ACTIVISION Blizzard Inc., the worlds largest videogame publisher, was sued for allegedly interfering with the release of a game that will rival DJ Hero, an extension of the companys Guitar Hero series.
Scratch DJ Game Llc. alleges Activision hampered the release of Scratch: The Ultimate DJ after acquiring a subcontractor that was developing the game, according to a copy of the complaint filed in California Superior Court in Los Angeles.
Activision, based in Santa Monica, California, plans to release DJ Hero, in which players pretend to mix records like a disc jockey, this year. Scratch DJ Game said its efforts to be first in stores have been jeopardized.
Scratch DJ Game, a joint venture of Genius Products Llc. And Numark Industries Llc., alleges Activision initially attempted to gain the rights to Scratch.
After that offer was rejected, the suit alleges Activision acquired the contractor California 7 Studios that was helping to develop Scratch DJ Games title.
Maryanne Lataif and Ashley Dyer, officials at Activision, didnt immediately return telephone messages seeking comment.
Activision and California 7 have allegedly tried to prevent the rival game from getting to market on time by withholding work product, code and the proprietary game controller, according to the complaint.
California 7 and its chief executive officer also are being sued by Scratch DJ Game, according to the complaint.
Lewis Peterson, the chief executive officer of Los Angeles-based California 7 Studios, also didnt immediately return a telephone message seeking comment. (Bloomberg)
