The Associated Press is reporting that filmmaker Anthony Minghella, who won an Oscar for his 1996 film The English Patient, has passed away at 54.

The prestigious director known for films like The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain and most recently, Breaking and Entering, all with Jude Law, was recently filming an adaptation of Alexander McCall Smith's The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and was scheduled to shoot a segment for the anthology New York, I Love You. Further details are not available at this time.

This is truly a sad day.

I absolutely adore Ripley and Cold Mountain, and I love Patient.

He will be missed.

I enjoyed his work . It's sad to see him go.

Well this is a shock, i know of him, despite never seeing one of his movies all the way through (you know when sometimes you just dont seem to get to watch a movie all he way through?), but he seemed very talented, and 54 is just too young for anyone to die.

Really sad news, and quite shocking....R.I.P.

I think you may want to put this in both the celebrity and misc. film forums, though, just so people catch it. I know he's not a Paris Hilton, but still.

holy smokes :wow::csad:
he was on Tv the other day doing an interview for the No1 Ladies Dectective Agency.

2008 seems like the year really talented people are dying.

honestly, this is VERY shocking. Terrible lost of a director of such high caliber.

Damn, this year isn't going to be so good for movie stars. First Ledger, now Minghella :( :down

R.I.P.

Heard it was a Brain Hemmorage during a routine opertation :(

I haven't seen any of his films I believe. But ANYBODY dying at 54 is ****ty. So RIP.
