I prefer FC, X2 and even X1 to DoFP.
DoFP to me was entertaining, but rather hollow and disposable, which is something I never could accuse X1 of being, despite its faults and dated-ness. It was so ruthlessly plot-driven that whatever character development it had felt mostly rushed and superficial, and by the end of the film I just felt disengaged from the characters I had loved in FC. Quicksilver and -that- sequence was the only genuinely inspired bit, but as brilliant as he was at the end of the day Quicksilver was a fun diversion rather than the heart of the movie. I also didn't care much for the reunion at the end, partly because I don't care for the "and then everyone lived happily through the magic of time travel" writing, and partly because it felt like a big fan-service moment rather than something organic that actually had something to do with the rest of the movie. Plus the movie was full of sloppy/convenient writing, which I can and do forgive - when a film has many other good things to offer. If not it's just more stuff for the gripe pile.
Part of the problem IMO was that unlike, say, X2 which had the solid foundation of X1 and picked up the characters just where it left them last, DoFP had the task of setting up not one but
two brand new settings, and the main characters whose personality/agenda/circumstances had changed drastically from when we saw them last. At least with young!Charles there was some kind of attempt at dealing with this, though still not all that well-done IMO, but Mystique and Magneto were so much worse off, and poor Beast could have been replaced with any other muscled mutant and it would have made no difference whatsoever. I'll admit that he looked much better than he did in FC, but that doesn't mean much when the character has stuff all to do.
It didn't come close to my reaction when he broke out of the prison in X2, which was alot more inventive. Even though lower in scale it was a much better display of threatening power.
I agree, I'm tired of Magneto lifting massive things at this point. It worked in FC because lifting that submarine was a big emotional moment and a big step for Erik in getting hold of his powers, but in DoFP it's just Magneto Magnetoing.
