So what exactly is SOPA? I'm not sure I'm familiar with it.

Companies can say, "lol hey, there's copyrighted material on this site. Block that s**t."

And then everybody in America can't access that entire site anymore.

Why would that make it okay? I don't want to have to rely on anonymous proxies. They are useful but can be quite slow at times.

Saaaaaaaaaarcaaaaaaasssssmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Not only that, the site could be completely taken down, specially if the site's master server is in the U.S. No one around the world would be able to access it.

That's why sites like Facebook and Youtube would be gone.

SOPA has bad idea written all over it. If it goes through I'm moving to China. Wait....Biggest thing is that even if this thing goes through it will do nothing to stop websites from hosting whatever they want. You shut it down and it will just come up under another name in an hour.

I'm not concerned about these laws. The ndaa will be declared unconstitutional by the supreme court the moment someone gets detained under the law.

SOPA is a law that will also go to supreme court because it violates several laws in place also.

We have to prepare for every possibility. Don't be too sure that the supreme court will shoot this down. Write your congressmen just to be sure.

Facebook and the like need to just go Nuclear for 24-48 hours. Go dark with info about SOPA and PIPA on the page.

If Congress lets this pass, everyone currently there would kiss their jobs goodbye. Guaranteed. There are entire companies that rely on Facebook and YouTube for their income.

And what happens if their money-making platform is taken away and the company folds?

Higher unemployment rates! :hehe:

Not to mention everyone young and old is on Facebook now and would riot if that was taken away.

I also have faith in the hacker culture. You can't keep 'em down. :awesome:

I just don't see this law actually passing, and if it does, it's gonna fail easily.

I'm kinda surprised this hasn't gotten more attention here on the hype. Took me a little bit to even find the thread.

I really need to get off my ass and write back to my congresspeople.

My representative said he was concerned about SOPA violating the rights of citizens. So I need to thank him and throw him support.

One senator has actually contributed to the bill to clean up the language. She supports it and I need to let her know, more forcefully, the problems this will cause and say that anyone voting for this bill will not get my vote.

I can't remember what my other senator said. I think it was just a form letter response. Need to hammer on her.

You know, I am often amazed how easily terrible things can be stopped if just a few people just stand up. Well, it's the old cliche line, evil triumphs when good men do nothing. If people got off their ass more, we wouldn't have to put up with this nonsense.

How do we know Anon isn't a false flag group used to justify the crackdown?

i did a little searching on the internet and here's what i found:

Committee Chairman Lamar Smith:"SOPA targets only foreign Web sites that are primarily dedicated to illegal and infringing activity. Domestic Web sites, like blogs, are not covered by this legislation."
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/10/opinion/fighting-online-piracy.html?_r=1

"This bill does not make it a felony for a person to post a video on YouTube of their children singing to a copyrighted song. The bill specifically targets websites dedicated to illegal or infringing activity. Sites that host user content—like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter—have nothing to be concerned about under this legislation" http://www.greeleygazette.com/press/?p=11974

I agree with what the CEO of Go-Daddy said "Fighting online piracy is of the utmost importance, which is why Go Daddy has been working to help craft revisions to this legislation"

I agree with the idea of the bill but I think it need to be refined

If the tech companies are worried about it, I trust them, not those people in Washington.

But yes, Piracy needs to be stop. Won't happen though! I have a friend overseas who HAS to download, because there is no Netflix, or Hulu, hardly any American shows. If stuff is not widely available...people download.

I don't buy the overseas argument. I was stationed in Japan for 3 years. I got by on iTunes

I was in the Navy so I was hardly home...as long as I could get an internet connection I could get to iTunes
