Disney's Haunted Mansion reboot (Justin Simien)

There's a whole background of that and the original bride here:

thanks for the site. it has some pretty cool stuff on there

it's wishful thinking, but i'm guessing that after the movie is released Disney will re-add the Hatbox Ghost to the ride. sort of like how they added Capt Jack, Davey Jones, and Barbosa to the Pirates ride after the films were released

It sounds like the movie is going to be based around the hatbox ghost, who was part of the original DL ride but was cut because the effect never worked right (his head was supposed to disappear and reappear in his hatbox).

My memory of the original HM film is a bit foggy (not that I mind), but other than Leota and the singing busts, did they fit any of the more recognizable elements from the ride into the movie? They have to stick the hitch-hiking ghosts in there somewhere.

If it's half as successful as the 'Pirates' movie, I'm sure they'll tinker with the ride - and I'm pretty confident it will be. When I was in DL last September I attended a Haunted Mansion 40th Anniversary event, which was pretty cool. The theme of the event being The Bride, so there was a staged wedding with a 'reception dinner', but before that there was a Q&A session with some of the DL bigwigs. Point is, they know how badly they screwed up with the original HM and they let everyone know it. Countless jokes were flung around at the movie's expense, so with that being said, you know the people at Disney are going to do what they can to make the follow-up on par with POTC. Haunted Mansion is one of Disney's more popular, if not the most popular attraction. They can't keep dragging it through the mud, so after striking out once already, I can't just see that happening again.

Finally a genius director writing a movie on my fave Disney ride.:atp:

I'm hoping it's based more on the older ride at Disney World, instead of the refurbished one, as the original was a much, much darker storyline.

Interesting he wants to focus on the Hatbox ghost considering in the original story he really didn't have much of a role; even before he was cut out of the ride.

EDIT: Also, the Eddie Murphy movie used more of the Phantom Manor story, with some appearances by Haunted Mansion characters.

How did you come to be doing The Haunted Mansion?

Guillermo: I told them my own take on the screenplay and he said, “That’s not the way I see the movie.” And, I said to him, “Fine, then I’ll produce it. But, the thing I want to do is remake it.”

Have you seen the Eddie Murphy version?

Guillermo: Yes. I saw it with my daughters. I don’t like to talk about other people’s work, I just think there’s room for another one.

I am pumped about this movie... I hope maybe he changes his mind and directs as well.

I am pumed as well. I love the whole French Quarter at Disneyland and The Haunted Mansion deserves a dark and fun movie. One of my all time favorite experienses and yes, the ride is creepy and a little scary even for a Disney ride.

And thank goodness Tim Burton isn't involved. I love Burton's work but please let someone else closer to their prime make this movie. I have no problem with Del Toro behind this at all.

And another thing... If Del Toro is going to make a movie with Disney, why the heck does it have to be a reboot of a crappy movie that no-one asked for in the first place? Why is he not doing freaking Gargoyles?

This movie has nothing, NOTHING to do with the Eddie Murphy film.

Hopefully Disney waits until he finishes In The Mountains of Madness. I mean...a GDT produced Haunted Mansion will be badass but a GDT Directed HM even more badass.

Disney wants him to direct, it's just they have creative differences in what the story should be, and GDT said he'll produce just because he wants the movie remade.

It's been years since I've seen the Haunted Mansion but I remember it being atmospheric and kind of scary as well. I think Del Toro has the potential to make an amazing movie, like the first POTC.

Another Disney ride they can try to adapt would be Space Mountain. Their very own...STAR WARS! HAHA

There was a Tomorrowland movie in the works at one point which I think captured some of the classic iconography like Space Mountain.

Jungle Cruise they can do so long as it's a period piece. It would just come off like Anaconda or something if they did it present day.

that'd be a pretty cool movie i think

have it take place in the 1920's or something, and make it into a fun action movie like Raiders of the Lost Ark or The Mummy

And just like Anaconda, I'd picture the now family-friendly Ice Cube in the lead role.

I hope Del Toro does not direct. I'm sure he'd do good but he needs to focus his directing time on something else like At Mount of Madness or Frankenstein.

I'd rather have a good Haunted mansion than the 50th version of Frankenstein....personally. Not to say I wouldn't watch and enjoy it, just that I'd rather have Haunted Mansion. Not saying you, but some people act as if it is below him or something.

I'd much rather GdT do something he cares about like "At The mountains of Madness", "Haunted Mansion" and even "frankenstein" than something he publicly said he had no interest in years ago, Lord of the Rings type fantasy.

Damn, that'd be an awesome looking Hatbox Ghost. I love it.
