This thread is for the Paul Dini's run on Detective Comics. I'm doing this because 1) Its Paul Dini, known for BTAS. And 2) Since there will be a thread on the Batman & Son arc from the Batman title, might as well not forget this.

So here is the first review:

DETECTIVE COMICS #821

PLOT:
Gotham's wealthiest citizens find themselves victimized by the mysterious new villain Facade. Operating with a gang trained to pass as members of the cities' elite, the masked mastermind's crimes baffle the police and leave members of Gotham society fearing for their lives. It's up to Batman to use a "facade" of his own, that of socialite Bruce Wayne, in order to bait the villain's underlings and discover the true identity of their elusive leader.

REVIEW:

Lets start with a "wow" for this issue. Paul Dini has written something that gives us a detective mystery feeling page by page, and above all to all DCAU fans; an issue that feels like its an episode of Batman: The Animated Series. Even the text in the boxes of the panels are written like the letters from the BTAS logo. Including the talk between Batman & Robin, Batman & Gordon, Bruce and Alfred, even the final lines of the issue have all these feelings from the show. The only thing that doesn't have that feeling, from Dini's writing, are those boxes that sound like the Dini/Ross book: BATMAN: WAR ON CRIME.

At first I thought that would be it for the review, but I decided that I should talk about the new villian. Simiply because he is NEW. The villian, Facade, is pretty weird. He must have an obsession for dummies as he collects them. He must have this thing for faceless people as he also wears a mask that covers his face so you can't see inside and reflects everything. A villain that was a nobody that wanted to be a somebody and knew how to get that.

Overall; this was nice. Now, this isn't an arc at all. At first I thought it was but it seems it isn't. The next issue is different that this. The only thing these issues of Detective Comics share is the cover by Simone Bianchi. I could be wrong if the next issue picks up where this left off, which the next ones don't have anything that seem to come from this issue. And that the title doesn't have Part 1 next to it. So this is one story issue. The next will be new and un-connected to this one.

RATING: 9/10

Yeah this book was quite awesome, I'm pretty sure that his run is gonna be all one-shots.

Oh and really liked the new villain.

as long as they dont bring in elements from BTAS or BB(Batman Beyond) i'm fine.

Wouldn't this discussion fall under the Batman OYL thread?:

At an rate, good review Binker. I've been looking forward to Dini's run.

These Dini written issues, including the arc on Batman, aren't really OYL since the Face The Face arc was OYL and thats done. So this is now after OYL and "back to normal". I hope I got this right. I hope I'M even right.

Either way, I think it deserves its own topic.

Umm I think it's still OYL. Batman was gone for a year so how could this not be OYL.

I felt it deserved its own thread.

From now on, we will deal with every single Batman story in the Batman OYL later thread, since it's always gonna be One Year Later?

Bloody brilliant.

Where is it thogh?

Isn't Batman OYL suppose to be in this section?

I think they deleted that one instead of this one.

you could, and if you wanted individual story threads you could go to the batman forums:o

Or we can just wait until a year in Batman continutity has passed. Because we wouldn't be posting in the OYL thread when the story is really TYL

Why does everyone think OYL is over just because the first arcs are done? OYL isnt over until 52 finishes IMO.

Because they do. Many think the first arc, that actually had the OYL logo on the cover, is OYL. And once its over, so is OYL.

The OYL logo was off most titles after the first issue.

Damn them. I'm not venturing over to the Batman boards. They are far too annoying.

I hated the way Bruce Wayne actually looked. Most of the time he had this mustache thing going, made him look like a sailor.

He didnt have a mustache the whole issue.

I thought the same thing. 52 is stretching the entire year, to fill in that missing year gap.

I figured that OYL would also be stretching the entire year along with 52. And once 52 came to an end then things would sort of be normalized once again. A lot of the writers involved with 52 are also being involved with many of the DC core titles. Like Grant Morrison for instance.

I guess maybe we're wrong?

But Detective Comics # 821 was really good. The artwork was decent, though I didn't care too much for those big white marks to show Batman connecting with his punches. It was rather cheesy and took away from the art. I hope they don't keep doing that! But the story was top notch. Good plot and definitely something I could see taking place in Gotham. Good to see Batman use his Bruce Wayne persona to nab the bad guys in this one.

The trophy wall with the masks was really cool. Disturbing. But cool.

Damn them. I'm not venturing over to the Batman boards. They are far too annoying.

Heh. Do you think by just going in there that you'll be infected with some kind of nanovirus that only people get going in the Batman Comics forum?

JH Williams is a god, he can have all the white punches he wants.

JH Williams' art was great. The story really did feel like it was ripped straight from a B:TAS script. The new villain was interesting, too. Good job all around.

I was very pleased with the first issue by Dini and Williams.

The art was tremendous and so was the story. Its a very exciting time to be reading Detective Comics. And soon... Morrison and Kubert on BATMAN.
