Brazilian website Animations has posted a few new magazine scans featureing the first real image from Walt Disney Pictures’ animated film Rapunzel.

Directed by Byron Howard & Nathan Greno (the co-director and head of story on Bolt respectively), this new telling of the classic fairy tale, will transport audiences “to a stunning CG fantasy world complete with the iconic tower, an evil witch, a gallant hero and, of course, the mysterious girl with the long golden tresses. Expect adventure, heart, humor, and hair, lots of hair.”

Previous director Glen Keane developed a new look for this computer animated film, which is said to look and feel more like a traditional hand-drawn Disney Classic, but in 3D. Apparently the film uses a non-photorealistic rendering technique which will make the surface look like it is painted but still containing depth and dimensions. The movie’s visual style is being based on French Rococo artist Jean-Honore Fragonard’s painting “The Swing”. You can definitely see the look they’re going for in the image above.

There are a couple more very small concept drawings over on the Animations message board, but you really can’t see much of anything. A short clip of test footage was shown at Siggraph 2005, where is gained a lot of attention. Earlier concept images had been previously posted online from when the project was titled Rapunzel Unbraided. But the project has since been completely revamped. See more concept art here.

The voice cast is rumored to include David Schwimmer, Matthew Gary Gubler, Kristin Chenoweth, Dan Fogler, and Grey DeLisle. Rapunzel is scheduled to hit theaters in Christmas 2010.

Dinsy's CG studio hasn't impressed me much, but this looks cool.

Veddy in-ta-es-tink.

Love the story of Rapunzel and I'm really digging the direction Disney seems to be going with this one.

like its painted but in 3d?

ohhhh i am so going to watch this.

I'm surprised they didn't try to make a Rapunzel movie years ago.

i bet she will be a snappy girl that has an attitude and that the prince will be a bit dopey but heroic.

Wow, this looks really really beautiful. I'm excited

Here's that first test footage.

Going off the pics I'm definitely getting a Beauty and the Beast vibe style-wise.

And that's a good thing.

The first blonde princess? Disney is breaking barriers left and right.

Rapunzel is described as blonde in the original story, though. She has "golden" hair.

When are they going to have the first bald princess...that will shake things up. If they ever have a bald female she'll be like a villain or something.

I can say with fair certainty that he was being extremely sarcastic, as many of Disney's princesses are blonde.

However, many of Disney's movies are based off of Dutch and German fairytales, and the characters are clearly written as having light or golden hair. The stories where the girl is described as having black or dark hair have all been translated over into the movies as well, from what I've seen.

looks great. can't wait. if there's one thing disney does well it's fairytales.
