Do any of you write your own music?

    Yeah, like the title says.

Maybe there's another thread about this somewhere but I couldn't find it so I'll make this one.

Would be very fun and interesting to listen to your own stuff. Maybe there are some musical geniouses here?

I write some own stuff but I'm really only an amateur who does it for my own fun. I haven't studied musical theory or anything like that and I'm even not really that good at playing instruments. I come up with stuff in my head and write down the notes as accurately as I can in Guitar Pro(which often means it turns out like something entirely else :p haha).

These days I almost only write piano songs with some ensemble strings mixed into it. I don't really write complete songs but rather musical pieces that I come up with.

Anyway, as I said, it would be really cool to hear some of your stuff.

I'm taking the wheel on this thread momentarily. Post your music people! We musician hypsters are kind of a lost bunch. We post in our signatures, in our own threads, in the metal thread, blah, blah, blah. We need a central hub. Seriously, why isn't there a pages long thread for user-made music? I wanna hear what you guys are up to. I want a fire lit under my ass because of all the great work other anonymous people are doing on this forum. So what if you've posted it before. Post it again! So what if you're unsure how it is? Post it anyway! I'll listen to MIDI files. Just get those tunes out there. Let's make this that thread.

    Let's hear some music!

A musical piece can be worth more than a "complete" song. Let's hear it man!

Alot of my stuff starts out that way (also with guitar), but the ones that really stick I form into full-fleged pieces. Since I come from the film world (sound specifically), my newer stuff is more narrative. I'll post some stuff up as soon as it's all mixed. Hopefully people like it, haha.

Let's get some more people in on this thread! In this day and age with the ease of recording technology, there are so many great home-recordists/artists waiting to be found in so many eclectic styles.

I wrote a 21 minute piece of music in that mind frame. Far and away the longest thing I've ever written. I've written dozens of songs, and I really, really love some of them. But this long-ass monstrosity sits at the top. I'm as proud of that "thing" as any 3 minute song I've ever written. When you let go of this concept of a "song," the sky is the limit.

Wow I forgot I made this thread haha!

Would love to hear it but requires a log in and I don't want to use my facebook for those kind of sites :/ do you have it on youtube?

Great initiative!! I would love to hear what people have out there!

I'm no great musician at all but I just do it for fun :) There's nothing that says you can't as well.

I would love to share some of my (very amateurish!) stuff but I write them in Guitar Pro 5 and for some reason I can't record MIDI-sound in Audacity so that means you'd have to have Guitar Pro 5 to listen to the file. If you have, I'd be happy to send it and hear your thoughts!

Please post your own stuff as well if you want to :)

Would be awesome to hear it! :) And you're totally right about letting go of the "song" concept.

Ah. I didn't post the link to the public profile. Woops. Here it is: http://soundcloud.com/moviedoors

And here's the direct link to the 21 minute monstrosity: http://soundcloud.com/moviedoors/ix

    ------

GP5 should have an option for outputting a MIDI file. I wanna say it's under File > Export as "___"

Haha holy!! That's some brutal stuff, to say the least!! I really like The Oncoming Storm.

Am listening to IX now, really nice, atmospheric intro so far.

Please feel free to post your stuff if you want :)

A finally finished arranging and mixing this one:

    http://soundcloud.com/moviedoors/hidden

It's another stupid-heavy one. This one is very synth and sample heavy. There's all kinds of nonsense going on underneath all the crunchy guitars; analogue-style synths and sequences, drones, backwards guitar, additional percussion hits. I dropped the whole song into Audacity and slowed it down, bringing the pitch down to an A (yes, this song used to be even faster). I might post a track of what's happening underneath this maelstrom.

I actually finished this one about a month ago. Guess I forgot to actually post it up. It's an 8-string song. It's not a bludgeon-fest like most of my latest stuff. It's got more stomping, grooving riffs and some big dynamic shifts. The goal when I started writing it was: no harmony guitars. I actually find it hard to not write guitar parts that aren't doing different things. Like, really hard. I pulled it off in this one. The guitars are double tracked (of course) but they're playing the exact some parts. Any harmonic interplay in this one happens between the guitars and the bass, which is a sound I'm always striving for.

The samples at the beginning IE some of the synths and the monstrous shrieking, are from John Carpenter's The Thing, hence, the title. I buried some Thing screeching in other parts of the song too.

You people with MIDI tracks: post 'em. With you're permission, I'd love the opportunity to play with those tracks, produce them with better sounds, add-in some accompaniment. Give me the green light, and I'll do it. I love playing within the boundaries of another person's art.

Personally I think my beats suxx, but I make them when I'm stressed out, it gives me peace to sit down and make them. But I think they suck.

The Lion King beat could be cooler if you suttered it out more. Really cop those audio files up, reverse 'em, all that jazz.

The original beats have some cool ideas in them. I think you just need to add more dynamics, some variation to spice them up. Keep at it!

Thanks for the advice man. Yeah that Lion King beat was just something simple, I didn't even mastered it. As for my originals, of course when I listened to them I always think to myself I could add more. I try to be myself, Im not trying to make a Swizz Beats type of beat, or a Lex Luthor type of beat. I trying to create my own style and be as original as possible. My sampling isn't that great but I'm learning.

Here's one of the first beats I ever made. I sampled Zora's Domain from Zelda: Ocarina of Time and just added some drums and looped it into a track to rap on. Some people like it. It's off beat, it isn't quantized pr mastered. I actually made 2.0 where it's on beat, and added different drums and a little base.

I dropped the last track. I don't think it's finished and I'm not happy with the mix.

I extracted a part from it, and I think it works perfectly well as it's own track:

Here's a nasty one I did a few weeks ago. I actually miced up an amp for it, something I rarely do (love my Line 6 plug-ins) and the tones just got gross. The distortion is out of control in places, but I kinda love it that way. I like the looseness. It was assembled from about a 20 minute jam session. I made up most of the parts on the fly and assembled them later. The playing isn't always the tightest, but I like the life that adds to it.

I write stuff when I have to for my short films. I used to write songs on my guitar when I was younger, but haven't bothered doing so in years. Most of my songwriting comes via a MIDI Keyboard and Garageband.
