From Jim Hill Media: Are you ready to go back to "The Black Hole" ?
Now where this all gets interesting is that the team that the Mouse hired to run its graphic novel division, Kingdom Comics -- Ahmet Zappa, Harris Katleman and Christian Beranek -- was given some very specific marching orders. In that these three were told to go through the Studio's live-action library and then identify titles that would lend themselves to graphic novel adaptation.

And according to an interview that Oren Aviv, the president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Production, recently had with Disney Newsreel (i.e. the Studio's in-house magazine) ... Some of the films that Ahmet, Harris & Christian have recently been looking at are sure to intrigue / excite the fan community. To whit:

" We're looking now, for example, at what the graphic novel today would read and look like for 'The Black Hole' and what it would be for '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.' "
And when you take into consideration that Walt Disney Studios will actively be eyeballing all of these Kingdom Comics as possible fodder for future feature films ... Well, this late 1970s / early 1980s revival that we've been seeing lately at the Mouse House what with "Race to Witch Mountain" and "TR2N" could actually continue with a brand-new, big screen version of "The Black Hole."

Mind you, if comic book fans had their way ... Well, Disney wouldn't be releasing a new graphic novel version of this December 1979 release. But -- rather -- a collection of those "Black Hole" panels that comic legend Jack Kirby drew for that "Walt Disney's Treasury of Classic Tales" Sunday strip from September of 1979 through February of 1980. This is the one & only time that "King Kirby" ever did a movie adaptation. But that's a story for another time ...

“Race To Witch Mountain” star Dwayne Johnson will be space-bound in a new actioner being scripted by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, the team that penned the 2005 Martin Lawrence basketball comedy “Rebound.”

For some reason Variety thinks the untitled project might have something to do with Tomorrowland, the most futuristic district of Disneyland.

Disney is preparing another expedition into “The Black Hole.”

Joseph Kosinski and Sean Bailey, the director and producer of Disney’s new “Tron: Legacy,” and scribe Travis Beacham are teaming up for what is being labeled a reinvention of the 1979 sci-fi film, which at the time was the most expensive movie Disney had ever produced.

“Hole” marks one of the first projects to be put into development by new studio chief Rich Ross.

The original followed a group of space explorers aboard the USS Palomino who come across a lost ship, the USS Cygnus, hovering outside a black hole. Inside the Cygnus, the explorers meet a scientist, commanding an army of faceless robots, who explains his crew deserted him as he planned to go through the black hole. The explorers soon discover that the robots are the remnants of the former crew and that the scientist has no intention of letting them leave.

The $26 million movie, which featured a menacing red robot named Maximilian and two smaller, friendlier robots, was Disney’s first PG-rated production and helped put the company on the special effects map.

The details of the update are being kept secret, though the take does involve grounding the story in the science of a black hole, much more so than in the original. Maximilian also would return.

Brigham Taylor and Casey Wolfe are overseeing for Disney. Matt Smith and Justin Springer are shepherding for Idealogy.

“Hole” puts Bailey, who is making “Hole” via his Idealogy cq’d banner, back on track after seeing his “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” project shelved by Ross shortly after the November reorganization at Disney.

Kosinski, repped by WME and Anonymous, is a commercial director making his feature debut with “Tron,” which is set for release on Dec. 17, 2010. Disney is high on the movie, which could launch a franchise. It is unknown where “Hole” would fit in Kosinski’s timetable.

Beacham, also repped by WME and Anonymous, came onto the screenwriting scene with “Killing on Carnival Row” and worked on the “Clash of the Titans” remake.

This is one remake that doesn't bother me. I'm not a big fan of the original film but, a remake made with the right budget could be interesting. The only fond memories I have of the film released in 1979 are the robots and the theme. I didn't like any of the human characters.

the one thing about the movie that i liked the was the trippy horror like but beautiful ending.

I'd rather Hollywood remake terrible crap like Black Hole than anything with an iota of artistic merit.

I can't complain about this remake...1) We don't have nearly enough space movies. 2) Seeing Maxmillion with new special effects is too cool to pass up.

I've never actually seen the original, but I do love going back and watching older Disney movies, would you guys recomend it?

It's good, though it's unique in a way that I personally felt like the director and producers didn't know what the movie should cater to: adults or children. The movie is dark and slow (image Disney's very own version of 2001) but it has these cartoony robot characters (read: trying to cash-in the Star Wars crowd).

The ending is so dark and disturbing, it makes for a great short art house film.

I have been wanting a remake of this for a while. The old version is soo dated it needs to be revived.

I think that the movie will be in development, but won't get greenlit until Joseph Kosinski and Sean Bailey show off their first cut of "Tron Legacy" to Disney execs. Otherwise, they're still an unproven duo. Not to say that they won't do a good job with Tron.

SWEET!! a Space Mountain movie

awesome :woot:

hope it's as good as the Pirates of the Caribbean movies

Can I talk about “Black Hole”, is that still something you guys are looking forward to doing?
Bailey:
Yeah, absolutely. Travis Beacham is writing away, we’ve got an outline, like what he’s up to a lot.

I watched the original when they showed it at the Arclight a few weeks ago. I hadn’t seen it in a few years. It was cool. You’re still planning on having Maximilian in there?
Bailey:
Oh yeah. Ya. We like that movie, this is a pretty bold reimagination.

So this is not a sequel after they’ve already gone through the black hole. It’s a reimagining.
Bailey:
It is.

Man i seriously hope this movie has some awesome visuals.
I love it when science gets a proper visual representation in movies. That's one of the reasons why i love movies like 2001 and event horizon.

Vincent better be in the remake, and he better look exactly as he was in the original. Like R2-D2 and C3-PO, he is a classic that shouldn't be messed with. Maximillian can be "slightly" altered to give him an even more menacing look.

Ill be honest, when I was a kid this movie kinda creeped me out. At first I was really captured by the sci fi aspect, but as it continued on it took that horror type turn and scared the hell out of me. Especially the ending.

Why not? The original was interesting, but kind of cheesy and silly in some respects, so it's hardly a classic.

I remembered that it was a bit creppy when I watched movie for the first time, but I love it. So far from I've seen from Tron Legacy it looks good so I have faith in Kosinski for the reimagining.

Disney's 'Black Hole' Remake Lands Writer (Heat Vision Exclusive)
"Prometheus" co-writer Jon Spaihts has been tapped to write the reinvention, which has "Oblivion" filmmaker Joe Kosinski attached to direct.

Disney’s reinvention of its 1979 sci-fi movie The Black Hole is getting a new engine.

Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts has been hired to kickstart the project, which has Joe Kosinski -- the filmmaker behind the upcoming Tom Cruise sci-fi pic Oblivion -- attached to direct.

Justin Springer, who produced Kosinski’s feature debut Tron: Legacy, is producing Black Hole.

Black Hole was the most expensive movie Disney ever made when it was released in 1979 with a cast that included Maximilian Schell, Anthony Perkins, and Ernest Borgnine.

The original followed a group of space explorers aboard the USS Palomino who come across a lost ship, the USS Cygnus, hovering outside a black hole. Inside the Cygnus, the explorers meet a scientist commanding an army of faceless robots, who explains that his crew deserted him as he planned to go through the black hole. The explorers soon discover that the robots are the remnants of the former crew and that the scientist has no intention of letting them leave.

Disney put the remake into development in 2009. Travis Beacham was writing the script at the time, and Kosinski was working on the project while prepping the Tron reboot.

Among the signature pieces of the original movie were a threatening red robot named Maximillian as well as two kindlier robots named V.I.N.CENT and B.O.B.

It is unknown if those characters will return, but the new take, which restarts the project, has been described as being big idea -- philosophical and somewhat dark in tone.

Spaihts also wrote the screenplay for The Darkest Hour, an alien-invasion thriller produced by Timur Bekmambetov and is writing a script for Universal’s reboot of The Mummy.

He is repped by Paradigm, Circle of Confusion and Stone Meyer.

Cool. I want a totally amped up and uber-weaponized Maximillian.

It's about time. I will be at least able to buy a V.I.N.cent figure.

Here's a case where a remake can only improve on the original. Great effects, bad movie.
