Directors In Decline

In my opinion I think Robert Zemeckis is slowly declining. It's hard to believe the guy who directed A Christmas Carol and Beowulf made classics like Forrest Gump and Back to the Future. I mean, he's not at the point where his movies are terrible, but he seems to focus more on technology than story...

I consider George Lucas and M. Night Shyamalan a one-shot directors.

THX-1138, American Graffiti, Original Star Wars if you are among the internetlucasrapedmychildhood types.

Empire Strikes Back says it all.

Lucas should have sticked to writing (kind of) and allowed rewrites by other writers to strengthen the dialogue.

I'm sure if he would have gotten talented directors for the prequels along with other writers to brush up his screenplays we'd have fantastic prequel films that wouldn't be so polarizing.

Complete junk. Kershner never did anything of note without Lucas. Knew this would be a bash Lucas thread. How about a thread about something POSITIVE for once??!??!

This was made after a similar positive thread called Director of the Decade. It's mentioned in the opening post.

Wow you need to calm down guy.

I love the original Star Wars series. A New Hope is my favorite which Lucas directed.

Doesn't mean the the other films (ROTJ and the prequels) don't have their fair share of problems.

No one is bashing anyone. I just personally think Lucas is a far better story writer than director.

I just consider Lucas bashing to be internetguycliche#1.

Again no one is bashing Lucas. All I'm sensing is internethypersensitivitycliche# 1.

Actually the very first director named in the thread in HUGE LETTERS no less was Lucas. I mean, c'mon, I don't think bashing Lucas and the prequels is breaking any huge new ground or is an earth-shattering revelation. People have only been doing it since the late 90's. I just get sick of all the whining and constant negativity.

This is the type of a thread that does that to people. it gets to them. Just like how I can't stand reading the "Most overhyped movie" thread or whatever.

Lucas was never a great director. He just had the good fortune back in the early to mid-1970s to fall in with actors who could do far more with each other than just be 'Faster' and 'More Intense', particularly the young actors of that time.

I meant to say something about this yesterday...

He didn't 'just happen to fall in', he interviewed stacks of actors for the roles, wanting to cast unknowns. If you have ever seen the footage of some of the other candidates for Han, Leia and Luke you will realise how cheeseball, affected and dated their acting styles are, they play it like guest stars on Happy Days or Welcome back Kotter. He cut through the crap and got the right unknowns for the roles.
He might be crap at communicating with actors on set, but he knows the good from the bad and can cast accordingly.
But, nowadays, he'll cast Hayden C for Darth, part of the decline.

I have to agree about Shyamalan. He was really batting them out good with Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs, which are my favourites of his. The village is a fine movie also, even if i am not as into it, it's still very well made.
Lady in the Water, I did not enjoy when I saw it at the cinema, but having revisited it and calmed down my expectations, I think it's actually not a bad little movie, unique.
The Happening, I have only seen once and enjoyed it, but it had some real bad things wrong with it, and in retrospect I'm thinking I gave too many things a pass. At least he was out there doing his own stories, but he probably needs to break up his method, and doing an adaption will hopefully be good for him and get him back on track.

waiting for someone to writte Chris Nolan.

yes posted George Lucas in giant letters, why? because I personally think hes the posterboy for a director in decline. And no I never said that the prequels raped my childhood, quite the opposite, I was only 8 when TPM came out and I loved it at the time, but now that I am older, I can look at the things he did in more recent years, and then look at A New Hope, American Grafiti and THX (which i really like btw) and see that at least in the directorial department he has seems to have slipped a bit.

I do agree that people do resort outright bashing most of the time. The prequels for all their problems did introduce many great characters that were further expanded on in other mediums. And admit it, the lightsaber battles are far more impressive. Also despite all the crap it gets for looking overtly synthetic, Aotc was the first full film entirely captured on digital film, something that is becoming more in practice today.

Lucas made his films on his own terms, but are widely considered to be not as good as his earlier movies, as in a decline.... which is what the thread is for.

Didn't he only have one full movie before this decade? but yes i'm suprised no body said it, just because its the hype and somebody is going to say it.
