Devil’s Third Is Coming Exclusively To Wii U. June 10, 2014 . 10:08am

Devil’s Third, the next game from former Ninja Gaiden director Tomonobu Itagaki, is a Wii U exclusive.

Devil’s Third, the next game from former Ninja Gaiden director Tomonobu Itagaki, is a Wii U exclusive, IGN reported this morning.

The game is a mix of melee combat and first-person shooting.

Nintendo “really understood my vision,” Itagaki told IGN, “so I felt I really had to work with them.”

Makes sense. Itagaki had to mortgage his house just to keep it going, and Nintendo needs more third party support. This is win-win.

Not too crazy about the main characters design, but the gameplay does look fun.

A regular cover shooter plus some melee with little to no impact? What was Itagaki thinking?

Looks violent and fun, but the graphics look last gen to me.

I'm surprise to see so much **** being thrown at this. I admit, the trailer doesn't look great, but this guy developed God tier games with Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Gaiden, and Ninja Gaiden II. It says a lot about how much he contributed too when the franchise went to crap after he left. I'll look forward to anything he has.

Itagaki explains the Devil’s Third revival on Wii U.

One of the most surprising announcements at this year’s E3 was that Devil’s Third is coming exclusively to the Wii U. Developed by Tomonobu Itagaki and his team at Valhalla Game Studios, Devil’s Third was picked up by Nintendo after the demise of the game’s original publisher THQ.
In an interview with Joystiq, Itagaki explains how this all came about and what to expect from the long-in-development action game. “I’m not really sure if it would have been possible ten years ago to be honest, but I’ve had a long relationship with Nintendo going back to the Nintendo and Super Nintendo. Once I went independent, I definitely went over to Nintendo to say hello.”
Devil’s Third takes place in an alternate timeline of the United States in which all technology was destroyed. A civil war has since broken out, and several militias are trying to gain the most territory. While Itagaki is most known for his action and fighting games like Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive, Devil’s Third is primarily a third-person shooter, albeit with some extensive melee combat. Itagaki explains, “I prefer to find them in a big avenue. That’s why I tried to pick the most major genre I could think of, the modern shooter. That’s what led me to make Devil’s Third
Devil’s Third is currently set for release on Wii U, but there is currently no release date. In the meantime, check out this teaser trailer for the game from E3 2014.

Devil’s Third Designer Wants The Game To Have Unique Online Elements. July 23, 2014 . 8:29am

Tomonobu Itagaki speaks with Famitsu about Devil’s Third.
[YT]V9PEEu7B7s8[/YT]

During E3, Nintendo and Valhalla Studios announced that Devil’s Third, a game being led by former head of Team Ninja, Tomonobu Itagaki, will be a Wii U-exclusive title. Itagaki recently shared more about the game in this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine. [Thanks, Hachima.]

When asked about Nintendo, who will publish Devil’s Third, Itagaki stated that Nintendo loves games more than anyone. Not only that, but they love to play. Being able to make this game with Nintendo is what he sees as a huge opportunity.

He is then asked if Devil’s Third will have some sort of special elements on the Wii U.

Itagaki replies: “It is our policy to make full use of the hardware’s characteristics. I’m currently thinking along the lines of having something other than having you press down on the Wii U GamePad, and something that will make you say, ‘Oh, I see!’”

According to Famitsu, Itagaki previously stated that he would like to include elements we’ve yet to see in an online multiplayer game. While we still don’t know what they are, Itagaki mentions that the game takes place in North America, where you’ll participate in a campaign to fight until you’re the last one standing.

At first, you’ll start out as a simple citizen with weapons like iron pipes and regular pistols, but as the civil war breaks out, you’ll be able to continue fighting as a lone wolf or build your own organization to fight alongside.

Devil’s Third will have up to 16 players for its online mode, and Itagaki also mentioned that they’ll continue building on it after the game is released.

So far, Devil’s Third has yet to get a release window. During E3, Nintendo featured the game on their Treehouse Live stream, with a good deal of in-game footage of the work-in-progress title. You can watch this above.

Development update on Devil’s Third
Published 4 hours ago. 35 comments.

Scale of story mode greater than Ninja Gaiden, Itagaki says.
Devils-Third_11-22-14.jpg

Devil’s Third creator Tomonobu Itagaki took to Facebook to provide a development update on Devil’s Third, which has been silent since its E3 re-reveal.
An English version of Itagaki’s Japanese text was posted, however, we’ve modified it just a tad for better readability. Get the update below.
I recently received lots of questions about Devil’s Third from my fans.
I’d like to speak about development status of Devil’s Third in my own words, to the extent that I am allowed.

  1. Devil’s Third is a strong fusion between action games and shooters.
  2. Devil’s Third development is going smoothly. In other words, we finished editing the closing movie the other day.
  3. Devil’s Third will be released next year. Nintendo has already announced this in their press release.
  4. The scale of Devil’s Third‘s story mode is greater than that of Ninja Gaiden.
  5. Devil’s Third demolishes the standard of past console games in online multiplayer.
  6. Almost all specifications I wanted to do were implemented. I got an up-close look at the great forerunners Call of Duty, Battlefield, Gears of War, and my beloved Halo. On that basis, we added completely new level of playability that only we can create.
  7. Anyone can enjoy this game; from casual gamers to hard-core gamers. Let me put it this way. You guys can throw a fun party, or can kill each other in realistic war. You can play your heart out.
  8. This is all I can disclose to you today. I can’t tell you when the war will begin. It’s the way the world goes. I really want to tell you more, my fans waiting with crushing frustration.
It’s rough on a man!
Well, be patient just a little longer. Don’t miss it!
Devil’s Third will launch for Wii U in 2015.

Devil’s Third Framerate And Resolution Still Being Worked Out. December 16, 2014 . 3:01pm

Tomonobu Itagaki shares a few more tidbits on his third-person shooter via Facebook.

After he left Team Ninja, Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu Itagaki began work on a third-person shooter titled Devil’s Third. The game is being published by Nintendo and will be released for the Wii U sometime in 2015. Of late, Itagaki has been using his personal Facebook to reach out to fans of the shooter, and recently, he shared a few more tidbits of information with them.

When asked what the title “Devil’s Third” means, Itagaki said it has to do with music. Itagaki could be referring to a “tritone,” a musical interval composed of three whole tunes or six half tones. This is colloquially sometimes referred to as “The Devil’s Interval,” but whether or not this is what he was referring to remains to be seen.

When asked if Devil’s Third will feature both a single and multiplayer campaign, Itagaki’s reply was as follows:

“We made this game for single play (campaign) and online online multiplay gamers. ‘Cuz I know I have to respond to expectations by both gamers. So, in fact, we invested double amount of resources than general development in this industry, to accomplish to develop this game. I can’t show you specific length of single play mode, ‘cuz we’re still tuning this game. But you can estimate the total length of single play mode, by my saying above.”
Itagaki was also asked what framerate and resolution the game will run at, to which he replied that the game’s specs are still being worked out.

Tomonobu Itagaki Says He Went All Out On Devil’s Third. December 30, 2014 . 3:31pm

Itagaki also mentioned the singleplayer aspect of the game.

Former Tecmo developer Tomonobu Itagaki has been working on Devil’s Third for quite a while since starting Valhalla Game Studios, and the game is planned for release in 2015. Itagaki recently shared his excitement in an end-of-year feature with 4Gamer.

“It looks like Devil’s Third for Wii U is just about done. It’s been two years spent on designs, and four, six years of development,” Itagaki said. “We’ve really kept all of you fans waiting, but for our first title since going independent, it wouldn’t be fun if we released a small game, so [Devil’s Third] is the result of making something while going all out.”

Itagaki also mentioned the singleplayer aspect of the game, although Devil’s Third’s appeal is supposed to be the multiplayer mode.

“The single player is made to be like the action games of yesteryear,” he stated. “And the online competitive multiplayer mode was designed on a scale that will make you go ‘this much already?!’ The release date announcement will still take a little longer, but let’s play together when it releases. It’s loads of fun!!”

Update with a translation from Siliconera

Devil’s Third Will Release In Japan On August 4th. June 9, 2015 . 11:30pm

Tomonobu Itagaki starts out with an introduction in the video, and announces that the game that has been in development for a long while, will finally release in Japan on August 4, 2015, and he’s looking forward to being able to play with the rest of the fans.

After leaving Tecmo, Tomonobu Itagaki has been working on Devil’s Third for a good while since starting up Valhalla Game Studios. He shares another look at the game and all of its main features in a recent video.

Itagaki starts out with an introduction in the video, and announces that the game, which has been in development for a long while, will finally release in Japan on August 4, 2015, and he’s looking forward to being able to play with fans.

We then get a look at some gameplay footage at 1:42 as Itagaki explains how simply making a shooter wouldn’t be fun, so the game has melee action that adds to the shooter, but without forgetting anything that a proper shooter game needs.

At 3:12, they show a little more of the single-player game. The protagonist is named Ivan the Terrible, and he was actually taught an impressive amount of ninjutsu from around the world for a terrorist organization. After a certain incident, he was then arrested by NATO; however, over time, they decided to get his help fight against his former terrorist allies.

Next, we get to see some of the multiplayer action at 5:00. Itagaki explains that the online multiplayer tells the story of what happened after Ivan originally lost. In this mode, you’ll be part of different clans as they fought against each other in cross-combat style.

Not everything about Devil’s Third will be about shooting and killing, as there will be some elements that involve leaving groups and betraying, as it won’t simply be about groups fighting against each other. As Itagaki put it, groups that only know how to fight aren’t what he considers the smartest groups, so there will be some sort of politics to it, too.

Devil’s Third Maker, Valhalla Games Studios, Is Hiring For A New Project. June 22, 2015 . 5:45pm

Devil’s Third developers Valhalla Games Studios posted new job listings searching for experienced game developers, specifically asking for those who are familiar with Unreal Engine.

Devil’s Third developers Valhalla Games Studios posted new job listings searching for experienced game developers, specifically asking for those who are familiar with Unreal Engine. Since development on Devil’s Third has wrapped up, it seems like Valhalla Games is gearing up to start a new project.

It’s been nearly five years since Devil’s Third was announced. The game was originally going to be published by the late THQ (Darksiders, Darksiders II), but the project underwent a major development overhaul after having to switch from the Darksiders II engine to the Unreal 3 engine following THQ’s closure in 2013.

Nintendo plucked the title from its grave and agreed to publish it, but the title has hardly been mentioned by Nintendo of America other than showing the game during their digital event at E3 2014. Nintendo of Japan will release the game on August 4. A European release is slated for August 28.

Valhalla Games Studios was founded by Tomonobu Itagaki, who left Tecmo in 2008. The studio was staffed with former members of Team Ninja who followed in Itagaki’s footsteps in 2009.

Wii U
Report: Nintendo won’t release Devil’s Third in North America, but another publisher will
Published 5 hours ago. 36 comments.

NIS America or XSEED to the rescue?

Devils-Third-NoA-Rumor.jpg

Nintendo won’t publish Devil’s Third, its Wii U-exclusive from Ninja Gaiden director Tomonobu Itagaki, in North America, according to an Unseen64 video report claiming the publisher is “purposefully distancing themselves from the game.”
“Nintendo of America has lost faith in [Devil’s Third],” the video states.
“Nintendo of America has no intention of publishing the game in the US. That is why we never saw it on [Nintendo’s E3 event] Treehouse Live this year and that is why it has been removed from the eShop.”
The video adds that early impressions from European reviewers indicate that the game’s “incredibly inconsistent frame-rate” and “less than sub-par” visuals make up a title that “just isn’t very good.”
However, according to a Siliconera report, the game will be released in North America by a separate publisher—one that readers of its website should be very familiar with. On that note, we’d guess either NIS America or XSEED Games.
Devil’s Third is due out in Europe on August 28 and in Japan on August 4.

Devil’s Third Creator Comes Out In The Game’s Defense. July 17, 2015 . 6:04am

“It seems that the world is in disorder,” says Tomonobu Itagaki.

Devil’s Third hasn’t been received well. We aren’t going to link to any critique of the game here, but suffice to say that Google is your friend, and if your Google-fu is in order, you’re going to read some not-so-great things about the game. In light of the reception, the game’s creator, Tomonobu Itagaki, has come out in its defence. Itagaki posted the following message to his Facebook:
[Dear media guys and gamers]
It seems that the world is in disorder…no way. I feel that the informations on Devil’s Third are tangled.
So I decided to tell you guys about the Specifications and recommended playing devices best suited for Devil’s Third, plus useful infomation for you guys.
I felt the time has come for me to talk about.

[About the specifications of Devil's Third]
Frame rate: 30fps.
*note: I promise you can fully enjoy this MASSIVE shooter with 30 fps.
Split Screen: This game don’t have split screen feature for both offline and online play. ‘Cuz I used all the power of Wii U for single player. That was tough tradeoff for me. Plz understand.
Voice chat: We don’t equip voice chat feature. ‘Cuz we had maxed out its bandwidth to achieve online play by 16 users.

Yo Guys,
Don’t disappoint, and don’t be negative. I promise the wide/deep/brandnew playability for you guys today [sunglasses emoticon]
[Recommended Playing Devices]

Wii U of course [smile emoticon]
TV set.
PRO contoroller.
USB keyboard.
Wired Internet.
Thanks for your constant support for Devil’s Third.
Let’s make the future together!

Devil’s Third is published by Nintendo in Europe for the Wii U. Details of the game’s North American release are still pending.

Devil’s Third will launch for Wii U via retail and digitally via the Nintendo eShop in the Americas in Q4 2015, Nintendo announced. Contrary to previous reports, it will be published by Nintendo.

The over-the-top, third-person action shooter combines modern military weaponry with ninja-style swordplay and melee combat.

Additionally, a PC version of the game, tentatively titled Devil’s Third Online, is also in development. While the Wii U version will feature a full multiplayer mode, as well as a single-player mode, the “free-to-start” PC version will offer a multiplayer-only experience tailored to PC. The game service will run from September 2015 onward in various regions around the world following the release of the Wii U version in each region. In consideration of cultural characteristics in each region, the PC version’s content is being optimized via co-development with local publishers.
