🇺🇸 Discussion: The DEMOCRATIC P - Part 3

US News
I wish he was running for President. :(

Wait until 2028. He should be more established to voters outside California by then. Biden has the power of incumbency for next year and ignore the partisan attacks on him being a doddering senile fool.

Will we still have a democracy by then? The way things are going I often wonder. :(

If only the federal congress could do so well. :(

President Biden had the filibuster plus two independents and two fake/flakey Democrats to contend with in his first half presidential term in the Senate...most states don't have those things. And now in the second half of his term he has a Republican House plus those impedances leftover from the first half. It stinks but that's what it is.

The way I see 2024 working out is that Trump gets the nom, but Rs get killed down ballot because of him. IF he were to lose to anyone, he would run 3rd party and absolutely kill any right wing chances to win anything. Either way, I see the Dems coming out of 2024 very well unless we have a major economic downturn. The biggest problem the Ds will have in 2024 is that the senate map sets up horribly for them, but if things go sideways for the Rs, it's possible the democratic party could maintain or, possibly, increase their hold on the senate. If they can take back the house (which I think is likely) and maintain their 51 seat majority (without Sinema) or expand it by one, it's almost assured that PR and DC become states.

You're more optimistic than me but I do hope the blue wave happens. It looks like people in general are fed up with with what the Republicans are doing so they damn well better vote like it.

Sludge - Pharma Ally Kurt Schrader Cashes In on K Street
Former Democratic Rep. Kurt Schrader, a prominent ally of Big Pharma while in Congress, has joined a K Street lobbying firm with a heavy roster of pharmaceutical industry clients.
Schrader, who was defeated last year in an Oregon primary by attorney Jamie McLeod-Skinner, became a principal at lobbying firm Williams & Jensen, according to an announcement from the firm earlier this month. A former co-chair of the centrist House Blue Dog coalition, the seven-term Rep. Schrader told Politico that he plans to register to lobby the Biden administration and that while he is barred from directly lobbying Congress for one year under federal law, he “hopes to bring value to his new firm by connecting it with lawmakers willing to make deals in a closely divided Congress.” Specifically, Schrader said he plans to lobby on implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which includes a provision allowing the government to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies for Medicare to pay lower drug prices.
In the previous Congress, Schrader was at the forefront of efforts by a handful of conservative Democrats who fought against the prescription drug pricing reforms that Democratic leaders were planning to include in the budget reconciliation legislation. In May 2021, shortly after President Biden called on Congress to pass legislation allowing the government to negotiate drug prices, Schrader joined a letter from conservative Democrats to Speaker Pelosi expressing their desire for the House to pass healthcare legislation with buy-in from private sector stakeholders that could lower costs for consumers while preserving “our invaluable innovation ecosystem.” In raising innovation, the Democrats on the letter appear to have been gently promoting the interests of the drug industry, arguing that the Democrats’ legislation on drug pricing could cause them to invest less in developing new drugs.

He’s looking at a temporary caretaker for the Senate without messing with the declared 2024 candidates while honoring his pledge for a black female Senator. If Michelle Obama lived in California I’m sure she’d be at the top of the list.

Michelle Obama is running for president, too. Don't you remember CNN's presidential wishlist in 2018. :o

Whoever it is needs to have got some experience as a Senator first IMO. Can't have clowns like Trump jumping straight to the top of a huge political party with no clue how it works.

Barbara Lee is the obvious choice. Not ideal, being 76 herself, but she certainly has the career and qualifications to back up the appointment. But from what I've heard, Pelosi wants to keep Feinstein in office until the next election so that her personal fave, Adam Schiff, doesn't have to run against an incumbent.

I'd say governors and Cabinet secretaries are also effective sources. Heck, even major mayors. But at least some successful degree of experience in leadership & the government process.

Yeah, I'm not as familiar with all the US titles, just want anyone with the potential to lead a whole party to have a minimum level of experience at some senior level over a decent amount of time.

Vance Ulrich: "Another UC Berkeley poll today with Porter (17%) leading Schiff (14%) and Lee (9%) for CA Senate.

Most interesting crosstabs to me—

18-39 YO: 19% KP, 9% Schiff, 12% Lee Latinos: 21% KP, 9% Schiff, 10% Lee

Thats a recipe for Porter to do well in SoCal."

It seems bad that the Republican is ahead, right? :(
