Well, they did this without the bill. Imagine how things would be if the bill actually did pass. Say goodbye to Wikipedia. Google even.

I don't know if this has been put anywhere else, but this seems like a good spot:

Supreme Court rules Congress can re-copyright public domain works

Bad enough they manage extend way past public domain, now they do this.

I am going to slowly wean myself off of companies that support SOPA/PIPA.

Want to mention, some companies never supported it, but Congress piled them together to gain "support" or "credibility".

Check out this article, well before the blackout.

Gibson Guitar & Others On SOPA Supporters List Say They Never Supported The Bill
Hey guys - Gibson does NOT support this legislation. Gibson's CEO has demanded that Gibson be removed from the list of company's supporting SOPA. Don't believe everything you read on the Internet!
For what it's worth, it looks like Gibson's "support" came from a letter sent by the US Chamber of Commerce in support of the general concept of PROTECT IP and SOPA, not directly about SOPA itself. It seems like this is a risk of just agreeing to sign on to something that the US Chamber of Commerce passes around without fully understanding the details or how it is to be used.

Gibson is not alone. Jim D'Addario from D’Addario & Company responded to a tweet by also saying that the company has not supported SOPA (though, he claims it might support a similar bill if it didn't have free speech implications).

I saw that, forgot to mention it.

I laugh at the line saying that Congress wouldn't use this to create perpetual copyrights. They're already doing so.

The copyright on a book used to last until 50 years after the author's death. Congress extended it to 70.

Why?

So the author's estate could keep living off his work? How about the family get off their lazy asses and build a legacy like the author did.

Copyright should end when the author dies, there I said it. Kids need to get a damn job.

I'm sure there wont be another Superman film ever because of that.

Basically, the Chamber of Congress asked these companies if they'd support legislation to counter piracy.

The companies said yes, of course.

And then the Chamber said "These companies support SOPA and PIPA!!!"

And the companies said "...we do?"

I'm sure Disney is happy about this news.

Like they needed it.

They convinced Congress to extend the copyright on Micky Mouse to keep him out of the public domain.

Twice.

Quite a few of them don't even have any stake in SOPA. In the sense they deal with physical stuff, like guitars or motorcycles. It makes no god damn sense why Congress would try to lump them in as supporters of SOPA. Something like the UFC or Times Warner makes sense. But Taylor and Gibson guitar? Really. Those two have made statements they don't support SOPA. Quite a few have back out months ago, including Apple, Microsoft, Adobe and Intel.

I don't mind it extending beyond their death.

But something along the lines of 5 or 10 years, so a spouse left behind still has income. Or until the death of the spouse. Something like that.

Certainly not 50 70 years.

Gibson sells products to content creators. If content creators have no money because of piracy, then Gibson loses sales. So it makes sense they would support anti-piracy legislation. (Also to keep creators happy and going to their competitors)

But since they never wanted to support this, we can call bull **** on the Chamber of Congress.

Perhaps it might be more effective to get a boycott going of one or two companies, and really push it hard. Make an example out of them. Disney looks like a nice and easy target.

World War III will be fought online...

It's starting right now.....if Anonymous has anything to say about it... DoJ, RIAA, MPAA, Universal Music Group & the Copyright office websites down.... white house & FBI websites under attack right now and a 'database dump' is about to happen (according to their twitter account)

Just heard about Megaupload being shut down. Must have been in direct retaliation for what's happening.

Wow. Just wow.

Just for the next 24 hours im just going to have a black avatar in memoriam of Megaupload.

the closing of Megaupload is what's caused the Anonymous actions tonight.... which include the crashing of BMI.com as well BTW
