I've been wondering about this topic about games&gamers for a very long time But never thought about making a thread about it until now,I've been playing games since I was like 3 or 4 and started with Snes&Sega while playing&owning most consoles since then..But I never considered myself a"hardcore"player cause even though I played them for a long time/being addicted and of course wanted to pass the game..I just played them casually since it was not about points&all the unlocks But rather just enjoying them for what they were/are!!!

Now a days gamers seem more picky&aggressive than years ago,Games info were very limited since the only way we'd know about upcoming games was by Demos/Magazine ads&TV commercials..But now even companies provide TONS of info with full-details&spoilers months in advance and yet some gamers want more&more and now&now!!!

I understand wanting to pass a game and wanting to be rewarded for beating challenges But some are obsessed with 100% every game for things like achievements&trophies,When new games are released some people pick them apart for every little thing and while I can understand about length..I feel some worry about graphics/story&features instead of important things(gameplay)and compare games to others WAY too much!!

Online is a whole new beast that can become hostile for no real reason,Many play Ranked as IF they were going for actual money/importance to be #1 in the world &*****,I mostly play Player matches and there's plenty of nut cases there,One time in a wrestling game's 3-way player match I won the match by rolling up&pinning someone who was about to win and he sent me an angry voice message saying that he hopes I get cancer&die and that my wife leaves me(and his gamertag was LoveGuru)and many times in GTA IV where I ran over or shoot someone and they tell me I'm a stupid mexican beaner and that IF they were in Texas they'd come to my place and kick my ass and even stab me!!!!

I also don't get why racism&homophobic remarks are an open expression like nothing!,I do something you don't like and that's fine But no need to call me mexican/wet bag/beaner just cause I'm hispanic and why call me gay IF you don't know me?and even IF I was..Why does that matter?

And what's with the Noob BS?You were new to consoles&games at one time and not everybody gets a new game on release day,You have better skills But it's just a video game you *****e!!

I just feel there's a HUGE difference in maturity in gaming generations from when I grew up in the 90's to the way some people are now,I fear the new generation for WiiU/Xbox 3&PS4!!

Its just the anonymity of the internet man. Thats why you have all the hate speech. People say it because they can get away with it. Its just something ya deal with.

As for taking games too seriously? I personally dont. I mean at the end of the day its just a game that means NOTHING. However, with that said, i dont like to lose, at anything. I get upset if I'm playing Gears or BF3 and i dont win. Granted that mood lasts for all of 5 minutes, but still, i hate losing. I can also trash talk with the best of em, but i never resort to it unless provoked and to be honest, i dont see it happen that often. I rarely get hate messages. Altho the other day i quit out of a Gears match because i was the last one down and the team was just gonna wait for me to get back up then shotgun me, so instead of waiting i just quit out and a dude sent me a message saying "noob".

The beauty of video games is you can enjoy them in many different ways. Some people aren't satisfied until they "complete" a game. Others are only concerned with conquering others in the online arena. And others still, like me, enjoy discussing and debating about games or "picking them apart" as you say, because gaming is my favorite hobby and I've been doing it for a long time and I care about the industry.

Different strokes and all that.

It seems like your post kind of degenerated into a rant about people calling you names. Which is a ****** thing of them to do, but guess what. People are jerks. Guess what else. Give jerks the ability to hide behind anonymity and they're going to be HUGE jerks. It's not excusable, but it's just the way of things. It's not recent, and it's not even unique to gaming.

Great post.

One good thing about jerks online is there is usually a way to get back at them. Take Gears of War for example. If someone is talking smack to you, try and down said person, rip his arm off and beat the hell out of him with his own arm. Its great. It what you want to do in real life but can't.

In regards to online...

I am never not in a party chat with friends. Even if we're playing something on the PS3 we're talking in party chat on the 360. So.. No one bothers me there.

I've become a bit more picky with my games.. I think that's fair. If I'm paying 60 bucks for something I want it to last me more than 5-8 hours. If it's not going to give me that... Then it can wait until it's half the price..

I didn't mean for it to come off as a rant,I was simply asking questions&just giving examples in my experience But I don't care about what people think in their OPINION about me,I really am just curious how you all are as gamers and do not mean to debate in a heated conversation or anything!!!

Games/Gamers&The industry has changes so much and so I want to debate that in a mature way as possible!

That made me LOL.

Iv done the same thing with my friends.

I guess it depends on the person, I know when I was a kid I would get frustrated and throw my NES controller whenever I died playing Super Mario Bros. 3.

I'm mostly a 100% type of gamer, but only if that 100% doesn't include online. All the great 3D platformers of the N64 generation, I'd play until I got everything possible, just finishing the game wasn't enough for me. Right now I'm playing Rayman Origins, I've beat them main game, but still working on getting all the achievements. That game won't be leaving my X-Box until that's done, I'm actually really close, only have 15 stages left to complete. However, Gears of War, I was content with finishing the core game and every so often going in and playing online for a little bit. Getting 100% on that would take way too long and I (and my girlfried especially) don't have the patience or time for that.

It honestly just aggravates me that Sony doesn't have a similar online chat system. They're going to h ave one on the Vita for cryin' out loud.

I would often do that too.. More so for the Mega Man games. I legit broke an SNES controller over Mortal Kombat II... Stupid Kintaro.

I play online and very rarely see abuse. As a matter of fact on a Team Fortress 2 server people will occasional give out free items. It's wonderul. Likewise with Lord Of The Rings Online, wonderful community full of helpful people. I think it's probably the platform you are playing on and the games you are playing. Specifically the Xbox360 and militery shooters aimed at bro dudes. Aside from Call Of Duty not being very good, the community around it is also not wonderful in nature. It's also had a ripple effect of trying to make all games try to appeal to bro dudes for the moneyz. It's not good, not good at all. In fact it's very bad.

Also in regards to online and the jerks there, it is different because it's anonymous, before this generation (or late last gen) multiplayer was with friends at someone's house. You're not going to be as awful to a friend as a stranger half a world away, I mean your friend could hit you in the balls very easily. Not worth the risk.

Online dbags (when I do hear them) are just hilarious. Half of them can't even speak English (and I'm talking about Americans here) and it's just SO easy to make them rage quit just by making them look (or sound) like a total dumbass.

I don't have to get angry. I stay calm and win. :p Heck I dont even use the voice chat. lol

Actually you make a good point. Online existed long before consoles. Generally typing is more populour than speaking. This basically lead to silent lines of text that usually amounted to a word or two. With the rise of consoles online. A 12-16 year old child is more likely to get an Xbox360 than a £500 pc. It's cheaper, more accessible. The games are generally simplyer in nature as well. With that in mind, the rise of the console online also meant more younger children online typically playing Halo and Call Of Duty with voices have yet to break and a very simple understanding of the world. I would imagine that would be extreamly annoying.

I'm just going to go ahead and say that Spock blames everything on consoles. When the world up an explodes.. Somewhere Spock will say "It's from all those Red Ring 360's."

I also think that many of those kids don't have many friends and use 360 games as a substitute for friend's. I was playing Horde Mode on Gears 3 a few weeks ago and this little kid just wouldn't shut up. Just babbling on and on and on, it was incredibly annoying, halfway through I got a friend request from him. It was the first time I ever played with this kid and I didn't even have a mic plugged in, so I didn't say one word to him, I'm not your friend.

Kid's don't go outside anymore.

I blame Apple.

I don't know about blaming apple But I agree technology has consumed the youth,When I was a kid we'd be on bikes/building club houses/going to the lake/playing sports/camping&staying late outside in summer..Now most kids I see are on their phones texting/hurting themselfs by trying to do skate stunts and at stores buying stuff for games/phones/computers&etc!!!

As a 90's kid, I spent plenty of time playing games instead of going outside.

Yea, he's not alone in that mindset. Most elitist's have the same form of thinking. The problems that are present are caused by something they aren't a part of.

It's for the best. Going outside is not great.

I don't take games too seriously. Some of my friends do though.

We were all playing Skyrim at the same time and I casually mentioned that friend A had a very high level. Suddenly friend B goes quiet and starts spluttering. Exit friend B.

When Friend B logs on next time we find out he has MORE THAN DOUBLED friend A's level, just because he couldn't take it as a personal affront that someone was exceeding him. Madness I tell you.

Maybe. I usually want to complete the game 100%. I think this started with Playstation (FFVII weapons, Spyro 2's orbs etc). I don't remember being that obsessed when playing NES or SNES. Now that i have Xbox 360 it's gotten worse because of achievements.

I sometimes rage when playing, BUT i've never personally attacked anyone online, talked trash, sent stupid messages or anything like that. I also find console wars, pc vs. console war and fanboy wars like BF vs. COD really stupid and unnecessary. I enjoy gaming in general, and see no reason to hate people who like other games or systems.

I've been lucky and haven't played with too many aggressive people. I've had some hate messages, but i've just blocked them and moved on.

I found it funny, right after this thread opened, i got on some Gears 3 and after one match where my team dominated, this little kid, prob 16 or 17 was just wailing away on his mic talking junk. Saying how he was a low level but better than my whole team(stats show otherwise). Generally i like a bit of trash talking, but this dude just sucked at it. He did send me a message saying how i was a nerd because i had a high gamer score, but like the rest of his trash talk, it just wasn't good. Myself and a buddy I was playing with had a good laugh about it.
