Discussion: UK Politics

Sunak's got the problem of being closely associated with Johnson, while also being seen as a traitor by the Johnson loyalists.
I think they're going to go for someone with some distance, Mordaunt or Tugendhat maybe.
Makes sense. I saw some polls that had Sunak losing a 1 on 1 against Mordaunt or Truss. All theoretical at this stage but it’s not a done deal yet at least.

I think on the 1v1 polls, it was always the most pro-brexit candidate that won.

I would want a candidate on the Remain side and far away from the right, but then a lot of the lost votes might go to Reform/UKIP instead of Labour and make them get taken a bit more seriously (as they were during European elections), which would be an even bigger disaster. I'm glad Boris is out but I want the new Tory leader announcement to be a bit of a non-event that doesn't create waves and push voters further right.

I think those days in the Tory party are done, it's all about ideological purity now. The comments I'm reading on Mordaunt from her critics you'd think she was a long time advocate of socialism.

From The Telegraph

Suella Braverman is said to be supporting Liz Truss and half of her backers (she had 27) are said to be following her move (which would bring Truss close to Mordaunt).

Tom Tugendhat eliminated today. The votes were Sunak 115, Mordaunt 82, Truss 71, Badenoch 58.

Badenoch is now out. Down to Sunak, Mordaunt and Truss.

We in the US are deeply, deeply sorry you guys.

Reminds me why I'm so glad to be rid of him. Hopefully people stop listening to anything he says now. Doubt the successor can be worse.

A horrible shame that is the bar they need to pass.

I am eagerly awaiting us Scots getting another chance to hit the eject button next year.

Rishi Sunak gets 137 votes, Lizz Truss gets 113 and Penny Mordaunt gets 105. So Mordaunt now out and it's between Sunak and Truss for next PM.

I don't blame you at all, but from a selfish point of view I want you to stay. Don't want a future UKIP style party to make gains on the right from the Tories being terrible, and Scotland (being a more sensible country) is a great protection against a party like that every getting total control. Do you think if there was another referendum anytime soon that it would result in Vote Leave winning?

I can appreciate that desire, but the sad thing is I don't think we have much influence. Scotland has been rejecting the Tories for decades but it hasn't stopped them from getting power.

I really don't know what the result would be. Sadly I think the main motivation for Brexit was fear of immigrants, and I don't think Britain has any become less xenophobic since 2016.
Maybe the economic damage has been enough to override the bigotry, but I wouldn't like to bet on it.
I think for a lot of people Brexit has become part of their identity, like a football team. It's entrenched, they spent so long arguing for it they'll never change their mind, regardless of the evidence they are presented with.

The fact that the Tories and Labour are both commited to being pro-brexit doesn't help.

I remember how this plays out. Good luck. Probably going to have less violence than over here, at least.

I'm guessing the end of V for Vendetta will be applicable here.

Sunak and Truss seem to be battling about who hates trans people more for the Tory base

I wouldn't like to see Scotland leave but I don't blame them for leaving. Being shackled to a bunch of deluded little Englanders obsessed with misremembered past glories is just as frustrating for some of us Englanders as well.

The commitment to Brexit despite the evidence of the harm it is doing is annoying but it is political suicide for Labour to say they would U turn right now. If Stammer said he was commited to having another referendum then members of his own party would revolt against him.

Populist Xenophobia has been on rise around the world for a while now. Trump in America, Le Pen in France, Orban in Hungary and so on. It isn't solely a England problem so it is a difficult issue to solve. Until a section of the population grow enough courage and convictions to stop blaming all the nations issues on immigration things will remain the same.

Most people in the UK have seen their quality of living go down under over a decade of Tory rule but they still think the Tories are the best people to lead the country. Some of the population have Stockholm syndrome in which they identify with the people holding them hostage.

They need JK Rowling's endorsement to be the ultimate one. :o

Sunak: I'll take us out of the European Court of Human Rights

Truss: I'll ban protests

They've now moved on to competing to see who can be the most fascist.

And unfortunately for yourself, South of the border we absolutely love that shirt. If it's against the English people's best interests we'll almost certainly love it.

Looks like the bills might be rising before October now.
