Exclusive:
In hopes of kickstarting its newest genre franchise, Screen Gems has purchased feature film rights to vidgame publisher Capcom's hit series "Devil May Cry."Kyle Ward has been hired to pen the script, which revolves around the character of Dante, who avenges his mother's murder by killing off demons.
Franchise was originally developed as the third installment of the "Resident Evil" games -- another Capcom property. However, once the game's design wound up veering too far from "Resident Evil's" style, Capcom decided to launch the title as an original property. "Devil" has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.
Screen Gems' "Resident Evil" franchise became a global B.O. hit for the genre label, with more than $580 million in worldwide grosses collectively. "Devil" represents the next potential vidgame franchise adaptation for Screen Gems. There since has been five games in the series, with the latest, produced by Ninja Theory as a reboot, featuring a younger version of the Dante character.
Over the years, Capcom has been eager to exploit "Devil May Cry" across other platforms including comicbooks, novels, an anime series and collectible statues and action figures. Digital Development Management brokered the deal on behalf of Capcom.
Ward recently penned the script for Universal's upcoming "Fiasco Heights." He is repped by CAA

And so it begins. DMC is one of my favorite game series of all time. If done right, this movie could be wicked fun. Keep the action insanely stylish and awesome and Dante's dialog cheesey and hilarious in the ways of Bruce Campbell's Ash from Army of Darkness and you can freaking count me in!

I'm very excited to see this develop and I really hope the tone of the movie doesn't take itself too seriously.

problem is the story is'nt very good you just go around killing demons and looking bad ass in the process.

the gameplay is what is so great about the games

Yeah, there isn't a whole lot of story to the franchise, but it has a solid base. Half-demon guy becomes a mercenary who usually takes on cases of a supernatural and demoniacal nature. That's a decent enough vehicle to make a serviceable story for a fun action film, and has the potential to continue with a franchise.

We'll get a female chick named Maria played by a model to be the new main character, Dante won't come until the sequel.

Props goes to Vengeance for sharing this. :awesome:

Wouldn't this work better as anime made by Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Ninja Scroll/Wicked City/Highlander/Animatrix: World Record) than some big Americanized garbage that will play like an extended MTV music video?

With sonys track record with RE... im not looking forward to this in the least

Resident Evil (as with many video games) is an inferior attempt to emulate movies that already exist. If you took away what video games can do that movies can't, be interactive, you would have a pile of vomit left.

im talking bout the fact that RE the Movie hardly even kept in line with the VG

RE had good stories the movies raped them

DMC on the other hand does'nt have a great storyline

and yet wit RE which had a great story they stillmanaged the create all these new and useless characters...just imagine what they do with DMC

Dante better have white hair and not look like the recent "revamped" version.:cmad:

I make that my words.
Can hardly see it being like that, though. I think it's too good to be true, but we'll see.

They better not butcher this like the upcoming MKINO webisodes. Realism ftw!

I smell another prince of persia.
Great movie. And IMO possibly the best video game movie adaptation ever made next to Tomb Raider.

But Devil May Cry as a movie? I dunno....the games are fun but full of the craziness found in most Japanese games if you get what I mean. :p

Something tells me they're gonna go out of their way to add more story than what is really needed. The games themselves are known for the stylish action while the story kinda rides in the backseat. Screen Gems will find some sort of way to butcher the hell out of it. I would personally like to see them use the story from the first game and have Mundus as the main villain.

Agreed. I hope they get a good team behind this cause I hate the Resident Evil flicks. I would like to see a director from Japan take on the project and have the action actually look like the games style. I hope its just a straight out over the top action/horror flick.

Alot of opportunities here.

People need to keep things in perspective and not think in such polarizing ways. I for one glad that the series is being made. Think of it as an elsewhere series then. But to paint it as MIKINO is silly.

I doubt they'll listen to your wise advice, Def28. They'll go for the cheapest director they can get.
