Well a friend and I were chatting up about the new hitman movie which sparked a debate. Where in he supported the ideology that a big name star like staham or vin diesel would bring in the bucks. To which I objected case in point most of the big franchsies began with unknowns in the lead. Topic when on and on…However he caught me off guard when he brought out animation as factor and why do most animated features have big stars on the poster endorsing the voices of the character.

Of course I couldn’t come up with a point at that time since I’m not that good in debates but I did defend it saying that its another genre all together and the core audience are kids. Now which kid’s going to go see a movie because its voiced by mike Meyer or Cameron diaz.

Just out of curiosity what’s your take?

Pirates 2 sucked
but all the teenage girls went to see it for Depp and bloom 100 times now its the highest grossing disney movie of all time

I doubt Night at the Museum would have been as big as it is with unknown actors.

As recent times have proven, there is much more at work than just the big name in terms of the success or failure of the film. As the private lives of public stars have become more and more popular, their image outside of films itself can greatly sway how well the film does. Look at Affleck and JLo, or Tom Cruise, or Brad & Angelina. I know plenty of people that no longer see their films because they don't like the people playing the parts; rediculous considering they have never met them, but such is the way of society now.
So ultimately, big names DO have a large impact on the money intake of a film... but now it can be a double edged sword- lending itself to even more money... or even less.
