depp is a candidate, and he wants it, GIVE IT TO HIM.

Plus, "Batman II" would be a great title to the movie.

Depp is also my first choice, but i know that he isn't going to be the Joker.

so my vote goes to Hulme, who is an unknown, and looks more like the comic book joker than any of the 3 actors mentioned.

they are all good actors, and i would be thrilled with any of them

but lets be serious for a second...

to big of a name means ****, when that name is Johnney Depp...if Johnney Depp is infact interested they are fools if they decided to go in another direction...Depp is arguabley the best actor in the past 10 years, if not hands down the best, just like if they could somehow get DeNiro, or Pacino in the movie..who cares if they are two big of a name, they are huge names for a reason, because they are fantastic

a big name actor would bug me if they where going to go with like Heath Ledger or something where no way do i wanna see that...But Johnny Depp is someone you absoloutley need associated with your movie

I agree with the Depp comment. Yes he is a big name, but he made his name on his acting laurels, not just on a pretty face.

Also, I'm pretty shocked that this thread hasn't been hounded by Hulme fans for the creator not adding him into the mix...

Depp doesn't really look like the Joker at all, if you ask me. I know looks aren't the most important thing, but I want this Joker to at least be tall and lanky. His face is also too round. I have yet to see a single good Johnny Depp manip, compared to dozens of great Bettany manips and one or two good Hulme manips.

I think if they go with Depp, we'll basically be getting another Nicholson: someone who doesn't really fit the Joker, but is just being chosen because he's a well known actor at the time.

Depp is however, IMO at least, much more of a chameleon than Nicholson ever was.

I think Bettany is every good an actor as anyone in that list - yes, I am saying Bettany is as good as Johnny Depp.

I say make movie history by casting all three as the Joker. They can each play the character in certain parts of the movie.

It would be kind of like the bullpen of movies.

I honestly don't think Depp is in the mix for the role anymore...

    Yeah, I know you were.

If we had been actually speaking my occasion specific sarcasm would have been evident, and --I like to think-- funny.

A few guys I would've at least liked to see screen tested for The Joker.

DJ Qualls apparently played quite a good criminal in Law and Order.
Michael Wincott- might be a bit old and short but his features remind me of TAS Joker and Conrad Veidt (a bit).

It is true that Bettany bulked up a bit for his more recent films...but he could easily pull a Bale and drop that weight. His natural body type is tall and lanky so...

    BETTANY, DAMNIT!

In terms of somebody being too big of a name, the same argument was made against Caine when we all wanted him for Alfred: "He's too well known, he'll overshadow Bale and that would be bad". It's a stupid argument. Good actors are good actors and you don't avoid casting a good actor because they would "overshadow" another good actor. You want the ideal, somebody who will give a good performance for their character rather than having them be there to make another performance look good.

Depp is just a tad more of a box office draw right now than Caine. Box office sure isn't a bad thing, but Depp is leagues beyond Caine in popularity right now.
