🇺🇸 Discussion: The DEMOCRATIC P - Part 3

US News
He's 98 so I'm not that surprised. I just wish him a gentle journey. :(

It's sad... the man walked his talk and was such a humanitarian post presidency. And he did a lot -- heck, my mom took my brother and I to one of his book signings back in 2004! The line was around the block. I vividly remember it being chilly, what I wore and remembering the Secret Service detail in and around the Regulator Bookshop. My mom took a picture of the signing (with my back to the camera) but it's not great quality.

Someone at his advanced age and physical fragility generally don't last that long under hospice care. I'd be surprised if he lasted a week.

I don't remember him well, only that I've heard more flattering things about him as President than others like Reagan. He seems to have served honorably and deserves his rest. :)

He may not be remembered as a great president but as far as I know he served without scandal. I have a soft spot for him since he was president when I was born.

My parents vote Republican but they love Jimmy unconditionally. At that book signing, Mom got three copies of his novels signed (one reason why she took my brother and I there), one copy she gave to her liberal boss at the law firm she worked at.

Back in the day when you could disagree with someone's policy decisions and still like the person. Those days are gone.....

There are policies that I am able to have polite disagreement with.

The problem is, the right has moved to bigotry.

Misogyny, homophobia....hemophilia.....ect... :(
Those and also taking positions that are a legitimate threat to the survival of the human species, such as climate change denial and inaction, as well as the politicization of basic longstanding public health measures and policies like vaccines and quarantined, which served to cause fair more deaths and pain than necessary.

I'm sorry, but I can't engage in polite disagreement with someone who is playing Russian roulette with the fate of me, my family, and my children.

That and they also cheat and tried to stage a violent insurrection when they lost an election fair and square. You can't reason with people who don't even respect democracy.

I'm sure they think they are protecting democracy-- their verson of White Christian democracy that doesn't resemble what the Founding Fathers intended. I think more people need to pay attention in History class.

I always tell the left and right that there's different paths to the same destination and that the public, the voters deserve to have different choices as to that path.

Problem is with the right they aren't offering the same destination at all more than ever, often not even existing in a same reality, or similar values. And they're becoming more violent organizationally.

The wilder ones make me think of ISIS, pushing their extreme and often paranoid views on the rest of us. ISIS ruined every city they occupied, I can't imagine our country would fare much better with the far right wackos in the White House. :(

The conservatives that I’ve talked to have said Carter was an awful president but a good person. I guess I’ll take that. It’s about as good as it gets these days.

While that is true of Founders like Jefferson and Franklin who were not even Christians and who were motivated to enact the First Amendment because they didn't want a new Church of England forcing religion upon them. Which obviously the right forgets in their hero worship of the Founding Fathers and what they wanted.

However, any sort of reference to what the "Founding Fathers" intended is problematic at best. We have to remember that this was a group of rich white men, the majority of whom thought women were irrational creatures unable to engage in public life and who needed fathers and husbands to govern them (hence why Founding "Fathers"). Or who thought that people of colour were biologically inferior and should only be treated as property and therefore did not qualify for "their natural, God given rights as Englishmen". Which is why the right in their racism, sexism, and other bigotry put so much stock in what the Founding Father thought or wanted.

So much of the underlying assumptions and premises that were the foundations for the decisions the Founding Fathers made have been proven false in the intervening 250 years or the world has changed to such an extent, that any conclusions they reached about how to govern American society should be of minimal persuasiveness or importance to us living in the 21st century.

Nate Cohn, NY Times: "The Democrats are putting up an impressive showing in VA-4, the first special congressional election of the cycle. By our estimates, the Democrat is on track to win by 45 points, compared to 30 points in '22 and 36 points in '20" " "Of note: nearly half of voters in this district are Black, and it's been a while since Democrats have overperformed in such a diverse district"

Sam (norwood270): "Rochester Special Election Results!

Grassie (D) - 568 - 56%
Walker (R) - 451 - 44%

Hassan +9 district in Nov.

NH Dems continue their special elect roll. This is really a Dem flip, adding 1 seat to the Dem caucus. NH House will be 201R-197D, likely 201R-198D soon.#nhpolitics"

Several news outlets are calling liberal judge Janet Protasiewicz as one of two candidates that will advance to the April 4th general election for the WI Supreme Court.

She will face Daniel Kelly, the guy unseated by Jill Karofsky in the April 2020 primary election.

I don't know. The Right is doing a good job of making Pete look weak.

Things you have to do when the Supreme Court rules for the minority instead of what voters actually want.

It's just he is very inexperienced in his position and not a very good leader to begin with after hearing how he governed as mayor.
