Earlier today we had the opportunity to speak with Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston (stay tuned for our continued coverage from the interview).

We spoke about some of the challenges inherent in creating a period piece that has futuristic elements, updating a classic character for a modern age, the possibilities for a Captain America 2 and a Johnston-helmed film adaptation of The Winter Soldier, the Bucky Barnes story – and finally, Johnston’s interest in a Boba Fett centered film.

Towards the end of our conversation I asked Johnston if his former boss and mentor, George Lucas, had seen the Captain America. The director gave us this somewhat surprising and thoroughly intriguing response:

“You know if he wants to see it, I would show it to him. I’m trying to get George to make a feature based on Boba Fett.”

When asked if he would direct the film Johnston said simply, “I would like to, it would be a lot of fun.”

Johnston began his career working as a storyboard artist for George Lucas – who recommended that the future director attend his own alma mater, USC film school, and continue to work for him. Johnston accepted the offer and went on to work for Lucas as a designer and visual effects art director on Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. He created the designs for some of the franchise’s most beloved characters and vehicles including: Yoda, the Ewoks, The Millennium Falcon, The X- and Y-Wing Fighters, The Imperial Snow Walkers, The Imperial Star Destroyer – and of course: Boba Fett.

If Captain America is the critical and fan success that some are anticipating it will be, will Lucas be more inclined to legitimately explore the idea of:

A) Expanding the Star Wars Universe on the big screen, and

B) Handing over the reins to another director?

Will he feel safer with his character in the hands of one of its original creators, a man who has known him since before he was a college graduate? And will a fan base that has felt burned by the franchise in recent years welcome the opportunity to revisit the world through the lens of one of the most popular supporting characters in the Star Wars universe (and a different director at the helm)?

Finally, could Johnston be the man who will bring Star Wars back to the cinemas? There are certainly a number of unanswered questions and the project is undoubtedly in a nascent stage, but the possibilities are fascinating to consider — plenty of successful films have sprung from far less fertile ground.

I would love to see a Boba Fett movie. He's my favorite character from Star Wars. :woot:

We had a Boba Fett movie. It's called Episode II and it ruined more than anything else than the rest of the prequels.

Thats just because Boba was crammed in where he didn't belong and the fact that George Lucas seriously cannot write.

Yeah, and aside from that he's a throwaway character from the original movies. Hey, maybe if they make a solo movie, he'll do more than just look cool and jump into a monster.

If this is made it proves that Star Wars is big enough for spin-offs, but it depends on the execution

I would love a Boba Fett film. Sure he was barely in the last two, but there's nothing wrong with expanding his story. It could be pretty badass.

He's a great storyteller and idea man. The man created SW after all. But no, he can't write dialogue very well, apart from a few lines, polished by other writers of course. I've read the samples of his first drafts of the originals. He could never write dialogue well. They sounded more or less of just getting the ideas out, but by God, did they sound robotic. Lucas has always been the same in that area. Except in the originals, he was fortunate to have writers to polish his dialogue.

Keep Tamuera Morisson as Fett. Have it open post RotJ, keep explanations of how he escaped the Sarlacc pit vague, because who gives a hoot. Make it a heist film or a men on a mission film, co-starring some real mugs like Mickey Rourke, Ron Perlman, Danny Trejo, Dolph Lundgren and Ving Rhames. Make reference to what's happening with post Galactic war power struggles, but never show any of it.

If they make it like a spaghetti western, I'm all for it.

If Marvel can make all these different superhero movies work as part of the larger Avengers universe, maybe Star Wars spinoff movies that exist outside of the main story could work?

Far easier than Marvel, because they don't even need to exist in the same planet!

No offence to the actors but this cast sounds like a straight DTV B movies :)

I'd rather have a Boba Fett and his merry bounty hunters band as an anime than a movie.

They where the only ugly mug, cutthroat pirate types I could think of.

edit: Actually, you know what, there is a 'policy' on what can be said and what can't in the main SW thread that I don't like. I voiced my opinion on that, and as a protest against that, the SW clique left the thread hanging without reply.
As my own personal Lisa Simpsonesque protest against this, I won't be talking anymore about SW in any shape or form on these boards.

Ugh, no Star Wars Origins: Bobba Fett movie. Please. He's in it for the money, we don't need any more motivation than that.

I'm not a fan of Star Wars but this character was a wasted opportunity, he was this cool bounty hunter who was killed off too soon and should have not been a mere thug. This spin-off should portray him as this anti-hero like The Man With No Name from the Dollars trilogy by Sergio Leone.

If there is a Boba Fett movie, he should be a corrupt landlord who overcharges his tenants, and also has a clothes or trinkets shop somewhere either in the Medditeranean or the Middle East where he tries to accost customers in the street.

I love the Fett characters, I think if this takes place post ESB it could work, but I'm not completely sold.

Nah. People think they want a Boba Fett movie but the character only works because he's a mystery. A barely explained "Cool Image" looking badass and enigmatic in the background, You give him the spotlight of a solo movie and i think a lot of people are going to be disappointed...

Screw Boba Fett. Give me a movie with this

He definitely can tell a good story, but whether or not he actually always does is another matter. He's kine of like Goyer in that way.

However did Lucas write the script for American Grafiti because really that script is not bad.

Yeah because Bobba Fett fans absolutely hate all the books and comics that have been published solely about him.:whatever::oldrazz:
