The difference between the Black Canary and Robin is he's a teenage side kick and she's a hero on the Green Arrow's level. She is one of the few characters let alone women to survive the era when comics nearly died. She's as pivotal to the Green Arrow mythos as Mary Jane Watson is to Spider-Man without the damsel in distress label normally assigned to the hero's love.
While I really, really want her to be kept around, I do not agree that she has to be kept around because she is essential for the show or anything. I have read lots of Green Arrow comics where BC does not feature, and she also does her own thing in the comics too. Laurel has been on the show for 4 seasons and there has been a "Canary" for three of the four seasons, so BC has featured on this show. It is not like they brushed over her or anything. She has featured in this universe's GA's life.
I still don't agree that keeping BC is essential or as important as the poster I quoted was making out. You can have a great, comic accurate GA show without her. This shows problems and decline in quality has little to do with not enough characters or stuff from the comics being used, it is down to other things, I would say. Nobody was complaining in season 1 and 2 about there being no BC, and most people would have happily had Laurel killed off in season 1, with no Canary on the show at all. I also think some of the complaints (not from you) are hypocritical, as I am sure that a lot of BC fans would be happy if they had a show with BC as the star, and it did not feature GA much.
