I do, dead eyes are no more thanks to WETA ever since they did Avatar. No uncanny valley here and TinTin is next, GO WETA!

You mean the "uncanny valley"? Yeah, WETA is good with the eyes. Tintin will be the real test because it shows up more in full mocap movies.

The orangutan was their most amazing accomplishment. I could almost swear that was real.

Rocket and Maurice most definitely looked real. Avatar overcame the dead eye syndrome first IMO.

In my eyes Weta already this in 2005 with King Kong, the eyes were superb on him in that movie, heck, its how we knew he died before falling off the top of the empire state.

Well Avatar and Planet of the Apes are different because those eyes are inhuman therefore since (as humans) we do not encounter people with big yellow eyes often, we let a lot of things slide. This isn't to take anything away from their accomplishments because they did an amazing job in both movies. I just think I will become truly impressed when they can do this to fully human characters.

Lets not forget that the CG characters weren't human though. Our brains are very good at detecting human movement and can pick up even the slightest oddity.

In my opinion, King Kong did it better and that was six years ago. And before that, the Dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were incredible too. However, if we're speaking striclty human, I'd like to put Tron: Legacy out there. Clu/Young Kevin looked REAL in about half the scenes and CG in the other half.
Avatar is an unfair comparison as the proportions, movements, colour and skin of the Na'vi are so different that our brains don't even associate them with being people to begin with.
RotPotA was well done too, but Ceasar just looked too weird at parts.

Didnt I say that a few quotes earlier?

:cwink:

Avatar was kind of a mixed bag because the eyes of the Na'vi were basically cat eyes, that change depending on the light from either slits to giant pupils.

I agree

They're all alright, nothing more. Personally, I find Avatar's and KK's cgi to be just ok(and this is coming from a person who does a lot of 3D modeling/rendering). Apes was better than KK, but nothing earth shattering in my eyes.

Maurice passed the test because he wasn't really doing anything too out of the ordinary that a normal orangutan wouldn't do. His eyes kind of looked around a little more than most normal ones, but that's about it.

I did too,When I found out the orangutan was fake I :wow: 'd.

I knew it was fake, but was amazed at how well done it was. However for the most part he also moved a lot less than the rest of the apes. That was the main problem, not the models or the textures but the movement.

Also Digital Domain's work on Benjamin Button was great

Even on the parts where Brad Pitt was only being age 10 years or so, well within the limitations of effective makeup work, and in parts where I was sure they did switch to makeup, they were still using cg.

 I totally forgot about Kong.

Indeed. For all that movie's flaws, I was astonished by what Weta did with Kong. I was not expecting something that legitimately real. That scene where Naomi Watts has to charm him is remarkable. He's bored, he's a bully, he's elated, he's pissed, he's ashamed and it's all completely convincing and much of it is in the eyes. It's a real performance. Gollum was great, but Kong was where I went "well, they've done it. Weta knows how to make a soul with CG."

Avatar was pretty goddamn amazing too.

Davey Jones was flawless too. I just wish I could sit through the bloated messes that are the movies surrounding him.
