Discussion: Voting Rights and Election Law

Spotlight PA - Bill allowing counties to process mail ballots early clears first hurdle in Pa. House

Oregon Capital Chronicle - One-third of Oregon Senate now ineligible for another term as Republican walkout continues
All but three Republicans in the Oregon state Senate have now made themselves ineligible to serve another term under a voter-approved state law intended to prevent walkouts. Six Republican senators, including Senate Minority Leader Tim Knopp, R-Bend, hit their 10th unexcused absence on Thursday morning. Three other Republicans and an independent senator reached that threshold earlier this week, meaning one-third of the Senate is now barred from serving another term because of a constitutional amendment voters approved last year.

Maybe there will be a civil war after all. Texas and Florida can make their own country of fascists and bigots.

So are there any lawsuits about the constitutionality over any of these things, or was democracy as easy to tear up as a few people deciding their states just weren't going to follow it anymore? It's really disheartening to hear everyone's reactions to these kinds of things being, *shrug* "Well, we had a good run."

Republicans have lied, cheated, stole, gerrymandered, bought and done everything they can (including attempted coup) to take and keep power. With the current SCOTUS being mostly made up of them, it's hard to retain and regain rights lost to these facists.

This is what frightens me the most. :( I am the parent of a child who identifies as queer. She has a lot to lose.

This group, Restoring Integrity and Trust in Elections (RITE), was co-founded in July 2022 by Karl Rove, a high ranking member of former President George W. Bush’s administration. Its top leadership includes the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) chief counsel, a member of the RNC’s Election Integrity Committee and former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr.

Yes these guys are benefitting from the Election Lies grift as well.

It's all for naught unless if/when it goes into effect that there's a legally sympathetic SCOTUS at that time, whether states can assign their electors to the national popular vote leader.

Not only did that 1929 act by President Hoover and the Republican Congress cap the size of the House to not grow with the population as it was intended, but it also caps the electoral college size since the electoral college is also based on the number of seats...in the House.

This is one of the structural problems in our government. Another problem is that more Americans are living in fewer states.

Fact check: Trump, in 2023, tells a new lie about the 2020 election | CNN Politics

It’s called next to nobody lives there in most counties and a candidate doesn't get 100% of the vote in most of those counties.

Census.gov - 2020 Population Distribution in the United States and Puerto Rico

Business Insider - Half of the US population lives in these 9 states (2016)
The Washington Post - In about 20 years, half the population will live in eight states (2018)

This distribution problem gives more power to lower density areas, which are dominated by Republicans and so-called conservatives. Democrats have the wind and current going against them in elections in order to exceed 50% in the Senate, yet alone exceeding a filibuster-proof 60%.

That's only a secret to Republicans for some reason.
