For a time being, Alicia Silverstone was kind of a "It Girl" in Hollywood after appearing in a string of Aerosmith music videos and her breakthrough role in "Clueless". I remember hearing around the time "Clueless" came out, that Alicia came off like a young Meg Ryan or Goldie Hawn (I suppose in other words, the cute blonde girl, who can work well in fluffy comedies). Although I would suggest, that Alicia was really perhaps, more like the Molly Ringwald of the '90s (a popular teen movie actress, who seemed to evoke unfulfilled potential after outgrowing that period in her career). Alicia for a period, even had I believe, a three picture deal with Columbia worth $10 million (which didn't pan out as well as anticipated).

Joel Schumacher in company cast Alicia as Batgirl, in large part because at the time, she had a lot of momentum going for herself as a hot, up and coming actress (thus, getting a lot of young girls, who normally wouldn't be interested in Batman excited). I would argue that it was similar to them wanting to get Jim Carrey to play the Riddler (after appearing in a string of hits from 1994 like "Ace Ventura", "The Mask", and "Dumb & Dumber") . Had "Batman & Robin" been a success, then one could argue that Alicia Silverstone would've officially been "put on the map" (kind of like what happened with Sean Young had she been able to play Vicki Vale in the first Batman movie).

I would argue that "Batman & Robin" also had a detrimental effect on the careers of Uma Thurman (until she hooked up with Quetin Tarantino again to due the "Kill Bill" saga) and Chris O'Donnell, but that's another story. George Clooney seemed to help himself by publically acknowledging the movie's criticisms. Maybe the movie also had a negative effect on Arnold Schwarzengger because up until he did, "Terminator 3" (his last starring role before running for Governor of California), I don't believe any movie his post-"B&R" movies were very well received at the box office.

Yeah, sure... I mean, whats to argue? That turd of a movie was a career destroyer through and through... To this day, i hear Clooney still refunds anyone who asks for their money back, Arnie survived by being more Brand Name than man and Uma Thurman only escaped by crawling back to Tarantino land.
Silverstone and O'Donnell? game over... Heads had to roll for that travesty and unfortunately theres were the youngest and easiest to take.

Alicia Silverstone had a career...?

thats what I was thinking. She was nothing more than a "flavor of the month". Her "career" wouldnt have lasted much longer even if she didnt do B&R.

Nobody remembers her really. When I watched Scooby Doo 2 I didn't even know it was her until I looked closer.

"Suit me up Uncle Alfred" was one of the worst lines....

Clooney was the guy who became a list in Hollywood but ruined O'Donnell's and Silverstone's careers. That's way the they do business in Hollywood I guess.

How grateful does Bale (and all of us) have to be for not getting cast as Robin?

You could make a Bizarro fan film where Christian Bale is the butt of Batman fan jokes for his role in Batman and Robin, while we're all in crazy love with Chris O'Donnell and performance as Bruce Wayne in Begins and TDK and getting amped to see him as John Connor in Terminator Salvation.

Where is the official info about Bale being offered the role as Robin? I haveheard of it before but never seen anything official on it.

Alicia Silverstone was only known for Clueless and two Aerosmith videos, "Crying" and "Crazy." I don't think she would have had much of a career beyond that anyway even if she hadn't been in Schumacher's Batman & Robin.

It's been in his bio forever that he auditioned for the role, was never offered it though.

HOWEVER having not read his bio since 2006, when I went to go provide you with a source I discovered it had since been updated...
Bale had been a contender to portray Batman from as early as 2002. It was reported that he had previously auditioned for the role of Robin in Batman Forever (1995), but lost out to Chris O'Donnell.[26] However, this rumour was later dispelled by Bale himself in a magazine interview in 2008.

so there you have it.

Where did you get from? imdb? He never was offered.

Are you high? I never said he was offered the role. I said it's been in his bio all over the Internet for years that he AUDITIONED for it and in the same post I discredited my own statement. So... um why are you continuing the debate?

Alicia Silverstone never really had a career to begin with. After the success of "Clueless", she stared in a string of flops.

I couldn't agree more, what career? All she's pretty much known best for is the Aerosmith video and Clueless. Woo-hoo.
