In Squadron Supreme #4 Stanley and Emil Burbank are engaged in a discussion about world domination in which Emil (SS "villian" character and world's smartest man)seems to be presenting the group with his typical and cynical "pearls of wisdom".

The conversation goes as follows.

Stanley: You just think you've got all the answers to life, the universe and everything. Don't you?

To which Emil smugly responds

Emil: 42

Consequently 42 is the name of Marvel's world's smartest man (Reed Richards) "solution" to the uprising in Civil War, a disk which includes plans for a holding base and implementation of policies. Since I have no idea whether 42 is code for something else involving Universal mysteries, I have no idea whether or not it is a crack or allusion to Civil War...but maybe.

The other point to note is SS is about a world where Superheroes have to work for the Government.

I think the number 42 has to do with the book called "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" in which the number 42 was the answer for bassicly the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. I could be wrong though.

Oh well there you go, since I never bothered to read the book, that is probably it.

Good Books...

Yeah, that's the first thing that popped into my mind (Hitchhiker's), rather than Civil War.

yes, it's a reference to HGttG

the third book in the series is actually called Life, the Universe and Everything

I don't want to be an ass, but this is really quite embarassing... sorry mate, we all make mistakes. :) :(

Wait so this doesn't even take place in regular continuity?

well to be honest the Original SS miniseries delt with this issue back in the 80's

ummmm....no one here was embarassed about anything.

Those spoke about Hitchhikers are correct. according to a immensly powerful supercomputer, Deepthought, the answer to Life the Universe and Everything is 42... apparently the complicated part was discerning the QUESTION to life the Universe, and Everything (You know, so the answer makes sense).

I do feel sorry for that girl she was raped because she promised not to show off her powers. Very sad:(

I'm pissed at the writer because he felt that the only appearance of religion in comics needs to be as a precursor for evil things.

well... isn't that true?

Beg pardon? I have no sense of humor to day, so please let me know if you are kidding.

just taking a jab atcha. There's no need to take it so seriously.

THanks for the heads up, LIke I said, my sense of humor isn't functioning quite right this morning, so I may be touchy.

I thought the number is 14?

I think the Civil War thing is probably even a refference to HHGTTG as well...it seems to be Reed and Tonys answer to everything that's going on with Civil War and all
