I don't know a whole lot about the upcoming film as I try to avoid spoilers for all movies as best I can (might as well let the movie tell the story) but I saw the preview and do you know what I saw? Sin City.

Now I am indeed a big fan of Sin City, the movie and the graphic novel. But this is not Sin City. And now I am coming to realize something about Frank Miller: EVERYTHING he does has uses the same voice, the same narration... From the Dark Night Returns to All Star Batman and Robin to Sin City and now the Spirit.

It fits into the Noir style but it's just filled with such stupid Frank Miller lines like, "My city. I cannot deny her. My city screams. She is my mother." Jeez... It seems almost boring, like we already saw this movie a dozen times but now it has a different title.

And the over-the-top craziness of Sin City is even a major part of the new movie. The characters that are really unrealistic, strange, and unique all at the same time. Sin City's whole cast is pretty much made up of characters like this and now we can already see it again with Samuel L. Jackson's samurai character and some of the females featured in the 2nd trailer...

So what do you guys think? Is it going to be a boring Sin City imitation or is there a brighter side to things that you are looking forward to? What do you think about the Miller version of the Spirit as a whole?

I think you are right- it's going to be FRANK MILLER doing his thing and if you were hoping for Eisner's SPirit or you don't like FM then you're screwed. I see no real brighter side to things. Except maybe that there won't be a sequel. Unfortunately, I don't see a second chance for the Spirit if this film doesn't get the job done- the character is just not that well known to survive on name recognition like say Superman or Batman.

Hi all, Sorry I couldn't start a new thread for this, but I thought this thread is the one is fit best in.

You can bid on an ebay auction to win tickets to the premiere of The Spirit next week. Get a chance to see it before the movie comes out! The Premiere will be held on Dec 17th in Hollywood, CA. There are currently no bids, and the auction ends Sunday. Sounds like pretty good odds to me. :woot:

Proceeds go to the SAG Foundation supporting children's literacy.

Just an FYI!

^I love how you posted this in a thread with nothing but negatives things about the film.

while i saw Sin City and thought it was a ripoff of a lot of things, (70's exploitation MEETS bogart NOIR), I just don't like SIN CITY (books or movie)...

this movie should have been shot in color using very dark lighting (something akin to BATMAN 89)... it's different. Not too different visually, but I am going to be one of the few Spirit fans to give this movie a chance...

All Superhero films have the same premise GOOD GUY IS CREATED/made/born GOOD GUY MEETS bad guy THEN GOOD GUY SAVES GIRL & KILLS BAD GUY...

i dunno... it is NOIR, so I'll have to watch it to give my full opinion....

So FAR though... it looks DECENT @ best

Wow. I never knew anything of the spirit, and with the movie coming closer I hit google image and wikipedia...wow this looks completely off course. The only positive thing is that now that I know about Will Eisner's great works I'm totally going to check out the original works. I love Sin city, but it bothers me that they are so radically changing his origins and even WHAT he is! Arrrgh...

i wanted to blow my brains out watching this garbage. no story and i think that ebert got it right when he said," to say these characters are like cardboard would be an insult to a useful packing item."
