Obviously there are those of us on the board--like myself--who had serious gripes, doubts, and so on about the film before it came out. So, did it change anybody's mind? As I said in the review thread, it certainly changed mine. I was stunned by how unbelievably awesome the film was. It kicked so much ass it hurt. I'm seeing it again tomorrow.

Was anybody else surprised?

i went from loving it to ehhhhhhh half and half here.... i need to see it again

I had my doubts from the Ebert reaction initially but the film proved what a senile bastard he is.

It owned on so many levels and I really enjoyed it.

I like eberts reviews most of the time. His taste matches mine most of the time. I certainly disagreed with him this time. I had no expectations going in to this movie and I think it made it more enjoyable.

I doubt most people that bashed it before even seeing it will admit they liked it. Most people dont like to admit they were wrong. Same thing if you praised it before seeing it and end up not liking it.

The film was enjoyable until the last half dragged it down.

Being a life long fan of The Man Of Steel I was excited since we had all waited 20 years to see him on the big screen again and I was not let down. I thought everyone was great and can't wait to see it again. I had some doubts about the kid but lets be honest no one has really updated the Superman story in such a long time that something needed to be done. Lets not forget that at first back in the late 30's he couldn't fly he could only jump very high, it wasn't until the radio show that he flew so sometimes change is good. :supes:

never once did i say to myself... the colors of the suit are off... the neckline is too small... etc etc. those small things people complained about werent just a factor when you are watching the movie. i liked the suit going into the movie anyways. with that said... my mind didnt change because i expected a great movie and got one. if i had to not like anything... i didnt like that the movie got cut up way too much imo.

I'm gonna be honest. Before Superman Returns, the only Superman fim I ever enjoyed at all was the Superman/Batman animated film. Even the first one and the oh-so-loved-by-geekdom Superman II did not entertain me. I was scared this film would keep that going, but honestly, once the plane scene happened, I was hooked. This movie owned.

I was pumped, so amped for this movie... thought it was gonna rock. But it sucked. That's how it changed my mind.

It exceeded every expectation I had going in. My biggest thought was
(would this film apeal to todays youth)? Well the theatre was full of teenagers and before the movie began all I could hear from them was

"Superman is sooo gay" or "Dude he's wearing ferry tights"

That was before the movie started, after it was over there was a huge applause and now I heard comments like,

"That movie was so Sick", and "we gatta see this again!"

So I have a feeling this movie will give the new generation a hero, the same way Christopher Reeve did for a lot of us when we were growing up.

peace

No, I thought it looked "okay" and I was right.

I gave it a chance and still was pretty dissapointed with it!

I thought last year it would be a good, not great film. After just seeing it, I was right. Its a good film, but far from a great one. On par with the spidermans but a step below batman begins. However, given the inherent campiness of the superman character, I think Singer and co. did an admirable job.

I went into this movie with low expectations and got a rude a slap in the face. I read the book, I viewed all the posts and watched the previous flims. I didn't think it was going to be as good as it was because Routh didn't look good in the pics and from the previews I saw and not impressed. This movie proved me wrong and believe that having Singer as director was the best choice. I'm now humbled by what I saw and believe that WB & DC did an excellent job in this movie made! I can't wait to see what lies ahead for Superman.

Ya I noticed of the few who didnt like it; most of them have inherent problems with the character of Superman to begin with....way before this film was conceived.

But I do thing Singer tried to reinvent him to some degree to cater to their tastes (make the MOS flawed to a certain extent)...but he couldnt completely change the character....(that would be bad for the fans OF the character)..

So I think he did the best he could with that.

They strayed from the campiness, but then did a total 180 and made it so bland and boring. But there was camp. Look at the kid wheezing, then he throws a piano and kills bad guy.

i love reading posts like this! hehe

No it didn't change my mind. I did give it a chance to impress me, and their was an awesome factor in just seeing a live action superman again in 20 something years (which I think deludes too many on here , and similar phenonmenon happened with 'Return of the Sith'), but it severely lacked an essential Superman, optimism and an 'upbeatness' to it. The Superman: the homewrecker subplot played into this. I feld kinda depressed for Marsden character. I also think the Superman death scare should not have been used and saved for physical opponenet like Doomsday. The whole darn thing just seemed gloomy. Couldn't Routhe have a few more lines? He looks like he has a severe depression the entire movie.

If I was WB and Legendary, I'd ask for a 300M dollar refund.

So, My mind didn't change, it still sucked despite the awesomeness factor of seeing a live action supes.

Not really...it was alright, but far far from the "movie from heaven" that so many on here are proclaiming it to be. For all the ideas of "Superman coming back to a world that has moved on without him" and "Lois has a kid and a fiancee" that all the publicity of the movie centers around, it still feels like Singer and Co. were simply thinking "Lets do our version of the 1978 movie." The plot is pretty similar to the '78 film, but amped up...save Lois from a helicopter mishap? Let's change it to an airplane with a space shuttle attached instead! Lex tries to sink California? Let's have him try to sink most of the United States instead! Even some of the dialogue was taken straight out of the original movie. That was probably my biggest disappointment...I was expecting the "franchise" to move forward but instead it retread what's been done before. Maintaining the tone and spirit of the original films is fine (and seeing as how this is supposed to be a sort-of-sequel to Superman II, it's necessary), but in many ways it almost felt like a remake rather than the next chapter in the saga.

That said, there was still much to like. My mind was changed about Brandon Routh in the starring role. When I first saw him he just didn't look right for the part to me, but after watching the movie it was obvious that he was right for the role. He puts enough of Reeve into his performance to stay consistent with the previous films but makes the role his own at the same time. Christopher Reeve will always be the best Superman in my eyes, but that's not a knock on Routh; its a childhood memories-based bias much in the same way that to my dad, the best Superman will always be George Reeves. Brandon did a great job. The special effects were top notch, Spacey was a fine Lex Luthor and I was surprised (in a good way) by the amount of humor in the movie. I liked some of the little things too, like how Richard White was portrayed as a good and noble character instead of the cliched "jerk that doesn't deserve to be with the girl" type. I liked the movie enough that I'll buy the dvd; this just wasn't the be-all end-all best superhero movie ever it's been hyped up to be.

^I kinda saw supes as the jerk actually. Mainly from the fact that he says nothing upon his departure to her. I kinda wanted Richard to win out.

Heaven forbid Ebert has a different opinion than you. Oh yeah, he's a senile bastard!

I tend to agree with him. I was really excited to see SR, and while it had some really cool moments, it left me cold.

Singer as director was FAR from the best choice. He's a mediocre director who keeps bringing along his mediocre screenwriters and casts mediocre actors.

That's not really camp, but whatever.

It met the level of my exspectations, can put it more simply than that. it is a true new Superman film.

I seen a couple kids doing the flying arm's, so in that respect, I think it will earn it's new audience.
