My point being that slavery was doomed to be pushed out one way or the other. As an economic system, it just couldn't compete with a "free" labor market (I use the word "free" loosely). The industrial revolution really left no place for slavery.

And my point is it was the South's failure to properly adapt that necessitated the need for slaves and as such caused a preventable war that had lasting effects on this country.

No question about it. When was the last time you can recall someone giving up their bread and butter whether it be serfdom, slavery, or anything else? Does anyone REALLY believe that the barons of industry in the US would give up their privileged position without a fight even if it was supported by the vast majority of the people?

A friend of mine once said "Come talk to me about freedom and democracy when 60% of the people are voting socialist." We are getting an inkling of that right now with a republican party that clearly doesn't support voting rights because it disadvantages their position of privilege.

A bunch of thin skinned bigots trying to rewrite history because they can't accept that they had ancestors on the wrong side of it.

Anyone who actually bothered to study the Antebellum South knows it was deeply flawed society built on white supremacy that benefited primarily a minority of the the white landed gentry. The south being anti-city and anti-industrial meant it would be left behind economically. The addiction to the inefficient slavery labour and backwards looking white supremacy culture was a weakness that would of hurt them eventually.

These revisionists just buy into the same old romanticized propaganda being pumped out post civil war.

It's not too dissimilar to the fossil fuel barons of our time. Straight up human bondage is of course in a league of it's own. But we are seeing these people forcing society to continue to use inefficient, terrible tech that disproportionally effects minorities, all so they can horde the wealth.

I thought they were against CRT not obvious historical facts. I'm shocked that CRT was just an excuse to teach a neoconfederate version of US history. Absolutely shocked.

If you have to go around insisting that you aren’t a racist, that’s probably a bad sign. Lol

"I'm not a racist but...we have too many Asians here and European cultures are superior," is definitely not a racist thing to say.

If you go into Appalachia today, it is much the same thing. It’s amazing that there is such great animosity in eastern Kentucky for cities like Louisville, yet the “anti-city” attitude is coupled with poverty. Then as you move into more agrarian areas, the margins of wealth are extremely slim. There really is very little middle class.

These under valuation stories for black homeowners pop up every couple of months.

WB's cover art for the new 4K release of Green Mile:

Am I wrong or is this particularly awkward at a time when race relations are so volatile and law enforcement in America is so broken?

I think that’s right. If I recall correctly, they actually had a raised flooring down the middle to make him look taller.

Having grown up in small town rural Indiana, it is always hilarious to me to listen to the locals rail against the "elitist" city-dwellers while they lay out ad-infinitum how their way of life is "right" and "superior" to urbanites. I'm telling you, no one is more elitist than rural conservatives. The Left/Center Left may have its share of out-of-touch condescension but doesn't come close to MAGA country's conviction that they have a monopoly on "proper living."
