Top GOP Congressman warns of Socialists in Washington:

Posted by Katherine Bouma -- Birmingham News April 09, 2009 10:52 AM

Touring his Birmingham-area district today, U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus started the day in Trussville, where he treated a breakfast of municipal and county leaders to his thoughts on guns, socialists and the federal budget.

As for President Barack Obama, the Vestavia Hills Republican said he has "some hope."

"He's a better listener than George W. Bush," Bachus said. "He tries to get ideas from people."

But he said he is worried that he is being steered too far by the Congress: "Some of the men and women I work with in Congress are socialists."

Asked to clarify his comments after the breakfast speech at the Trussville Civic Center, Bachus said 17 members of the U.S. House are socialists.

Bachus did not support small city officials who asked if he would oppose all gun bans. Instead, he said, it may be necessary to support some assault weapon bans in order to keep all guns from being outlawed.

I think Bachus's statement actually has some viability, I think there are several Democrats in Congress whose views ARE socialist.

What are your thoughts?

*Quickly encrypts message* Uh, yeah.

I believe there are. And many of them don't realize they are.

Can you be a socialist and a transnationalist at the same time? Or is transnationalist the new way to say socialist?

I believe there are. And many of them don't realize they are.
1. There many types of socialists. France has socialists, they aren't sticking political prisoners in gulags.

2. What people do you believe are socialists?

3. What is wrong with socialism exactly? Why do you despise it so much?

4. What do you think about Bernie Sanders?

2. What people do you believe are socialists?

I think Barney Frank is a socialist. There are others. Obama's policies seem socialistic.

3. What is wrong with socialism exactly? Why do you despise it so much?

It goes against the principals of this country, quite frankly. Socialism uses equality to erode away freedom.

4. What do you think about Bernie Sanders?

I have respect for him. I have no problem with socialists who acknowledge their political viewpoint.

Yes, I know there are many different kinds of Socialists. Some Views are more extreme than others, but all of their goals are similar. More power to the State, less to the Individual.
2. What people do you believe are socialists?
Progressives, Statists, Communists, Fascists. They are Socialists. Again, More power to the State, less to the Individual. Belief in Group Rights, not Individual Rights. People that give power to other over the self.
3. What is wrong with socialism exactly? Why do you despise it so much?
Socialism does not follow the Belief in the Individual. That State's authority is derived FROM the Individual. For the State to have power, they must steal if from the Individual.
4. What do you think about Bernie Sanders?
Fascist.

What's the problem with socialism?

There are ways to be socialist without ''taking away the individual's freedom''

It's more of a ... look out for each other ideal.

It's forcing people to look out for each other. If I am a successful, hardworking person, I shouldn't be forced to take care of the drunk next door. That drunk next door doesn't have much of a reason to improve himself because he is being supported by his successful neighbor next door.

From my viewpoint the right wing view socialism as a bad thing primarily on the Soviet Union model. France isn't like that version. Like all political concepts there are good and bad ones, like Democracy. Iraq just became a Democracy and it operates very differently then the American version.

I agree.

How?

I think Mr. Bachus is taking up Ms. Bachmann's 'real american investigation'.

I don't want a Socialist country, no matter how good it runs. I have fundamental disagreements with such an ideology.

Why do you think he's a socialist?

Because he supports the government's takeover of public companies.

The very idea of taking from the rich to support the poor infringes on the freedoms of the rich.

I think Mr. Bachus is taking up Ms. Bachmann's 'real american investigation'.

I disagree entirely.

For one, I personally know Spencer Bachus. He is one of the good Republicans in Washington.

Two, he isn't using "socialist" as an insult - but as a description of political ideology.

Fair enough.

Okay.

Because he supports the government's takeover of public companies.

They're doing it because the companies revealed how incompetent they were. They basically put a bullet through America's economy last year due to their actions. No industry shouldn't have good regulation.

The very idea of taking from the rich to support the poor infringes on the freedoms of the rich.
The rich seemed to love taking the poor's money until they noticed strings were attached. The rich will still have more freedoms then the poor if they share their money. I don't expect them to suddenly be homeless after the government raids their bank accounts.

Jeeeeeeez

Youre more American then Apple Pie

I don't care what the motive is, it's wrong. I don't think the American taxpayer should be bailing out these companies. When companies become "too big to fail", we are all hurt.

The rich seemed to love taking the poor's money until they noticed strings were attached. Not that the poor should suffer for the rich's actions.

Yeah, Stormy farts American Pie....

I believe there are socialists in Washington. But, since they were elected into office, that means that there is segment of our society who want the country to be socialist.

Also I believe there are more alarmists in Washington. I don't even bat an eye when I hear it being used. It really has become a catch-all for any Democrat, just like labeling everything/body as "far left".

I don't know, honestly I think ALOT of voters, truly do not understand or even know the ideology held by the people they vote into office. I'm not saying they are stupid voters, but I do believe many are ignorant voters. And even if they held the name "Socialist", I'm not sure many voters know or understand exactly what that means.

Most campaigns are more about, "what the people want to hear" more than "what I'm actually going to do once I'm in office."

I agree with stormie.

frankly...I donate to MUCH more efficient institutions then the government.
Its called charities...

The Government is a TERRIBLE in any way, because they are not forced to be efficient like companies and charities. That being said...I dont want the government to take my money to give to others...yes I am stingy that way.

At least you guys have your priorities straight

#1- SOCIALISTS ARE PUREEEEEE EVILLLLLL

and will steal your pies!

No.

#1 Athiests are pure evil.

#2 Mexicans are pure evil.

Then its socialists, communists and hippies.
