I listen seventies and eighties... rock'n'roll, classic and modern. :word:

I don't like "modern" MTV music. I'm a sucker for melody. Modern genres have barely any notes in them.

I like some modern music. I really like Heavy Metal but have been disappointed in the metal scene this past decade.

Also, two spots below Community is the Books and Music section. Might want to have a mod move this over there.

Yeah, I got it wrong in terms of boards.

Do you like Black Sabbath's new effort?

Haven't listened to it yet. For awhile now I've mainly been listening to older music. 90's and before.

Actually all music is based on the concept of melodies and chords so it's not that they don't have them it's just for a very long time producers made the music louder and louder which has the effect of making it very harsh and in your face so to speak as opposed to the lighter and softer tones of the past.

As a DJ I listen to everything EXCEPT COUNTRY! I really dislike country, but I grew up on classic rock from the 70's/80's then progressed to more modern pop and classic hip hop, then made my way into punk for a long time and after that I discovered electronic music and fell in love. I love the way good producers can take the one or two good things from a crappy song and make it something cool.

I like indie rock/pop and some dance music (like trance) so far as modern stuff goes. No hip hop or r & b, usually.

The majority of music I listen to is electronic (EBM, industrial, synthpop, etc) from the 80s onward. I don't really care for modern music unless it comes from a band I already listen to. Though I occasionally pick up more recent groups from listening to internet radio, mainly Live365.

I'll be honest. I'll listen to just about any genre you play around me.

I don't usually listen to Country, but I once worked with a guy who played it everyday, and I grew to appreciate it. Even liked a couple of Hank Williams III's songs (though I understand he sorta crosses genres).

I have my favorite types of music, but I don't have it in me to totally dismiss any other music.

No. Not at all.

Modern music is a low point.

Don't like modern music.
Listen too: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, BingCrosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Rosemary Clooney, Doris Day, Louie Armstrong.
Plus 60's stuff like: The Royal Guardsmen, The Ventures, The Turtles, the Byrds and Nancy Sinatra.

I'll listen to a little modern music depending on who it is; but modern rap and R&B, no way.

Modern music isn't really my thing, I do occasionally listen to really awful pop but I'm a country fan mostly.

Unfortunatley, sometimes they go too far with repetitive drum beats and synthetic sounds, without paying attention to melodies or harmonies. Listen Gaga or Beyonce for instance.

I mostly listen to old music, but I do like some modern music. Classic rock is the closest to the heart but Im open to other genres like rap and rnb. One of the songs Ive been listening to the most lately is Ni**as in Paris by Jay-Z and Kanye West.

I listen to a lot of smooth jazz, 80's-90's R&B (New Jack Swing type stuff), classic rock, and mainly house and electronica. I've tried to get into some more mode modern music, but I've found that I can only listen to it in moderations. I am also not that big on country, which sucks because in my part of world, that and Christian music is all you hear on the radio.

Most of the top 40 today is equivalent to the crap I took probably about 45 minutes ago.

Music is, was, and always will be great. With today's vast methods of finding music there's no reason why anyone shouldn't find great, modern artists unless they're lazy and/or old people who are pissed because they aren't young anymore. Money isn't even an issue either. Spotify is free, and I'm loving all the artists that I come across today.

Henry Rollins is right: There are some great music out there but you'll have to dig it up for yourself. I agree with him. It's just too cynical to say that it ALL sucks. But they have been saying for the past 50 years. You like Nirvana or Tupuc? Guess what? People in their 30's and 40's provably thought Nirvana sucked and Oingo Boingo was the SHEET.

For example, I'm not a fan of pop music, but I think Katie Perry blows 90's Brittney out of the water.

Some new music is fine but I prefer mostly the 80's and back.

And Cake.

Absolutely this.
When I hear people say things like:

No. Not at all.
Modern music is a low point.
Today's music is largely terrible.

...what I'm actually hearing is - "I'm too lazy to actually go and find new music".

"Modern music" is vastly broader than what is on the charts people, and there was just as much crap 40 years ago, time has just filtered out the good stuff.

Rodrigo y Gabriela, John Butler Trio, Scale the Summit, Laura Mvula, Opeth, Apocalyptica, Russian Circles, Puscifer, Machine Head, Tool, The Frames, A Perfect Circle, Seasick Steve, Reignwolf. Just a tiny sample of great musicians/bands that have come up in the past 5, 10, 15, 20 years.

Music has been complete garbage since the start of the new millennium. There's been a few bright spots here and there but overall I don't like it. Thank god for satellite radio.
