The controversy over black Asgardians and muslim Batman has me wondering if there are racist fanboys and geeks out there.

I may have a utopian view of geeks but I never it was in our nature to be racist.

Do you guys know of any racist fanboys or geeks?

There is no controversy, it's from an attention ****ing group who have an undisclosed number of members and members of the press are citing them as being a "large right wing organization". Then making it out like ALL conservatives or right wingers are outraged by this.

They're just trying to manufacture controversy to get free publicity.

HOWEVER, try to suggest an ethnicity other than caucasian for the big DC Trinity (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman) and the fanboy purists will have a ****fit

Where did muslim Batman come from ?

I'm sure there are racist fanboys and geeks out there. Look at how many death threats Marvel got when they were making a black Captain America.

Are you talking about the book involving Isiah Bradley? I thought they were getting death threats because of the ***y artwork,

But did those death threats come from fanboys or white hate groups.
The media wasn't real clear on that one.

The Islamaphobia is getting real ridiculous lately. It's just a f****** comic book people.

Yeah, it was the Issiah Bradley book. Marvel got a bunch of death threats because some morons thought they were turning Cap into a black guy.

The Muslim Batman one is about the new French superhero who is a Muslim immigrant fighting crime in Paris.

Again the "faux rage" is from the same group who were outraged that they were going to make a Norse god black. It's just some attention ****ing people, not real comic book geeks

A guest-comic on Shortpacked recently addressed the Batman thing.

Note: I had to edit out the 3-letter F-word.

I'll tell you what fanboy is not racist. Nicholas Cage. He ****s everything regardless of color.

Changing an established character's race is a little ridiculous (as far as Black Captain America/Spider-Man/Superman etc. The complaints about the guy in the Thor movie are silly.) Making a new character of a different race that picks up the mantle isn't.

Years ago, when Batman Begins was talked about before it was BB, a few Hypesters threw around the idea of Denzel Washington playing Batman. Me - and other's - protested the posts, and were immediately called racist.

I went the extra mile and said - paraphrased - "it's not racism, it's the same fact if Jude Law was in talks for Spawn, I would take issue." Even then, I was called racist.

The characters have been set in stone for 60, 40, and as little as 20 years ago. There is NO NEED to change any origin/story/ethnicity/background of any hero/villain.

Now. . I brought to a bit of a conundrum: "what about Nick Fury in the Ultimate Universe," one may ask. My retort is simply. . that is a different universe, differernt story, different timeline. But when it come to the tentpoles and the ACTUAL history of these heroes/villains.

I really think it's the big ones I care about. I would not bat-an-eye if Lucius Fox were Asian, or if Kingpin were African-American. . . wait. :O

I agree with all of this.

Yeah, I want the more important characters to look as close as they reasonably can to their comic book counterparts. The supporting characters can be changed, though. I loved Kerry Washington as Alicia in the Fantastic Four movie.

My thing about this is does being white saying really represent Bruce Wayne? Does he have to be a rich white business man, say the way that it absolutely necessary to have characters like Black Panther and Storm be proud Africans who both relish in their culture and heritage? Because Bruce's main traits are outside of his race? What makes it necessary for his skin to be white? I guess you could say Storm and Panther's skin colors are secondary to their most common other traits as well, but it seems WRONG to me to make them anything other than what they are, but Bruce doesn't really seem to need to be white.

What makes it so that Bruce Wayne has to be that way? I mean I'm not gonna lie if after Dark Knight Rises, they cast say Denzel Washington as Bruce Wayne, I'd probably scratch my head, but isn't one able to have the fundamental basics of what makes Bruce Wayne tick as a member of any other race?

On the opposite end of the spectrum, does John Stewart or Blade have to be a black man? Granted, I know minimumal knowledge on John and Blade, just the basic essentials, but can't they both be represented for what they are as say? Asian or muslim?

^So we agree that white men are expendable?

How would we even know if they were Muslim? The religious beliefs of most characters don't even come up 90% of the time. That's kind of an arbitrary thing to put out there unless we're talking about a character who's deeply religious with another religion, like Nightcrawler.

The catch-22 is that most black characters were created BECAUSE there were none, so saying why can't a white actor play them kind of negates the whole thing and makes it moot. They were explicably created by the creators to showcase their blackness. Now for some of the newer characters that have been created, it don't really matter as much as it did back then.

I wouldn't say fanboys are inherently racist. I think that's a problem with the internet where people think that fanboys are just one collective mind spread out over thousands of people. There are racists in the world. Some of them like comics. Sometimes, due to the anonymous nature of the internet, these racists have a platform for espousing their crap. That does not mean they represent all fanboys.

Idris will make a fine Heimdell. A Muslim Batman is fasinating.

Wanting characters to be represented on screen the way they were in the comics is not racist. I really don't care about minor characters but I care about main characters.

I understand that there are far more white characters than any other ethnicity and that is changing slowly. However, far too many people who don't care about a white character being changed would throw a fit if another character was changed to white. I just don't like that double standard.

I think the double standard has to do with black characters being under-represented and white characters being over-represented. That's why no one blinks when minor white characters are made another race and changing black characters is far more noticable.

It is happening slowly...

That isn't a reason to up and change a character from the way they have been portrayed for half a century.

Yes, but there's nothing that makes Bruce Wayne as a character feel like has to be any certain race. Same for Superman. I get preserving their legacy I do.

But their values and character can be told with an actor of any skin.

So you are just basically saying why not?
