The rightwing SCOTUS ruling that essentially money is speech overturned a lot of campaign finance laws so this is an attempt to get them back. It’ll take a lot more in the states for it to go anywhere though.

Rs actually narrowly lost independents in 2022 according to exit polls. Usually the party out of power wins them IIRC.
