Not really...it was alright, but far far from the "movie from heaven" that so many on here are proclaiming it to be. For all the ideas of "Superman coming back to a world that has moved on without him" and "Lois has a kid and a fiancee" that all the publicity of the movie centers around, it still feels like Singer and Co. were simply thinking "Lets do our version of the 1978 movie." The plot is pretty similar to the '78 film, but amped up...save Lois from a helicopter mishap? Let's change it to an airplane with a space shuttle attached instead! Lex tries to sink California? Let's have him try to sink most of the United States instead! Even some of the dialogue was taken straight out of the original movie. That was probably my biggest disappointment...I was expecting the "franchise" to move forward but instead it retread what's been done before. Maintaining the tone and spirit of the original films is fine (and seeing as how this is supposed to be a sort-of-sequel to Superman II, it's necessary), but in many ways it almost felt like a remake rather than the next chapter in the saga.
That said, there was still much to like. My mind was changed about Brandon Routh in the starring role. When I first saw him he just didn't look right for the part to me, but after watching the movie it was obvious that he was right for the role. He puts enough of Reeve into his performance to stay consistent with the previous films but makes the role his own at the same time. Christopher Reeve will always be the best Superman in my eyes, but that's not a knock on Routh; its a childhood memories-based bias much in the same way that to my dad, the best Superman will always be George Reeves. Brandon did a great job. The special effects were top notch, Spacey was a fine Lex Luthor and I was surprised (in a good way) by the amount of humor in the movie. I liked some of the little things too, like how Richard White was portrayed as a good and noble character instead of the cliched "jerk that doesn't deserve to be with the girl" type. I liked the movie enough that I'll buy the dvd; this just wasn't the be-all end-all best superhero movie ever it's been hyped up to be.
