🇺🇸 Discussion: The DEMOCRATIC P - Part 3

US News
I'm so thrilled about Deegan's victory in Florida. Whatever Nikki Fried and her strategists are doing in the FL Democratic Party, keep it up!

It's baby steps but progress nonetheless.

Philadelphia Mayoral Primary:
79% of expected votes The percentage of estimated expected votes as calculated by the AP. have been reported

Cherelle Parker DEM 65,610 26.4%
Rebecca Rhynhart DEM 43,990 17.7%
Helen Gym DEM 42,314 17%
Allan Domb DEM 22,344 9%
Jeff Brown DEM 17,730 7.1%

Opinion polling showed a very tight race days ago, and I don't know how much of a difference the mail vote will make.

Philadelphia Inquirer has called the Dem mayoral nomination for stop-and-frisk Parker. Parker yelled about crime a lot that would make Trump jealous.

Oh well, can't win them all.
They really watched the disaster Adams has been in NYC and said

Helen Gym Lost, But Philly’s Progressive Movement Isn’t Going Anywhere - In These Times
Gym may not have emerged victorious in the mayoral primary, but the labor-left coalition that powered her campaign has emerged as a formidable political force.
Gym spent her time in City Council crafting legislation to benefit Philly’s workers and tenants. By partnering with unions and progressive organizations, she was able to pass Fair Workweek, a law providing low-wage workers more control over their schedules and their lives. She also passed an eviction diversion program that has been applauded by the Biden White House, and which helped cut evictions in the city by 75%. While her detractors disparaged her as “just an activist,” or someone with lofty goals but no real plan, her recent history of winning material gains for the working class was the sort of work she and her supporters were hoping to take into the mayor’s office.

There are a number of reasons behind Gym’s loss: a vicious and well-funded campaign against her led by billionaire GOP mega-donor Jeffrey Yass, the richest man in Pennsylvania; a crowded field, including Rhynhart, who ran as a “reformer” siphoning off many of Gym’s potential progressive voters, and Parker, who ate into Gym’s potential union support; plus an inability to bring enough Black voters behind her campaign.

Critics may claim that Gym’s loss shows a lack of popular support for progressive policies, but that’s simply not the case. In 2019, Gym won more votes than any other candidate in her re-election bid for City Council. And she won nearly 45,000 votes this week, coming in third place in the mayor’s race, even after Yass’s Super PAC poured $600,000 into daily mailers and television ads targeting Gym. Progressive policies remain popular, seen by both national polling around issues like Medicare for All and a higher minimum wage, but also in Philadelphia, with the recent re-election of progressive District Attorney Larry Krasner, even after he faced an onslaught of conservative attacks.

One of the two remaining D judges on the NC Supreme Court has announced he will not seek reelection next year.

While judges are elected here in NC, the governor has the power to freely appoint a judge if a seat opens up due to retirement, resignation or death (and not the R led legislature). Meaning if Morgan died or forced out at mandatory retirement age after a governor Mark Robinson took office, Robinson could freely appoint another MAGA judge and further rig the state Supreme Court.

Anyone who hasn't seen Anderson Clayton -- I think she is the NC answer to Wisconsin's Ben Wikler. She knows the stakes involved and she will weaponize negative partisan ads against Trump/Robinson but also give Ds something to vote FOR.

As long as she's voting for Biden's judges, she should work through the end of her term. Senate Rs won't vote to confirm a replacement on the Judiciary Committee even if she retired tomorrow and they swore in Barbara Lee to fulfill the remainder of her term.

DiFi is between a rock and a hard place.
Over Pelosi's and Schiff's dead bodies.

“You should follow the—I haven’t been gone. I’ve been working.”

When asked whether she meant that she’d been working from home, she turned feisty.

“No, I’ve been here. I’ve been voting,” she said. “Please. You either know or don’t know.”

We're watching elder abuse play out within the government and everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves.

Feinstein doesn't know what the **** is going on. This isn't her. This is others trying to control her seat. It is disgusting. She should resign, because it is clear she is not mentally competent.

And if the GOP wants to play games, the Dems still have 50 seats to change the rules. They only get away with these games because Dems are respecting past rules.

We don't know that people have asked her to resign and she keeps saying no. There's no legal way to compel her to give up power AFAIK. Until she says 'yes' she's stuck in the Senate as bizarre or grotesque as a spectacle as it is going to continue to be.

Sen. Feinstein asks for temporary Judiciary Committee replacement amid calls for her resignation (April 2023)

It's hard to know what is her statement and what is her staff at this point. Joe Manchin said he would refuse to allow a replacement for Feinstein on the Committee and here we are.

You could be in a vegetative state like Terri Schiavo and still be Senator until you die, retire, or your term expires.

They don't need one Republican vote for a Judiciary Committee replacement if she retires.

What is going on is elder abuse, that is also hurting every single American citizen. there is no upside to this and those who are supporting it are people like Pelosi. Who wants to keep progressives and black women out of power.

The Hill - Minnesota governor signs gun safety bills into law: ‘It’s about keeping our kids safe’

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) signed two gun safety initiatives into law on Friday that will establish universal background checks and a process for temporarily removing firearms from those who imminently pose a threat to themselves or others. Walz signed the measures into law as part of a broader public safety budget bill after it narrowly passed by one vote along party lines in the state Senate last week.
