DC COMICS

DETECTIVE COMICS #853 (NOTE PRICE) $3.99 - Hi there; it's been a while. And since I'll be getting Rucka's run, I guess this is now a semi-permanent addition to the list.

MARVEL COMICS

ASTONISHING X-MEN #29 $2.99 - I'll finish this arc, but I'm pretty sure I'm done with this series after that.
DAREDEVIL #118 $2.99 - Excellent; can't wait to see DD & Kingpin take on the Hand.
DARK REIGN ELEKTRA #2 (OF 5) DKR $3.99 - Speaking of which, nice complement.
FANTASTIC FORCE #1 (OF 5) $3.99 - Looks interesting.
GUARDIANS OF GALAXY #13 $2.99 - Be intersting to see the Guardians finally get involved.
INCREDIBLE HERCULES #128 DKR $2.99 - Standard 'best book on the market' disclaimer.
MIGHTY AVENGERS #24 DKR $2.99 - Still unsure about this book, but the ending twist to last issue means I'll definitely stick around for now.
THOR #601 $3.99 - Wow, three chronically late books on one week.
X-FORCE #14 XMW $2.99 - crossover has been decent so far.

Jeebus.

ASTONISHING X-MEN #29 $2.99
MIGHTY AVENGERS #24 DKR $2.99

Good week for the most part. X-Force, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Immortal Iron Fist have me excited, as they're three of my favorate titles per month. Avengers: The Initiative and New Avengers have been pretty good so I'm glad to see what comes next, Initiative moreso than New, which I'm still debating on dropping. I like it, but not for $4. I've already dropped all unneccessary mini's and oneshots due to the price hike, this may follow suit before long. As for Marvels: Eye of the Camera, I'm ready for it to be finished. It's a nice read but I think 4 issues at $4 a pop would have been more reasonable. I'll finish it out but it's a little reluctantly.

In the maybe section I have Astonishing X-Men and Mighty Avengers, two titles I'm debating on dropping without having fully come to the decision yet. The long delays of Astonishing since day one has ruined the title for me and made it feel pointless. Whedon started it and now Ellis is continuing the trend (or perhaps Bianchi). The story isn't enough to make me want to wait though, so I may get it, or I may just skim it and put it off for some other day. Mighty Avengers is a title I decided to give until the end of the first arc and I did that and I'm not overly impressed. However, if Stature, Vision, Hercules, and Amadeus Cho are still on board, I might continue. However, I'll probably skim the issue before deciding, or even put it off until a few more issues come out to get a better idea of where Slott is taking the story to see if I really want to get it. Chances are though, I won't be picking it up. Wouldn't mind dumping both of these to pick up the next trade for Invincible or Y The Last Man.

DYNAMO 5 #21 (continuing the tradition of D5 being solicted by Diamond for two weeks in a row, which usually means it will ship the later week. This Wednesday will basically be a one book week for me, then.)
INVINCIBLE #61
AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE #23 (Guess Ramos needed a month to catch up, as in March the only A:TI material was that "non-annual" drawn by Steve Uy that introduced Reptil)
GHOST RIDER #34 (the second-to-last issue before the series is can... uh, "put on hiatus" and replaced with a 6 issue, $3.99 a pop mini series wrapping up the Jason Aaron run. It might be more honest to just increase the price of the ongoing and allow it to last until issue #41, but Marvel is all about obfuscation these days)
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #13
IMMORTAL IRON FIST #25 (another "hiatus" title by the summer, to be replaced by $4 one shots of other Immortal Weapons)
INCREDIBLE HERCULES #128
KICK-ASS #6
MIGHTY AVENGERS #24
THOR #601 (apparently increasing the title to triple digit numbering is worth a triple digit price increase per issue)
WOLVERINE WEAPON X FILES

I am amazed at the backward strategy of making the debut issues of ongoings $4. A prudent course would be one that VERTIGO is now going; make your #1 issues CHEAPER to ENCOURAGE people to give the book a try. Of course, both FANTASTIC FORCE and SKRULL KILL KREW seem more like spin-off ideas mired in 2007, before the recession really hit. I doubt either will be much above average in quality, so a quick cash in may be prudent also. Having a spin-off series based on the Millar/Hitch run on FF with involvement from neither beyond some Hitch covers is equally stupid as that run has since shrunken to under 50k sales per issue; therefore, expecting a spin-off mini that is 33% higher in price to sell beyond, say, 28k at best at debut before tumbling to far lower by issue #5 is the sort of expectation that only company insiders trapped in "groupthink" can come up with. Considering SECRET INVASION ended a while ago, I see even less potential for SKRULL KILL KREW. These are products that seem almost insulting considering Joe Q insists that a price increase is of the dire importance right now all at once, yet has done nothing to slow down the glut of projects Marvel is printing, many of which no one who is not high on either drugs or their own petards can expect to sell decently. Maybe if Marvel wasn't still on a "spit out random stuff and hope it sticks" with many mini's and cut printing a bunch of them, prices could come down, say, a quarter or something. Yes, I know, everyone at Marvel comics would become penniless bums on the streets if comics were, heaven forbid, $3.75 instead of $3.99, but bare with me.

Beyond my own cynical commentary, it looks like a fine week, with a lot of books I like. Making up for two slow weeks with a good 11 titles at once. Just as predicted. Again, considering that the "hardcore" fan who spends $20 or over on comics a week is expected to bare the brunt of increased comic costs, could something be done to spread these books out, so there aren't weeks that are like $9, and then weeks where you spend over $30?

ASTONISHING X-MEN #29 $2.99(Why do I still buy this?)

Personally, I'm dropping it as of now. The art is terrible and as much as I like Ellis, his story here isn't all that great, and certainlynot worth the delays.

And I guarantee nothing is going to happen at the end that matters to the X-Men AT ALL. I've barely noticed Kitty's departure aside from Pete's stupid-ass tattoo :whatever:

BTW, I thought A:TI was being cancelled.

I don't see why. A:TI #22 sold just under 47k in 2/2009 (as in 46,932 copies). It's sales have fallen about 22% over the last half year, but it still is selling decently enough. Most books shouldn't have to worry about that until they sell below 20k without any sign of settling down. Considering it is the 4th Avengers ongoing title, it's outselling some of the B-List X-Men titles these days, such as WOLVERINE: ORIGINS, DEADPOOL, X-FACTOR, and CABLE.

It may have to change the title at some point for relevance, but I don't see why it would be canceled.

Besides, Marvel doesn't "cancel" ongoing titles anymore. They just "put them on hiatus" and replace them with overpriced mini's or one-shots for 6 months. :o

I just coulda sworn I saw "final issue" in a solicit somewhere.

And who you callin B-List, punk? :cmad:

I was only noting their sales in comparison to other X-Books. Hell, AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE in terms of sales is a B-List Avengers book. All three other Avengers ongoings outsell it (even if DARK AVENGERS just started, and A:TI is about to reach it's second year).

AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE has been solicted at least until June where issue #25 "changes the Initiative forever". If Marvel allowed ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR to linger until issue #50 or #60 despite far worse sales, I doubt they are in a rush to put this title on hiatus for a little while. Unless Gage left and no creative team was able to hop in.

Well that's good news, I've still been enjoying the book  Although we were promised more Taskmaster.

Taskmaster is on the cover of issue #25 along with The Hood.

Yeah, I wondering if the "big reveal" is that Taskmaster was somehow on Osborn's payroll all along and does something for Norman's favor. He's all about the paychecks, after all.
