We went to Christmas dinner at Canter's Deli tonight for fun, my mom, my sister, my brother, my silent bob and me.

I told my mother that I would help pay for my brother's dinner at the deli, assuming he would get an entree and a drink which would be about $15-$20

instead he got an entree and FOUR BEERS at $4.95 a piece, without asking EITHER of us if we were willing to pay for a nearly $40 tab for JUST him

And then, he conned her into buying him dessert too.

Now, doesn't that seem like he is taking advantage, especially when he said he didn't have the money to eat out, but then is taking his girlfriend to a $60 a piece concert on New Years?

You shouldn't be a little ticked. You should be downright pissed. If my brother pulled any of that ****, I would be all over him. I'd probably wait till my mom was out of view, but I would call him out for being a total *******.

Seems like a dick move, though to be fair, whenever someone picks up my tab, I always make sure to get the cheapest thing on the menu [and get *****ed out for it]

i'd be a little miffed too. it sounds like he took advantage of a situation, especially when he knew he wasn't going to be putting in any money for it.

What an inconsiderate lout Dew. I just have two things to recommend: A.) If you can do it, just do not invite him to dinner. B.) If it can't be avoided, then give the guy a spend limit on food and do not go over that budget at all. Whenever someone fronts my tab at a non-buffet style restaurant setting I always ask what my spend limit is.

My brother is a real shmuck. PLUS, he had an issue because he had to sit in the back seat of the car because my mom drove us in her PT Cruiser, which is small and cramped, and there were going to be THREE people in the back seat, so my silent bob, the biggest of us, was offered the passenger seat. It made sense to us, but he threw a fit about it... did I mention he will be THIRTY-ONE in February, so he is not a baby... he just acts like one

i was just about to ask how old he is. his behavior was very childlike. not only was he not paying for his dinner/drinks, he wasn't shelling out money for gas or driving. he just needs to stop whining and just go with the flow since he's not contributing much other than his presence

Should have bought him one of these for dinner:

You know Dew, I think we all have siblings like your brother who think the solar system of your family unit revolves around them. I have a younger sister, two years older than your brother, who acts like a Diva, though she really doesn't understand totally what being a Diva really is. Luckily she was fine yesterday during Christmas Dinner so she didn't stress me out when I've been stressed out more than enough this year combined. I'm this close to just cracking right now because of the hardships I've been facing mentally and in the real world like a warrior in battle. If I were in your place Dew, that brother of yours would be on the receiving end of a good lecture.

Of course he thinks he's the center of the solar system. His mother calls him "son". That's also why he thinks he's bright.

Oh, AND, he is living at home with my mom with his three kids, works only 2 to 4 hours a day, and refuses to even do the laundry or the dishes without throwing temper tantrums. He's the only boy in the family, so guess who got spoiled rotten?

Well, the sun is also a big, gaseous ball of hydrogen. :woot:

I know it's a tough time economically and I won't fault him for living with your parents, but even so he should be more responsible, especially since he has three kids. What kind of example is he showing them by acting like a spoiled brat who wants everything?

I'd blame the economy if he hadn't moved in three years ago and still hasn't gotten a full time job, or at least a job that gives him decent hours

Meh, I'm just venting, I guess

Dew, I totally understand you. I think you're well aware of the fact I vent in here as well. Sometimes your own flesh and blood relatives can drive you absolutely up a wall. I myself have been contemplating several times of just finding a job in another state and a place to stay just to start fresh with no baggage. There are just way too many ghosts that span decades haunting me, making me feel like absolute trash, in this little town I live in. I have to get away one of these days or it's just going to drive me insane.

I am the only one of the family who lives more than 20 minutes from each other. I moved out here to Studio City to write and they all stayed home and reproduced :( There are all these family photos with everyone but me in them

Your brother sounds like a real a$$ to me. I have one just like him. I have three older brothers. My family normally has our Christmas on Christmas Eve, but this year we are doing it on the 27th. The reason for this is both myself and my older two brothers had to work the 24th and 26th, so we just couldn't make it. My third brother was all pissed off about this and demanded that our parents change it back to Christmas Eve just for him. He is crying about it because he goes to his wifes sister's house on the 27th. Well he sees his wifes sister twice a month since she visits them in NC all the time. He only sees his parents once or twice a year. Yet he still feels we should bend for him. He wanted all of us to just call off work for him.

I think we all have someone in our family like this. Just let it go, nothing you do will change him. Thst is sad to say but it is tue.

Aw! Dew I really wish I could lend you some support because I understand what you're going through. Of course my alienation is more out of subconscious choice than anything else because I've always been a loner since birth. My mom used to come to pick me up from preschool when I was a kid and while all the other kids were playing with each other, I'd be off in a corner doing my own thing. I remember a little bit of that too. Some people are just outsiders in certain cases. I chalk it up to feeling awkward around more charismatic, self assured people. I hate not knowing what people think of me and whether or not they like being around me. In the real world I have great difficulty just opening up with strangers in a social setting because I want everybody to like me.

I'd be ticked.

I have a friend at work who offerred to buy me lunch one day. We went to Subway and I explained that I would get her back and buy her lunch one day.

When it was my turn to buy her lunch we went to this expensive Chinese place uptown. I ended up getting a 5 dollar sub and she ended up getting a 50 dollar dinner.

I know some of you mean well by offering to pony up for the cost of dinner, but really all these issues can be avoided in the future by setting a limit on how much you are willing to spend on food. Why put yourself in a financial hole because of trying to be nice? If the recipients don't like it, then they can stay home and starve I guess. Even on my birthday I asked my dad what our spend limit was. He said I didn't have any, but had I known our dinner would cost so much I would not have gotten some of the items I had gotten.

I guess the thing I see here is that if you're being treated to something don't be extravagant. You shouldn't have to set a limit on your purchase because your friends and family shouldn't try and go overboard with their orders. I wouldn't set a limit on spending because I expect my friends and co-workers to not go overboard. However, I suppose if it's a big enough deal to get upset over it might be a good idea to set a limit.

Maybe just saying something like, "Hey [person or persons] I'll buy you lunch, but try to keep it small I'm on a budget."

And then when they order four beers you can say, "Hey [person or persons] since you spent a little more than I can afford why don't you go take a flying ****?"

Yup,... Within your rights to be pissed.
