Reese Witherspoon may soon be spreading some fairy dust.

The actress is attached to star and produce Tink, a live-action take on the classic Peter Pan character.

Witherspoon will produce with Bruna Papandrea, her partner at the duo’s production banner Pacific Standard.

Victoria Strouse, who wrote the script for Pixar’s upcoming Finding Nemo sequel Finding Dory, is penning the script for the project, which does not have a director on board and is still in development.

The take on the project is being kept deep in Pixie Hollow, but insiders say it will play with the idea and the timeline of the well-known Peter Pan narrative. It is also being developed in the vein of Maleficent, Disney’s 2014 hit that starred Angelina Jolie as the evil witch from Sleeping Beauty. Like Maleficent, this Tinker Bell tale is conceived as “the story you don’t know” and will offer a new perspective on the character.

Unlike Maleficent or some other recent Disney movies, however, Tink is being developed to be made in a more modest mid-range budget.

Initially a minor and non-speaking character in J.M. Barrie’s Pan story, Tinker Bell (who also goes by Tink) has, since her appearance in Disney’s 1953 classic animated feature, become one of the symbols of Disney and is at the center of the lucrative Disney Fairies franchise.

The character was Pan’s companion who was portrayed as temperamental and as someone who became dangerously jealous due to her unrequited love for the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up.

Witherspoon, who has the comedy Hot Pursuit in theaters, just set up drama Pale Blue Dot, to which she is attached as star and producer, at Fox Searchlight.

She is repped by CAA, LBI Entertainment and Hansen Jacobson.

They should call it Tinker Bell, no reason to limit it to "Tink", only makes things more confusing.

Uh, isn't she a bit old to be Tinker Bell?

It's not the first mid-range budgeted Disney adaptation, i guess they're following suit to the success of Cinderella.

Geez, Disney is really going all out with these live adaptations of their characters.

Looking forward to Jiminy Cricket.

I think she'll be fine. But it's likely that using a younger actress might create a "creep" factor that they'll likely avoid with an "older" actress.

"Can I get 1 ticket to Tink?"

Theatre cashier: "You disgust me."

Wow. Just...why? Was there a screaming need for the world to see a live action version of Tinker Bell? she's already got lots of books and movies as a Disney cartoon character. What can they do with a live action version that can't be done with the animated one?

You're wondering why Disney would bring one of its most popular lines for little girls to the big screen in live aciton after the success of Cinderella and Malificent? haha. This was only a matter of time. Kids wanting to see a live action Tinkerbell is no different then wanting to see any other animated or comic book property.

The Disney fairies line has made hundreds of millions on their countless animated direct to dvd (they get theatrical overseas) films and toys alone. They already have those locked down. A live action flick is how they expand on what they have and bring new interest. While also helping halt the risk of the property declining. Lot of money to be made just on new movie merch and animated tie-ins.

....has it?

Given it's been more than 2 years since it's been announced and nothing has come of it, and the fact that there's a live action Peter Pan remake coming from them soon, I think it's fair to assume that this is DOA. It's for the best. Witherspoon needs to focus on more personal projects like Wild and Big Little Lies and less on the films that made people stop taking her seriously in the first place. Not to mention the unfortunate implications of a middle-aged woman who wears a panty-revealing short dress and plays with a couple of boys who don't grow old.
