Discussion: UK Politics

I actually voted for Jeremy Corbyn to become Labour leader back in 2015 though I'm less proud of that now than I was then.

What did he say? I remember he had his gaffes too.

Ding dong the witch is dead. That statement he released was a disgrace.
I'd say the political hit job on Corbyn is the disgrace.

What did he say? I remember he had his gaffes too.
Basically Lily, it's the, "Bernie is racist" situation. Except somehow worse. There was no gaffe. Here I copied it from Facebook so you don't have to go there:

My statement following the publication of the EHRC report:

“Antisemitism is absolutely abhorrent, wrong and responsible for some of humanity’s greatest crimes. As Leader of the Labour Party I was always determined to eliminate all forms of racism and root out the cancer of antisemitism. I have campaigned in support of Jewish people and communities my entire life and I will continue to do so.

“The EHRC’s report shows that when I became Labour leader in 2015, the Party’s processes for handling complaints were not fit for purpose. Reform was then stalled by an obstructive party bureaucracy. But from 2018, Jennie Formby and a new NEC that supported my leadership made substantial improvements, making it much easier and swifter to remove antisemites. My team acted to speed up, not hinder the process.

“Anyone claiming there is no antisemitism in the Labour Party is wrong. Of course there is, as there is throughout society, and sometimes it is voiced by people who think of themselves as on the left.

“Jewish members of our party and the wider community were right to expect us to deal with it, and I regret that it took longer to deliver that change than it should.

“One antisemite is one too many, but the scale of the problem was also dramatically overstated for political reasons by our opponents inside and outside the party, as well as by much of the media. That combination hurt Jewish people and must never be repeated.

“My sincere hope is that relations with Jewish communities can be rebuilt and those fears overcome. While I do not accept all of its findings, I trust its recommendations will be swiftly implemented to help move on from this period.”
If the idea of the bold part is the issue, I am calling BS, because I watched the news. I read it. It was obvious what was happening and Corbyn is right. But people in his own party wanted him, the news over there loves to latch on to crap like this, and the Tories of course attacked appropriately. Every single time the issues of Boris or the Tories in general came up, they used the smokescreen of anti-Semitism, that clearly has little to no basis. The conservative party and government in the UK is openly bigoted all the time. The Conservative government over there just hired a homophobe to work on "trade deals". How's that going?

So what's the difference? It's all considered baked in bigotry, much in the way we have it over here. It is the same with the news over there, which is consistency ridiculous in how it covers racism, Islamophobia, and especially transphobia. They constantly run scare stories about little kids being "forced" into transition super young (none of this is true), and feed into the narrative that bigoted groups run by known TERFs have some sort of legitimate stand in stating that the existence of transgender women is somehow harmful to cis women.

But don't listen to me. Just watch the video from your very pretty Canadian man. :D

I can't wait to find out how horrible AOC is in a few years. Not from the Republicans, but the Democrats. Well, more then they already do.

From what I've seen of US politics, there is no Corbyn equivalent. I find the comparison some make between Corbyn and Sanders very confusing. Many of the people who are disillusioned with Corbyn now are people who could support a Sanders or a Warren if they were UK politicians.

I also see people saying Johnson is the same as Trump. I don't really understand how people can't see the acres between them, just because they are on one side of a political spectrum. Cameron, Major, Thatcher and May are all Tories who are very different to each other and Johnson is unique (in a very dumb, clownish way). Farage is the most similar to Trump.

See, that "dumb, clownish way" is the big factor. Also that they try to seem a bit buddy, buddy.

No gaffe? The mural? The Smeeth heckler? The foreword for the book? The treatment of Luciana Berger? Attaching himself to the likes of McCluskey? And then he turns a statement regarding the inquiry into an opportunity to play the victim. He could have used it to put a line in the sand but no. Bloke has shown time and time again he lacks the ability of self reflection.

Honestly I think Labour is too broad a church. I think it would be better for everyone if the Corbynites just created a new party.

So in 10 days I've heard Boris slag off Starmer for suggesting a national lockdown, Brandon Lewis call it a horrid socialist idea and Raab laugh it off only yesterday.....to Dom leaking that we're in fact going to have another lockdown.

Being a dumb clown is not really one of Trump’s worst faults. Maybe number ..45 on the list.

Haha, the clown-show in action. Luckily it was so predictable that I’m well prepared for it.

I definitely understand the call for that. Unfortunately the left would just get weaker again. It’s already split between Labour and the Lib Dems. It would be amazing news for the Tories if that happened.

Yea that is true.

Have fun with that over there. At least it will be less armed than over here...

I still don't know how they got away with the Brexit party, it was quite clearly a money making grift.
At least you guys have hope, come Wednesday you could be heading in a new direction, we're going to be stuck with this shirt for decades

Well, I'm seeing reports of the beginnings of the UK Sovereign Citizen movement, so you guys have fun with those Magan Carta loving crazies....

So they’re going to move to be an even dumber single issue party.

So what do we think, that £10k from his Brexit candidates that he pulled last minute or has Aron Banks given him some pocket money?

Really happy for our yank friends but also very sad as I realise we're only at the start of our bad place and it's going to last generations.
